Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

Ciñe, pues, ahora tus lomos, prepárate como varón que entra a pelear; yo te interrogaré, y tú respóndeme.
Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
Dime, ¿dónde estabas cuando yo echaba los cimientos de la tierra? Dímelo, ya que tanto sabes.
¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
¿Sabes tú quién tiró sus medidas? ¿O quién extendió sobre ella la primera cuerda?
¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
¿Qué apoyo, di, tienen sus basas? ¿O quién asentó su piedra angular
¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
cuando me alababan los nacientes astros, y prorrumpían en voces de júbilo todos los ángeles o hijos de Dios?
Cuando las estrellas todas del alba alababan, y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

¿Quién puso diques al mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como quien sale del seno de su madre;
¿Quién encerró con puertas la mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como saliendo de madre;
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
cuando lo cubría yo de nubes como de un vestido y le envolvía entre tinieblas como a un niño entre los pañales?
Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
Lo encerré dentro de los límites fijados por mí, y le puse cerrojos y compuertas,
Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
y dije: Hasta aquí llegarás, y no pasarás más adelante; y aquí quebrantarás tus hinchadas olas.
Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
¿Acaso después que estás en el mundo diste leyes a la luz de la mañana, y señalaste a la aurora el punto por donde debe salir?
¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
¿Has cogido con tus manos toda la tierra, y sacudídola, a fin de limpiar y expeler de ella a los impíos?
Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
Volverá a ser lodo o polvo el sello, y durará como un vestido que está consumiéndose.
Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
Se le quitará a los impíos su esplendor, y será aniquilado su poder excelso.
Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
¿Has entrado tú en las honduras del mar, y te has paseado por lo más profundo del abismo?
¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
¿Se te han abierto acaso las puertas de la muerte, y has visto aquellas entradas tenebrosas?
¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
¿Has averiguado la anchura de la tierra? Dime, si todo lo sabes,
¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
¿en qué parte reside la luz; y cuál es el lugar o depósito de las tinieblas,
¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
a fin de que puedas tú conducir a ambas cosas a sus propios lugares, como quien está enterado del camino que lleva a sus habitaciones?
¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
¿Sabías tú entonces que hubieses de nacer, y estabas instruido del número de tus días?
¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
¿Por ventura has entrado en los depósitos de la nieve, y has visto los otros donde está amontonado el granizo,
¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
los cuales tengo yo prevenidos para usar de ellos contra el enemigo en el día del combate y del conflicto?
Lo cual tengo yo reservado para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

Explícame; ¿Por qué camino se propaga la luz, y cómo se reparte el calor sobre la tierra?

By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
¿Quién señaló la carrera a un aguacero impetuosísimo, y el camino al sonoro trueno,
¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión, y camino á los relámpagos y truenos,
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
para llover sobre una tierra desierta, donde no hay hombre ninguno, donde no habita ningún mortal,
Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
fecundándola, aunque inhabitable y desolada, para que produzca la verde hierba?
Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
¿Quién es el padre de la lluvia? ¿O quién engendró las gotas del rocío?

Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
¿De qué seno salió el hielo? ¿Y quién produce la helada o escarcha que cae del aire?
¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
Las aguas se endurecen como piedras, y la superficie del mar se congela.
Las aguas se endurecen á manera de piedra, y congélase la haz del abismo.
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
¿Podrás tú por ventura atar o detener las brillantes estrellas de las Pléyades? ¿O desconcertar el giro del Orión?
¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
¿Eres tú acaso el que hace aparecer a su tiempo el lucero de la mañana, o resplandecer el de la tarde sobre los habitantes de la tierra?
¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
¿Entiendes tú el orden o movimientos de los cielos, y podrás dar la razón de su influjo sobre la tierra?
¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
¿Alzarás por ventura tu voz a las nubes, para mandarles que se deshagan en lluvias abundantes?
¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
¿Despacharás rayos, y éstos marcharán, y te dirán a la vuelta: Aquí estamos a tu mandar?
¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
¿Quién puso en el corazón del hombre la sabiduría? ¿O quién dio al gallo el instinto?
¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el interior? ¿ó quién dió al entendimiento la inteligencia?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
¿Quién podrá explicar la disposición de los cielos, o hacer cesar sus armoniosos movimientos?
¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría? y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace parar,
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
¿Dónde estabas cuando se formó en masa el polvo de la tierra, y se endurecieron sus terrones?
Cuando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza, y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
¿Andarás tú por ventura a coger caza para la leona, y saciarás el hambre de sus cachorros,

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
cuando están echados en sus cuevas, y acechando desde sus cavernas?

When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
¿Quién prepara al cuervo su alimento, cuando sus pollitos levantan sus graznidos hacia Dios, yendo de un lado a otro del nido, por no tener nada que comer?

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
