»Mit meinen Augen habe ich einen Bund abgeschlossen, daß ich ja nicht lüstern nach einer Jungfrau blickte.

HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Trifft nicht Verderben den Frevler und Unglück die Überltäter?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?

Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Sieht er nicht meine Wege, und zählt er nicht alle meine Schritte?

¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Wenn ich mit Falschheit umgegangen bin und mein Fuß jemals der Täuschung zugeeilt ist:

Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,

If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Gott wäge mich auf gerechter Waage, so wird er meine Unschuld erkennen!

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

Wenn mein Schritt jemals vom rechten Wege abgewichen und mein Herz meinen Augen Folge geleistet hat und ein Flecken an meinen Händen kleben geblieben ist,

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fué tras mis ojos, y si algo se apegó á mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

so will ich säen und ein anderer möge es verzehren, und alles, was mir sproßt, möge ausgerissen werden!

Wenn mein Herz sich um eines Weibes willen hat betören lassen und ich an der Tür meines Nächsten auf der Lauer gestanden habe,

Si fué mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando á la puerta de mi prójimo:

If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

so soll mein Weib für einen andern die Mühle drehen und andere mögen sich über sie hinstrecken!

Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Denn das wäre eine Schandtat gewesen und das ein Vergehen für den Strafrichter;

ja, ein Feuer wäre das gewesen, das bis zum Abgrund gefressen und meinen gesamten Besitz bis auf die Wurzel hätte vernichten müssen.

Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta el sepulcro, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

Wenn ich das Recht meines Knechtes und meiner Magd mißachtet hätte, sooft sie im Streit mit mir lagen:

What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Hat nicht mein Schöpfer auch ihn im Mutterleibe geschaffen und ein und derselbe uns im Mutterschoße gebildet?

El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Wenn ich den Geringen ihr Begehren versagt und die Augen der Witwe habe schmachten lassen

Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

und meinen Bissen für mich allein verzehrt habe, ohne daß der Verwaiste sein Teil davon genossen hat –

nein, von meiner Jugend an ist er mir ja wie einem Vater aufgewachsen, und von meiner Mutter Leibe an bin ich ein Beschützer für jenen gewesen –;

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

wenn ich jemand habe verkommen sehen aus Mangel an Kleidung und daß ein Armer keine Schlafdecke hatte,

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

und dann seine Hüften mich nicht gesegnet haben und er sich nicht durch meiner Lämmer Wolle erwärmt hat;

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

wenn ich meine Faust jemals gegen eine Waise geschwungen habe, weil ich im Tor auf Beistand rechnen konnte:

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

so möge meine Schulter von ihrem Nacken fallen und mein Arm aus seiner Röhre ausgebrochen werden!

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Denn als ein Schrecken wäre auf mich das Strafgericht Gottes eingedrungen, und vor seiner Erhabenheit hätte ich nicht zu bestehen vermocht.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

Wenn ich je auf Gold mein Vertrauen gesetzt und zum Feingold gesagt habe: ›Du bist meine Zuversicht!‹;

Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

wenn ich mich darüber gefreut habe, daß mein Vermögen groß war und daß meine Hand Ansehnliches erworben hatte;

Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

wenn ich die Sonne angeschaut habe, wie hell sie strahlt, und den Mond, wie er in Pracht dahinwandelt,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

und mein Herz sich insgeheim hat betören lassen, daß ich ihnen eine Kußhand zuwarf:

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

auch das wäre eine Verschuldung für den Strafrichter gewesen, denn damit hätte ich Gott in der Höhe die Treue gebrochen. –

Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

Wenn ich mich je über das Unglück meines Feindes gefreut und darüber gejubelt habe, daß ein Mißgeschick ihm zugestoßen war –

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

nein, nie habe ich meiner Zunge zu sündigen gestattet, daß sie durch einen Fluch sein Leben gefordert hätte –

(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)

Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

wenn meine Zeltgenossen nicht gesagt haben: ›Wo ist einer, der vom Fleisch seines Schlachtviehs nicht satt geworden wäre?‹ –;

Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.

If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

nein, der Fremdling durfte nicht im Freien übernachten, und meine Tür hielt ich dem Wanderer offen –;

El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

wenn ich meine Übertretungen, wie Menschen tun, verheimlicht habe, indem ich mein Vergehen in meinem Busen verbarg,

Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

weil ich mich vor der großen Menge scheute und die Mißachtung der Geschlechter mich schreckte, so daß ich mich still verhielt, nicht vor die Tür hinaustrat;

Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

»O hätte ich doch einen, der mich anhören wollte! Siehe, hier ist meine Unterschrift! Der Allmächtige antworte mir! Und hätte ich doch die von meinem Gegner ausgefertigte Klageschrift!

¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.

Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Wahrlich, an meiner Schulter wollte ich sie zur Schau tragen, als Ehrenkranz sie mir um die Schläfe winden!

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

Denn über die Zahl meiner Schritte wollte ich ihm Rede stehen, wie zu einem Fürsten müßte er herannahen!« †Die Reden Hiobs sind zu Ende.

wenn mein Acker je über mich geschrien und seine Furchen allesamt geweint haben;

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

wenn ich seinen Ertrag ohne Zahlung verzehrt und seinen Besitzer ums Leben gebracht habe:

Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

so sollen mir Disteln statt des Weizens aufgehen und Unkraut statt der Gerste!«

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
