J’avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, Et je n’aurais pas arrêté mes regards sur une vierge.

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

“I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

Quelle part Dieu m’eût-il réservée d’en haut? Quel héritage le Tout-Puissant m’eût-il envoyé des cieux?

Porque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente de las alturas?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

La ruine n’est-elle pas pour le méchant, Et le malheur pour ceux qui commettent l’iniquité?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Dieu n’a-t-il pas connu mes voies? N’a-t-il pas compté tous mes pas?

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Si j’ai marché dans le mensonge, Si mon pied a couru vers la fraude,

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

“If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit

Que Dieu me pèse dans des balances justes, Et il reconnaîtra mon intégrité!

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

Si mon pas s’est détourné du droit chemin, Si mon cœur a suivi mes yeux, Si quelque souillure s’est attachée à mes mains,

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fué tras mis ojos, y si algo se apegó á mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

Que je sème et qu’un autre moissonne, Et que mes rejetons soient déracinés!

Siembre yo, y otro coma, y mis verduras sean arrancadas.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

Si mon cœur a été séduit par une femme, Si j’ai fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain,

Si fué mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando á la puerta de mi prójimo:

If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

“If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

Que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, Et que d’autres la déshonorent!

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Car c’est un crime, Un forfait que punissent les juges;

Porque es maldad é iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces.

For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

C’est un feu qui dévore jusqu’à la ruine, Et qui aurait détruit toute ma richesse.

Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta el sepulcro, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

Si j’ai méprisé le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante Lorsqu’ils étaient en contestation avec moi,

Si hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, cuando ellos pleitearan conmigo,

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,

Qu’ai-je à faire, quand Dieu se lève? Qu’ai-je à répondre, quand il châtie?

¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Celui qui m’a créé dans le ventre de ma mère ne l’a-t-il pas créé? Le même Dieu ne nous a-t-il pas formés dans le sein maternel?

El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Si j’ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu’ils demandaient, Si j’ai fait languir les yeux de la veuve,

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

Si j’ai mangé seul mon pain, Sans que l’orphelin en ait eu sa part,

Y si comí mi bocado solo, y no comió de él el huérfano;

Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

Moi qui l’ai dès ma jeunesse élevé comme un père, Moi qui dès ma naissance ai soutenu la veuve;

(Porque desde mi mocedad creció conmigo como con padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fuí guía de la viuda;)

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

Si j’ai vu le malheureux manquer de vêtements, L’indigent n’avoir point de couverture,

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

Sans que ses reins m’aient béni, Sans qu’il ait été réchauffé par la toison de mes agneaux;

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

Si j’ai levé la main contre l’orphelin, Parce que je me sentais un appui dans les juges;

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

Que mon épaule se détache de sa jointure, Que mon bras tombe et qu’il se brise!

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Car les châtiments de Dieu m’épouvantent, Et je ne puis rien devant sa majesté.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

Si j’ai mis dans l’or ma confiance, Si j’ai dit à l’or: Tu es mon espoir;

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

“If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’

Si je me suis réjoui de la grandeur de mes biens, De la quantité des richesses que j’avais acquises;

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

Si j’ai regardé le soleil quand il brillait, La lune quand elle s’avançait majestueuse,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

Et si mon cœur s’est laissé séduire en secret, Si ma main s’est portée sur ma bouche;

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

C’est encore un crime que doivent punir les juges, Et j’aurais renié le Dieu d’en haut!

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

Si j’ai été joyeux du malheur de mon ennemi, Si j’ai sauté d’allégresse quand les revers l’ont atteint,

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

Moi qui n’ai pas permis à ma langue de pécher, De demander sa mort avec imprécation;

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

Si les gens de ma tente ne disaient pas: Où est celui qui n’a pas été rassasié de sa viande?

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

Si l’étranger passait la nuit dehors, Si je n’ouvrais pas ma porte au voyageur;

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

Si, comme les hommes, j’ai caché mes transgressions, Et renfermé mes iniquités dans mon sein,

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

Parce que j’avais peur de la multitude, Parce que je craignais le mépris des familles, Me tenant à l’écart et n’osant franchir ma porte…

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

Oh! Qui me fera trouver quelqu’un qui m’écoute? Voilà ma défense toute signée: Que le Tout-Puissant me réponde! Qui me donnera la plainte écrite par mon adversaire?

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Je porterai son écrit sur mon épaule, Je l’attacherai sur mon front comme une couronne;

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

Je lui rendrai compte de tous mes pas, Je m’approcherai de lui comme un prince.

Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Si ma terre crie contre moi, Et que ses sillons versent des larmes;

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;

Si j’en ai mangé le produit sans l’avoir payée, Et que j’aie attristé l’âme de ses anciens maîtres;

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

Qu’il y croisse des épines au lieu de froment, Et de l’ivraie au lieu d’orge! Fin des paroles de Job.

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
