Entonces Elifaz de Temán, rompiendo el silencio, dijo:

Si empezamos a razonar contigo, quizá no te gustará lo que diremos; pero, ¿quién podrá contener las palabras que ahora vienen a la boca?
Si probáremos á hablarte, serte ha molesto; mas ¿quién podrá detener las palabras?
If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
Tú eras antes el que amaestraba a muchos; tú dabas vigor a los agobiados.
He aquí, tú enseñabas á muchos, y las manos flacas corroborabas;
Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
Behold, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands.
Tus palabras eran el sostén de los vacilantes, y tú fortalecías las trémulas rodillas de los débiles.
Al que vacilaba, enderezaban tus palabras, y esforzabas las rodillas que decaían.
Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
Your words have supported him who was falling, you have made the feeble knees firm.
Mas ahora que el azote ha descargado sobre ti, estás abatido; te ha tocado el Señor, y te has conturbado todo.
Mas ahora que el mal sobre ti ha venido, te es duro; y cuando ha llegado hasta ti, te turbas.
But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
But now it has come to you, and you faint. It touches you, and you are troubled.
¿Dónde está tu temor de Dios? ¿Dónde tu fortaleza, tu paciencia y la perfección de tu conducta antigua?
¿Es este tu temor, tu confianza, tu esperanza, y la perfección de tus caminos?
Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
Isn’t your piety your confidence? Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
Considera, te ruego, si pereció jamás ningún inocente, o cuándo los buenos han sido exterminados.
Recapacita ahora, ¿quién que fuera inocente se perdiera? y ¿en dónde los rectos fueron cortados?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
“Remember, now, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
Al contrario, lo que yo he visto es que los que han cultivado el vicio, han sembrado males, y males han cogido;
Como yo he visto, los que aran iniquidad y siembran injuria, la siegan.
Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble, reap the same.
y han perecido a un soplo de Dios; y han quedado consumidos al aliento de la indignación divina.
Perecen por el aliento de Dios, y por el espíritu de su furor son consumidos.
By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
By the breath of God they perish. By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
Así pereció el león que rugía y la leona que bramaba; y fueron desmenuzados los dientes de los leoncillos.
El bramido del león, y la voz del león, y los dientes de los leoncillos son quebrantados.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

Pereció de hambre el tigre por falta de presa, y los leoncillos se fueron cada uno por su lado.
El león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los hijos del león son esparcidos.
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.
The old lion perishes for lack of prey. The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.
Se me dijo en cierta ocasión una palabra recóndita, y mi oído, así como a hurtadillas, percibió algo de aquel blando zumbido.
El negocio también me era á mí oculto; mas mi oído ha percibido algo de ello.
Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

En el horror de una visión nocturna, cuando suele el sueño rendir los hombres,

quedé sobrecogido de pavor, y todo temblando, y se estremecieron todos mis huesos;
Sobrevínome un espanto y un temblor, que estremeció todos mis huesos:

y pasando por delante de mí un espíritu, se me erizaron los cabellos.

Se me apareció uno cuyo semblante no pude conocer, un espectro delante de mis ojos, y percibí una voz delicada como de un airecillo suave, que me decía:
Paróse un fantasma delante de mis ojos, cuyo rostro yo no conocí, y quedo, oí que decía:
It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes. Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,
¿Acaso un hombre creado por Dios será tenido por justo, o podrá creerse más puro que su Hacedor?
¿Si será el hombre más justo que Dios? ¿si será el varón más limpio que el que lo hizo?
Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
‘Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
Mira que no han sido firmes sus mismos ministros, y que halló culpa hasta en sus ángeles.
He aquí que en sus siervos no confía, y notó necedad en sus ángeles;
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
Behold, he puts no trust in his servants. He charges his angels with error.
¡Cuánto más serán consumidos y como roídos de la polilla, aquellos que habitan casas de barro, cimentadas sobre el polvo!
¡Cuánto más en los que habitan en casas de lodo, cuyo fundamento está en el polvo, y que serán quebrantados de la polilla!
How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?
How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!
De la noche a la mañana quedarán aniquilados; y por cuanto ninguno considera estas verdades, perecerán para siempre.
De la mañana á la tarde son quebrantados, y se pierden para siempre, sin haber quien lo considere.
They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
Between morning and evening they are destroyed. They perish forever without any regarding it.
Los restos que quedaren, serán arrancados; morirán en medio de su locura.
¿Su hermosura, no se pierde con ellos mismos? Mueren, y sin sabiduría.
Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.
Isn’t their tent cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.’
