Ceins tes reins comme un homme, et je t’interrogerai et tu m’instruiras !
Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
Où étais-tu quand j’ai fondé la terre ? Déclare-le-moi, si tu as de l’intelligence.
¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
Qui lui a établi sa mesure, – si tu le sais ? Ou qui a étendu le cordeau sur elle ?
¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles assises, ou qui a placé sa pierre angulaire,
¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
Quand les étoiles du matin chantaient ensemble, et que tous les fils de Dieu éclataient de joie ?
Cuando las estrellas todas del alba alababan, y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Et qui a renfermé la mer dans des portes, quand elle rompit les bornes et sortit de la matrice,
¿Quién encerró con puertas la mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como saliendo de madre;
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, et de l’obscurité ses langes ;
Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
Quand je lui découpai ses limites et lui mis des barres et des portes,
Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
Et que je dis : Tu viendras jusqu’ici et tu n’iras pas plus loin, et ici s’arrêtera l’orgueil de tes flots ?
Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
As-tu, de ta vie, commandé au matin ? As-tu montré à l’aube du jour sa place,
¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
Pour qu’elle saisisse les bords de la terre, et que les méchants en soient secoués ?
Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
Elle se change comme l’argile d’un sceau, et toutes choses se présentent parées comme d’un vêtement ;
Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
Et leur lumière est ôtée aux méchants, et le bras levé est cassé.
Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
Es-tu allé aux sources de la mer, et t’es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l’abîme ?
¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
Les portes de la mort se sont-elles découvertes à toi ? Et as-tu vu les portes de l’ombre de la mort ?
¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Ton regard a-t-il pénétré jusque dans les vastes espaces de la terre ? Dis-le, si tu connais tout cela.
¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
Où est le chemin vers le séjour de la lumière ? et les ténèbres, où est leur place ?
¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
Pour que tu les prennes à leur limite, et que tu connaisses les sentiers de leur maison ?
¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
Tu le sais, car tu étais né alors, et le nombre de tes jours est grand !
¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
Es-tu allé aux trésors de la neige, et as-tu vu les trésors de la grêle,
¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
Que j’ai mis en réserve pour le temps de la détresse, pour le jour du combat et de la guerre ?
Lo cual tengo yo reservado para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

Par quel chemin se distribue la lumière, et le vent d’orient se répand-il sur la terre ?

By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
Qui a découpé des canaux aux torrents de pluie, et un chemin à l’éclair des tonnerres,
¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión, y camino á los relámpagos y truenos,
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
Pour faire pleuvoir sur une terre où il n’y a personne, sur le désert où il n’y a pas d’hommes ;
Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
Pour rassasier les lieux désolés et déserts, pour faire germer les pousses de l’herbe ?
Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

La pluie a-t-elle un père ? ou qui engendre les gouttes de la rosée ?

Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

Du sein de qui sort la glace ? et le frimas des cieux, qui l’enfante ?
¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
Devenues pierre, les eaux se cachent, et la surface de l’abîme se prend.
Las aguas se endurecen á manera de piedra, y congélase la haz del abismo.
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
Peux-tu serrer les liens des Pléiades, ou détacher les cordes d’Orion ?
¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
Fais-tu sortir les signes du zodiaque en leurs saisons, et mènes-tu la grande Ourse avec ses filles ?
¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
Connais-tu les lois des cieux, ou établis-tu leur empire sur la terre ?
¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
Peux-tu élever ta voix vers les nuages, en sorte que des torrents d’eau te couvrent ?
¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
As-tu lancé la foudre, en sorte qu’elle soit allée et t’ait dit : Me voici ?
¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
Qui a mis la sagesse dans les reins, ou qui donna l’intelligence à l’esprit ?
¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el interior? ¿ó quién dió al entendimiento la inteligencia?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
Qui a compté les nuages dans sa sagesse ? et qui verse les outres des cieux,
¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría? y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace parar,
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
Quand la poussière coule comme du métal en fusion et que les mottes se soudent entre elles ?
Cuando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza, y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
Est-ce toi qui chasses la proie pour la lionne, et qui rassasies l’appétit des lionceaux,

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
Quand ils sont couchés dans leurs tanières et se tiennent aux aguets dans leur fourré ?
—
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture quand ses petits crient à ✶Dieu et qu’ils errent sans nourriture ?

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
