HICE pacto con mis ojos: ¿cómo pues había yo de pensar en virgen?

Porque de otra suerte, ¿qué comunicación tendría conmigo desde arriba Dios, ni qué parte me daría el Todopoderoso de su celestial herencia?
Porque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente de las alturas?
For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high?
Pues qué, ¿acaso no está establecida la perdición para los malvados, y el desheredamiento para los que cometen el pecado?
¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, y extrañamiento para los que obran iniquidad?
Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?
¿No es así que está el Señor observando mis caminos, y contando todos mis pasos?
¿No ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?
Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Si creéis que he seguido el camino de la vanidad, y que han corrido mis pies a urdir fraudes contra el prójimo,
Si anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró á engaño,
If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
“If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit
péseme Dios en su justa balanza; y él dará a conocer mi sencillez.
Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.
Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

Si desvié mis pasos del camino recto, y si mi corazón se fue tras de mis ojos, y se apegó alguna mancha a mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

siembre yo, y cómase otro el fruto y sea desarraigado mi linaje.

sea mi mujer manceba de otro, y sirva a otros de prostituta.
Muela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.
Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Porque es el adulterio un crimen enorme, y una iniquidad e injusticia horrenda.
Porque es maldad é iniquidad, que han de castigar los jueces.
For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

Es un fuego que consume hasta el exterminio, y que desarraiga todos los retoños.

Si me desdeñé de entrar en juicio con mi siervo y con mi sierva, cuanto tenían que pedirme alguna cosa en justicia,

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

¿qué será de mí cuando Dios haya de venir a juzgar? ¿Y qué podré responderle cuando me pregunte?
¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?
What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

¿Acaso el que me creó a mí en las entrañas de mi madre, no es el mismo Dios que le ha creado a él? ¿No fue él el que nos formó a ambos en el seno materno?
El que en el vientre me hizo á mí, ¿no lo hizo á él? ¿y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Si negué a los hombres lo que pedían; si burlé jamás la esperanza de la viuda;
Si estorbé el contento de los pobres, é hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;
If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

si comí solo mi bocado, y no comió también de él el huérfano

(pues desde la infancia creció conmigo la misericordia, habiendo salido conmigo del vientre de mi madre);

Si he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;
If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

si no me llenaron de bendiciones los miembros de su cuerpo, al verse abrigados con la lana de mis ovejas;
Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;
If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;
si alcé mi mano contra el huérfano, aun viéndome superior en el tribunal,
Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viese que me ayudarían en la puerta;
If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

despréndase mi hombro de su coyuntura, y quiébrese mi brazo con todos sus huesos.
Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.
Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

Porque yo siempre temí a Dios, considerando su enojo como olas hinchadas contra mí, y nunca puede soportar el peso de su majestad.
Porque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.
For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.
Si yo creí que consistiese en el oro mi poder, y si dije al oro más acendrado: En ti pongo mi confianza;
Si puse en oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;
If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

si puse mi consuelo en mis grandes riquezas, y en los muchos bienes que adquirieron mis manos;
Si me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicase, y de que mi mano hallase mucho;
If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

si mirando al sol cuando brillante nacía, o la luna en su mayor claridad,
Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y á la luna cuando iba hermosa,
If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

se regocijó interiormente mi corazón, y apliqué mi mano a la boca,
Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano:
And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;
lo cual es un delito grandísimo, y un renegar del altísimo Dios;
Esto también fuera maldad juzgada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.
This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

si me holgué de la ruina del que me aborrecía, y celebré con aplauso el mal que le vino, castígueme Dios.

Mas no fue así; porque no permití que mi lengua pecase, demandando con maldiciones su muerte.
(Que ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;)
Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);
¿Y las gentes de mi casa, no llegaron a prorrumpir: Quién nos diera que pudiésemos saciarnos de sus carnes?
Cuando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diese de su carne! nunca nos hartaríamos.
If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’
Jamás el peregrino se quedó al descubierto; siempre estuvo mi puerta abierta al pasajero.
El extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.
The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);
Si, como suelen hacer los hombres, encubrí mi pecado, y oculté en mi pecho mi maldad;
Si encubrí, como los hombres mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;
If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,
si me intimidó el mucho gentío, o me atemorizó el desprecio de los parientes, y no más bien callé y sufrí, y me estuve quieto en mi casa, sea yo castigado de Dios.
Porque quebrantaba á la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta:
Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—
¡Oh, quién me diera uno que desapasionadamente me oyese y que el Todopoderoso otorgase mi petición, y escribiese el proceso el mismo que juzga,
¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi impresión es que el Omnipotente testificaría por mí, aunque mi adversario me hiciera el proceso.
Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!
para que yo pudiese llevarla sobre mis hombros, y ceñírmela como una diadema!
Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.
Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.
A cada paso mío le iría recitando y se le presentaría a Dios como a mi príncipe.
Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría á él.
I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him like a prince.
Finalmente, si la tierra que poseo clama contra mí, y los surcos se lamentan con ella;
Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;
If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;
si he comido sus frutos sin pagar el precio, y he apremiado las personas de los cultivadores,
Si comí su sustancia sin dinero, ó afligí el alma de sus dueños;
If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,
me nazcan abrojos en vez de trigo, y espinas en lugar de cebada.
En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinas en lugar de cebada. Acábanse las palabras de Job.
Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
