Ich habe einen Bund gemacht mit meinen Augen, daß ich nicht achtete auf eine Jungfrau.

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Was gäbe mir Gott sonst als Teil von oben und was für ein Erbe der Allmächtige in der Höhe?

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

Wird nicht der Ungerechte Unglück haben und ein Übeltäter verstoßen werden?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Sieht er nicht meine Wege und zählt alle meine Gänge?

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Habe ich gewandelt in Eitelkeit, oder hat mein Fuß geeilt zum Betrug?

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

So wäge man mich auf der rechten Waage, so wird Gott erfahren meine Unschuld.

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

Ist mein Gang gewichen aus dem Wege und mein Herz meinen Augen nachgefolgt und klebt ein Flecken an meinen Händen,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

so müsse ich säen, und ein andrer esse es; und mein Geschlecht müsse ausgewurzelt werden.

Siembre yo, y otro coma, y mis verduras sean arrancadas.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

Hat sich mein Herz lassen reizen zum Weibe und habe ich an meines Nächsten Tür gelauert,

Si fué mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando á la puerta de mi prójimo:

If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

so müsse mein Weib von einem andern geschändet werden, und andere müssen bei ihr liegen;

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

denn das ist ein Frevel und eine Missetat für die Richter.

Denn das wäre ein Feuer, das bis in den Abgrund verzehrte und all mein Einkommen auswurzelte.

Hab ich verachtet das Recht meines Knechtes oder meiner Magd, wenn sie eine Sache wider mich hatten?

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

Was wollte ich tun, wenn Gott sich aufmachte, und was würde ich antworten, wenn er heimsuchte?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Hat ihn nicht auch der gemacht, der mich in Mutterleibe machte, und hat ihn im Schoße ebensowohl bereitet?

Habe ich den Dürftigen ihr Begehren versagt und die Augen der Witwe lassen verschmachten?

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

Hab ich meinen Bissen allein gegessen, und hat nicht der Waise auch davon gegessen?

Denn ich habe mich von Jugend auf gehalten wie ein Vater, und von meiner Mutter Leib an habe ich gerne getröstet.

Hab ich jemand sehen umkommen, daß er kein Kleid hatte, und den Armen ohne Decke gehen lassen?

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

Haben mich nicht gesegnet seine Lenden, da er von den Fellen meiner Lämmer erwärmt ward?

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

Hab ich meine Hand an den Waisen gelegt, weil ich sah, daß ich im Tor Helfer hatte?

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

So falle meine Schulter von der Achsel, und mein Arm breche von der Röhre.

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Denn ich fürchte Gottes Strafe über mich und könnte seine Last nicht ertragen.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

Hab ich das Gold zu meiner Zuversicht gemacht und zu dem Goldklumpen gesagt: “Mein Trost”?

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Hab ich mich gefreut, daß ich großes Gut hatte und meine Hand allerlei erworben hatte?

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

Hab ich das Licht angesehen, wenn es hell leuchtete, und den Mond, wenn er voll ging,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

daß ich mein Herz heimlich beredet hätte, ihnen Küsse zuzuwerfen mit meiner Hand?

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

was auch eine Missetat ist vor den Richtern; denn damit hätte ich verleugnet Gott in der Höhe.

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

Hab ich mich gefreut, wenn's meinem Feind übel ging, und habe mich überhoben, darum daß ihn Unglück betreten hatte?

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

Denn ich ließ meinen Mund nicht sündigen, daß ich verwünschte mit einem Fluch seine Seele.

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

Haben nicht die Männer in meiner Hütte müssen sagen: “Wo ist einer, der von seinem Fleisch nicht wäre gesättigt worden?”

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

Draußen mußte der Gast nicht bleiben, sondern meine Tür tat ich dem Wanderer auf.

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

Hab ich meine Übertretungen nach Menschenweise zugedeckt, daß ich heimlich meine Missetat verbarg?

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

Habe ich mir grauen lassen vor der großen Menge, und hat die Verachtung der Freundschaften mich abgeschreckt, daß ich stille blieb und nicht zur Tür ausging?

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

O hätte ich einen, der mich anhört! Siehe, meine Unterschrift, der Allmächtige antworte mir!, und siehe die Schrift, die mein Verkläger geschrieben!

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Wahrlich, dann wollte ich sie auf meine Achsel nehmen und mir wie eine Krone umbinden;

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

ich wollte alle meine Schritte ihm ansagen und wie ein Fürst zu ihm nahen.

Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Wird mein Land gegen mich schreien und werden miteinander seine Furchen weinen;

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

hab ich seine Früchte unbezahlt gegessen und das Leben der Ackerleute sauer gemacht:

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

so mögen mir Disteln wachsen für Weizen und Dornen für Gerste. Die Worte Hiobs haben ein Ende.

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
