Quando Eliú acabou de falar, o Senhor respondeu a Jó, falando do meio da tempestade:

Prepare-se como simples homem, pois vou lhe fazer algumas perguntas e você me responderá.
Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
“Se você é sábio, diga-me onde você estava quando eu lancei os alicerces do mundo?
¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
Quem mediu os limites das suas dimensões? Quem usou a linha de medir e o fio de prumo? Diga-me, se você sabe!
¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
Sobre o que se apoiam os alicerces do mundo, e quem colocou a primeira pedra dessa construção,
¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
quando as primeiras estrelas cantavam e os anjos vibravam de alegria?
Cuando las estrellas todas del alba alababan, y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Quem foi que estabeleceu os limites para o mar, quando as águas surgiram do abismo?
¿Quién encerró con puertas la mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como saliendo de madre;
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
Quem foi que cobriu o oceano de nuvens e escuridão?
Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
Onde você estava quando tracei os limites ao mar, de onde as ondas não podem passar,
Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
e disse: ‘Até aqui você pode vir, mas daqui para a frente as suas ondas altas e orgulhosas não podem passar’?
Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
“Por acaso, algum dia, uma única vez, você deu ordem ao sol para aparecer e indicou o lugar onde ele deveria surgir?
¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
Você já deu ordem à luz do dia para brilhar por toda a terra para que sacudisse os perversos e os expulsasse dos seus esconderijos?
Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
A terra toma forma como o barro sob um sinete; suas feições sobressaem como uma veste.
Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
Aos ímpios é negada a sua luz, e o braço levantado para ferir se quebranta.
Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
“Por acaso você conhece as fontes que produzem os mares e oceanos? Já andou pelo fundo escuro dos mares?
¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
Você sabe onde ficam as portas do reino dos mortos? Você já viu as portas da profunda escuridão?
¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Você tem uma ideia do tamanho da terra? Responda-me, se é que você sabe!
¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
“De onde surge a luz, de onde ela vem? E onde é que se escondem as trevas?
¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
Você é capaz de dizer onde elas ficam guardadas ou como fazer para chegar lá?
¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
Sim, talvez você conheça, pois você já tinha nascido e já viveu tantos anos!
¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
“Você já entrou no meu depósito, onde guardo a neve e a geada, e as chuvas de pedras,
¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
para usar em tempos de sofrimento e como arma contra os meus inimigos?
Lo cual tengo yo reservado para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

Diga-me onde fica o caminho pelo qual a luz chega ao mundo! Diga-me por onde o vento leste vem e se espalha por toda a terra!
¿Por qué camino se reparte la luz, y se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?
By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
Foi você quem abriu os canais para a água das grandes chuvas e o caminho por onde passa a tempestade?
¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión, y camino á los relámpagos y truenos,
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
Quem faz a chuva cair no deserto seco e vazio, em lugares que ninguém mora?
Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
Quem rega as terras secas e despovoadas, transformando terra inútil em terra boa e produtiva, onde as plantas voltam a crescer?
Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
Por acaso a chuva tem pai? Quem é o pai do orvalho da noite?
¿Tiene la lluvia padre? ¿ó quién engendró las gotas del rocío?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
Quem é a mãe do gelo e da geada,
¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
que faz com que as águas se tornem duras como pedra e a superfície com uma camada de gelo?
Las aguas se endurecen á manera de piedra, y congélase la haz del abismo.
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
“Por acaso você pode acorrentar as estrelas do Sete-estrelo? Ou então separar as cordas do Órion?
¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
Você é capaz de fazer as várias constelações aparecerem no céu na época determinada? Pode guiar a Ursa Maior pelo céu, ou a Ursa Menor?
¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
Você conhece as leis que governam o universo? Sabe até onde essas leis se aplicam à terra?
¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
“Você é capaz de dar ordens às nuvens, para que elas deixem cair a chuva e você fique coberto por um dilúvio?
¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
É você que envia os relâmpagos, e eles lhe dizem: ‘Aqui estamos’?
¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
Quem fez as nuvens aparecerem na hora certa, como se tivessem sabedoria? Quem ensinou às estrelas cadentes o caminho a seguir, como se elas tivessem inteligência?
¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el interior? ¿ó quién dió al entendimiento la inteligencia?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
Quem conhece exatamente o número das nuvens? Quem pode despejar a chuva guardada nos depósitos do céu,
¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría? y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace parar,
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
quando o pó se endurece e os torrões se apegam uns aos outros?
Cuando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza, y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
“Por acaso é você que vai caçar a presa para a leoa e satisfaz a fome dos leões,
—
Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
enquanto eles descansam em suas covas ou cercam suas vítimas na floresta?
—
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
Quem dá alimento aos corvos quando os filhotes gritam a Deus e se agitam dentro do ninho por não terem o que comer?”

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
