⌞Prepare yourself for a difficult task like a man⌟, and I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
“Where were you at my laying the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you possess understanding.
¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurement? Yes, you do know. Or who stretched the measuring line upon it?
¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,
¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

when the morning stars were singing together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who shut the sea in with doors at its bursting, when it went out of the womb,

“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
at my making the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band,
Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
and I prescribed my rule for it, and I set bars and doors,
Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
and I said, ‘You shall come up to here, but you shall not go further, and here it will set a boundary ⌞for your proud surging waves⌟’?
Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
“Have you ⌞ever in your life⌟ commanded the morning? Have you made the dawn know its place,
¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
to take hold of the earth’s skirts so that the wicked might be shaken off from it?
Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

It is changed like clay under a seal, and they appear like a garment.
Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

And their light is withheld from the wicked, and their uplifted arm is broken.
Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

“Have you entered into the sea’s sources? Or have you walked around in the recesses of the deep?
¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of deep shadow?
¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?

Have you considered closely the earth’s vast expanse? Declare it, if you know all of it.
¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.

Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
“Where then is the way where the light dwells? And where then is its place,
¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
that you may take it to its territory, and that you might discern the paths to its home?
¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great.
¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
Have you entered into the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,

“Who has cut open a channel for the torrents and a way for the ⌞thunder bolts⌟,

Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
to bring rain on a land ⌞where no one lives⌟, a desert ⌞where no humans live⌟,
Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
to satisfy desert and wasteland, and to cause the ground to put forth the rising of grass?
Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?

Like stone the waters become hard, and the faces of the deep freeze.

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, or can you loosen the cords of Orion?
¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
Can you lead forth the southern constellations at their appointed time, or can you lead the Bear with its children?
¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
Do you know heaven’s statutes, or can you establish their rule on the earth?
¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
Can you lift up your voice to the clouds so that a flood of water may cover you?
¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go? And will they say to you, ‘Here we are’?
¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?

Who has put wisdom in the ibis, or who has given understanding to the rooster?

Who can number the clouds with wisdom? Or who can tilt heaven’s jars,

“Can you hunt prey for the lion? And can you satisfy the hunger of strong lions

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
when they are crouched in the dens, when they lie in the thicket in an ambush?
—
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
Who prepares for the crow its prey, when its young ones cry to God for help, and they wander around ⌞for lack of food⌟?

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
