1ED Elihu proseguì a parlare, e disse:
2Voi savi, udite i miei ragionamenti; E voi intendenti, porgetemi l'orecchio.
3Perciocchè l'orecchio esamina i ragionamenti, Come il palato assapora ciò che si deve mangiare.
4Proponiamoci la dirittura, Giudichiamo fra noi che cosa sia bene.
5Conciossiachè Giobbe abbia detto: Io son giusto; Iddio mi ha tolta la mia ragione.
6Mentirei io intorno alla mia ragione? La saetta, con la quale son ferito, è dolorosissima, Senza che vi sia misfatto in me.
7Quale è l'uomo simile a Giobbe, Che beve lo scherno come acqua?
8E che cammina in compagnia con gli operatori d'iniquità, E va con gli uomini empi?
9Perciocchè egli ha detto: L'uomo non fa niun profitto Di rendersi grato a Dio.
10Perciò, uomini di senno, ascoltatemi; Tolga Iddio che vi sia empietà in Dio, O perversità nell'Onnipotente.
11Perciocchè egli rende all'uomo secondo l'opera sua, E fa trovare a ciascuno secondo la sua via.
12Sì veramente Iddio non opera empiamente, E l'Onnipotente non perverte la ragione.
13Chi gli ha commesso il governo della terra? E chi gli ha imposta la cura del mondo tutto intiero?
14Se egli ponesse mente all'uomo, Egli ritrarrebbe a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio;
15Ogni carne insieme trapasserebbe, E l'uomo ritornerebbe nella polvere.
16Se pur tu hai del senno, ascolta questo; Porgi l'orecchio alla voce de' miei ragionamenti.
17Di vero, colui che odia la dirittura signoreggerebbe egli? E condannerai tu colui che è sommamente giusto?
18Direbbesi egli ad un re: Scellerato? E a' principi: Empio?
19Quanto meno a colui che non ha riguardo alla qualità de' principi, Ed appo cui non è riconosciuto il possente, Per essere antiposto al povero, Perchè essi tutti sono opera delle sue mani?
20Essi muoiono in un momento, E di mezza notte tutto un popolo è conquassato, e perisce; E il potente è tolto via senza opera di mani.
21Perciocchè gli occhi suoi son sopra le vie dell'uomo, Ed egli vede tutti i passi di esso.
22Non vi è oscurità, nè ombra di morte alcuna, Ove si possan nascondere gli operatori d'iniquità.
23Perciocchè Iddio non ha più riguardo all'uomo, Quando esso è per venire in giudicio davanti a lui.
24Egli fiacca i possenti incomprensibilmente, E ne costituisce altri in luogo loro.
25Perciò, conoscendo egli le opere loro, Nel girar d'una notte son fiaccati,
26Egli li sbatte come empi, In luogo di molti spettatori;
27Perciocchè si son rivolti indietro da lui, E non hanno considerate tutte le sue vie;
28Facendo pervenire infino a lui il grido del povero, E facendogli udire lo strido degli afflitti.
29Se egli rimanda in pace, chi condannerà? E se nasconde la sua faccia, chi lo riguarderà? O sia una nazione intiera, o un uomo solo;
30Acciocchè l'uomo profano non regni più E che il popolo non sia più tenuto ne' lacci.
31Certo ei ti si conveniva indirizzarti a Dio, dicendo: Io ho portato la pena; io non peccherò più.
32Se vi è alcuna cosa, oltre a ciò che io veggo, mostramelo; Se io ho operato perversamente, io non continuerò più.
33Vorresti tu, ch'egli ti facesse la retribuzione di ciò ch'è proceduto da te? Sei tu che rifiuti ed eleggi, non già io; Di' pure ciò che tu sai.
34Gli uomini di senno diranno meco, E l'uomo savio mi acconsentirà,
35Che Giobbe non parla con conoscimento, E che le sue parole non sono con intendimento.
36O padre mio, sia pur Giobbe provato infino all'ultimo, Per cagione delle sue repliche, simili a quelle degli uomini iniqui.
37Perciocchè altrimenti egli aggiungerà misfatto al suo peccato, Si batterà a palme fra noi, E moltiplicherà le parole sue contro a Dio.

1ADEMÁS respondió Eliú, y dijo:
2Oid, sabios, mis palabras; y vosotros, doctos, estadme atentos.
3Porque el oído prueba las palabras, como el paladar gusta para comer.
4Escojamos para nosotros el juicio, conozcamos entre nosotros cuál sea lo bueno:
5Porque Job ha dicho: Yo soy justo, y Dios me ha quitado mi derecho.
6¿He de mentir yo contra mi razón? Mi saeta es gravosa sin haber yo prevaricado.
7¿Qué hombre hay como Job, que bebe el escarnio como agua?
8Y va en compañía con los que obran iniquidad, y anda con los hombres maliciosos.
9Porque ha dicho: De nada servirá al hombre el conformar su voluntad con Dios.
