¿Quién es ése que oscurece el consejo con palabras sin sabiduría?

Prepárate ahora para la lucha pues voy a exigir de ti algunas respuestas y tendrás que responderme.
Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
»¿Dónde estabas tú cuando yo eché las bases de la tierra? Dímelo, si tanto sabes.
¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
¿Sabes cómo se calcularon las dimensiones y quién fue el agrimensor?
¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
¿En qué se apoyan sus bases, y quién puso la piedra angular mientras las estrellas de la mañana cantaban unidas y todos los ángeles clamaban de júbilo?
¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,

Cuando las estrellas todas del alba alababan, y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

»¿Quién decretó las fronteras de los mares cuando ellos surgieron potentes desde lo profundo? ¿Quién los vistió de nubes y densas tinieblas,
¿Quién encerró con puertas la mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como saliendo de madre;
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,

Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
y los encerró
Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
diciendo: “¡Hasta aquí llegarán, y no más allá; y aquí se detendrá el orgullo de sus olas!”.
Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
»¿Alguna vez ordenaste al amanecer que apareciera y mandaste a la aurora que surgiera en el oriente?
¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
¿Alguna vez ordenaste al día que se extendiera hasta los confines de la tierra para poner fin a las maldades nocturnas?
Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
¿Alguna vez diste a la aurora su manto rojo,
Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
e invadiste la madriguera de los malvados y detuviste el brazo que estaba a punto de herir?
Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
»¿Has explorado las fuentes en donde nacen los mares, o has andado por los rincones del abismo?
¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
¿Se te ha revelado el sitio en donde están las puertas de la muerte? ¿Sabes cuál es la extensión de la tierra? ¡Dímelo; si lo sabes!
¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
»¿De dónde viene la luz, y cómo se llega allá? O dime respecto a la oscuridad: ¿de dónde viene?
¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
¿Puedes descubrir sus fronteras o ir a sus fuentes?
¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
Pero ¡naturalmente que sabes todo esto, pues naciste antes que todo ello fuera creado, y tienes mucha experiencia!
¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
»¿Has ido a los tesoros de la nieve, o visto en dónde se fabrica y almacena el granizo? Porque reservado lo tengo para cuando lo necesite en la guerra.
¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,

Lo cual tengo yo reservado para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

¿Dónde está el sendero que lleva al punto de donde se distribuye la luz? ¿Cuál es el origen del viento oriental?
¿Por qué camino se reparte la luz, y se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?
By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
¿Quién abrió los valles para que corran los torrentes de lluvia? ¿Quién trazó la senda al relámpago, para que la lluvia caiga en los desiertos estériles, de modo que la tierra reseca y yerma se sacie de agua, y nazca la tierna hierba?
¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión, y camino á los relámpagos y truenos,
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,

Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,

Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
¿Acaso tiene padre la lluvia? ¿De dónde viene el rocío?
¿Tiene la lluvia padre? ¿ó quién engendró las gotas del rocío?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
¿Quién es la madre del hielo y la escarcha?
¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
Porque el agua se transforma en hielo, duro como la piedra.
Las aguas se endurecen á manera de piedra, y congélase la haz del abismo.
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
»¿Puedes detener las estrellas? ¿Puedes frenar a Orión o las Pléyades?
¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
¿Puedes garantizar la correcta sucesión de las estaciones, o guiar la constelación de la Osa con sus satélites a través de los cielos?
¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
¿Conoces las leyes del universo, y cómo los cielos influyen en la tierra?
¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
»¿Puedes gritarles a las nubes y hacer que llueva?
¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
¿Puedes hacer que salga el relámpago y que el rayo caiga donde tú mandes?
¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
¿Quién da la intuición y el instinto?
¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el interior? ¿ó quién dió al entendimiento la inteligencia?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
¿Quién es tan sabio que pueda enumerar todas las nubes? ¿Quién puede derramar los cántaros del cielo cuando todo se ha vuelto polvo y terrones?
¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría? y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace parar,
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,

Cuando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza, y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
»¿Puedes tú, como la leona, cazar la presa para satisfacer el hambre de sus cachorros que esperan en su guarida, o mantenerte al acecho en la selva?

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
¿Quién alimenta a los cuervos cuando sus polluelos claman a Dios, y se agitan hambrientos en sus nidos?

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
