Job 3

After this, Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day,

Job answered:

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said: A man child is conceived.

Perezca el día en que yo nací, y la noche que se dijo: Varón es concebido.

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

“Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘There is a boy conceived.’

Let that day be turned into darkness, let not God regard it from above, and let not the light shine upon it.

Sea aquel día sombrío, y Dios no cuide de él desde arriba, ni claridad sobre él resplandezca.

Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

Let that day be darkness. Don’t let God from above seek for it, neither let the light shine on it.

Let darkness, and the shadow of death, cover it, let a mist overspread it, and let it be wrapped up in bitterness.

Aféenlo tinieblas y sombra de muerte; repose sobre él nublado, que lo haga horrible como caliginoso día.

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

Let a darksome whirlwind seize upon that night, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.

Ocupe la oscuridad aquella noche; no sea contada entre los días del año, ni venga en el número de los meses.

As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

Let that night be solitary, and not worthy of praise.

¡Oh si fuere aquella noche solitaria, que no viniera canción alguna en ella!

Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to raise up a leviathan:

Maldíganla los que maldicen al día, los que se aprestan para levantar su llanto.

Let the stars be darkened with the mist thereof: let it expect light, and not see it, nor the rising of the dawning of the day:

Oscurézcanse las estrellas de su alba; espere la luz, y no venga, ni vea los párpados de la mañana:

Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

Because it shut not up the doors of the womb that bore me, nor took away evils from my eyes.

Por cuanto no cerró las puertas del vientre donde yo estaba, ni escondió de mis ojos la miseria.

Why did I not die in the womb? why did I not perish when I came out of the belly?

¿Por qué no morí yo desde la matriz, o fuí traspasado en saliendo del vientre?

“Why didn’t I die from the womb? Why didn’t I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?

Why received upon the knees? why suckled at the breasts?

¿Por qué me previnieron las rodillas? ¿y para qué las tetas que mamase?

Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should nurse?

For now I should have been asleep and still, and should have rest in my sleep:

Pues que ahora yaciera yo, y reposara; durmiera, y entonces tuviera reposo,

For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,

With kings and consuls of the earth, who build themselves solitudes:

Con los reyes y con los consejeros de la tierra, que edifican para sí los desiertos;

With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;

with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;

Or with princes, that possess gold, and fill their houses with silver:

O con los príncipes que poseían el oro, que henchían sus casas de plata.

Or as a hidden untimely birth, I should not be; or as they that, being conceived, have not seen the light.

There the wicked cease from tumult, and there the wearied in strength are at rest.

And they sometime bound together without disquiet, have not heard the voice of the oppressor.

The small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.

Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to them that are in bitterness of soul?

¿Por qué se da luz al trabajado, y vida á los de ánimo en amargura,

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

That look for death, and it cometh not, as they that dig for a treasure:

And they rejoice exceedingly when they have found the grave?

To a man whose way is hidden, and God hath surrounded him with darkness?

Before I eat I sigh: and as overflowing waters, so is my roaring:

Pues antes que mi pan viene mi suspiro; y mis gemidos corren como aguas.

For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

For my sighing comes before I eat. My groanings are poured out like water.

For the fear which I feared, hath come upon me: and that which I was afraid of, hath befallen me.

Porque el temor que me espantaba me ha venido, y hame acontecido lo que temía.

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

For the thing which I fear comes on me, that which I am afraid of comes to me.

Have I not dissembled? have I not kept silence? have I not been quiet? and indignation is come upon me.

No he tenido paz, no me aseguré, ni me estuve reposado; vínome no obstante turbación.

I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither do I have rest; but trouble comes.”