10Por tanto, varones de seso, oidme: Lejos esté de Dios la impiedad, y del Omnipotente la iniquidad.
11Porque él pagará al hombre según su obra, y él le hará hallar conforme á su camino.
12Sí, por cierto, Dios no hará injusticia, y el Omnipotente no pervertirá el derecho.
13¿Quién visitó por él la tierra? ¿y quién puso en orden todo el mundo?
14Si él pusiese sobre el hombre su corazón, y recogiese así su espíritu y su aliento,
15Toda carne perecería juntamente, y el hombre se tornaría en polvo.
16Si pues hay en ti entendimiento, oye esto: escucha la voz de mis palabras.
17¿Enseñorearáse el que aborrece juicio? ¿y condenarás tú al que es tan justo?
18¿Hase de decir al rey: Perverso; y á los príncipes: Impíos?
19¿Cuánto menos á aquel que no hace acepción de personas de príncipes, ni el rico es de él más respetado que el pobre? porque todos son obras de sus manos.
20En un momento morirán, y á media noche se alborotarán los pueblos, y pasarán, y sin mano será quitado el poderoso.
21Porque sus ojos están sobre los caminos del hombre, y ve todos sus pasos.
22No hay tinieblas ni sombra de muerte donde se encubran los que obran maldad.
23No carga pues él al hombre más de lo justo, para que vaya con Dios á juicio.
24El quebrantará á los fuertes sin pesquisa, y hará estar otros en su lugar.
25Por tanto él hará notorias las obras de ellos, cuando los trastornará en la noche, y serán quebrantados.
26Como á malos los herirá en lugar donde sean vistos:
27Por cuanto así se apartaron de él, y no consideraron todos sus caminos;
28Haciendo venir delante de él el clamor del pobre, y que oiga el clamor de los necesitados.
29Y si él diere reposo, ¿quién inquietará? si escondiere el rostro, ¿quién lo mirará? Esto sobre una nación, y lo mismo sobre un hombre;
30Haciendo que no reine el hombre hipócrita para vejaciones del pueblo.
31De seguro conviene se diga á Dios: Llevado he ya castigo, no más ofenderé:
32Enséñame tú lo que yo no veo: que si hice mal, no lo haré más.
33¿Ha de ser eso según tu mente? El te retribuirá, ora rehuses, ora aceptes, y no yo: di si no, lo que tú sabes.
34Los hombres de seso dirán conmigo, y el hombre sabio me oirá:
35Que Job no habla con sabiduría, y que sus palabras no son con entendimiento.
36Deseo yo que Job sea probado ampliamente, á causa de sus respuestas por los hombres inicuos.
37Porque á su pecado añadió impiedad: bate las manos entre nosotros, y contra Dios multiplica sus palabras.

1Furthermore Elihu answered and said,
2Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.
3For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
4Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.
5For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.
6Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.
7What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?
8Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
9For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
10Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
11For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
12Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
13Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?
14If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;
15All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
16If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.
17Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?
18Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
19How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
20In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
21For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
22There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
24He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.
25Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
26He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
27Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:
28So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
29When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
30That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
31Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:
32That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
33Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.
34Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.
35Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
36My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
37For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
World English Bible
1Moreover Elihu answered,
2“Hear my words, you wise men. Give ear to me, you who have knowledge.
3For the ear tries words, as the palate tastes food.
4Let us choose for us that which is right. Let us know among ourselves what is good.
5For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, God has taken away my right.
6Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.’
7What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,
8who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men?
9For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’
10“Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
11For the work of a man he will give to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
12Yes surely, God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.
13Who put him in charge of the earth? Or who has appointed him over the whole world?
14If he set his heart on himself, if he gathered to himself his spirit and his breath,
15all flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.
16“If now you have understanding, hear this. Listen to the voice of my words.
17Should even one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty,
18who says to a king, ‘Vile!’ or to nobles, ‘Wicked!’?
19He doesn’t respect the persons of princes, nor respect the rich more than the poor, for they all are the work of his hands.
20In a moment they die, even at midnight. The people are shaken and pass away. The mighty are taken away without a hand.
21“For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings.
22There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23For he doesn’t need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment.
24He breaks mighty men in pieces in ways past finding out, and sets others in their place.
25Therefore he takes knowledge of their works. He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
26He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
27because they turned away from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways,
28so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him. He heard the cry of the afflicted.
29When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? He is over a nation or a man alike,
30that the godless man may not reign, that there be no one to ensnare the people.
31“For has any said to God, ‘I am guilty, but I will not offend any more.
32Teach me that which I don’t see. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?
33Shall his recompense be as you desire, that you refuse it? For you must choose, and not I. Therefore speak what you know.
34Men of understanding will tell me, yes, every wise man who hears me:
35‘Job speaks without knowledge. His words are without wisdom.’
36I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men.
37For he adds rebellion to his sin. He claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.”
