“¡Cómo quisiera que mi angustia fuera pesada y que pusieran toda mi desgracia en la balanza!
¡Oh si pesasen al justo mi queja y mi tormento, y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
¡Resultaría más pesada que la arena del mar! Por eso mis palabras han sido tan amargas.
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas, therefore my words have been rash.
Porque tengo clavadas las flechas del Todopoderoso, y mi espíritu bebe su veneno; los terrores de Dios me atacan sin descanso.
Porque las saetas del Todopoderoso están en mí, cuyo veneno bebe mi espíritu; y terrores de Dios me combaten.
For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¿Acaso rebuzna el burro salvaje si tiene pasto? ¿O muge el buey si tiene forraje?
¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
¿Se puede comer sin sal lo que no tiene sabor? ¿Qué gusto se le halla a la clara de huevo?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Can that which has no flavor be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Me niego siquiera a tocarlos; esa comida me resulta asquerosa.
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
“¡Ojalá se cumpliera mi petición, que Dios me concediera lo que tanto deseo!
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
“Oh that I might have my request, that God would grant the thing that I long for,
¡Que Dios se decidiera a aplastarme de una vez, que soltara su mano y me quitara la vida!
Y que pluguiera á Dios quebrantarme; que soltara su mano, y me deshiciera!
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
Eso me serviría de consuelo; saltaría de alegría en medio de mi dolor implacable, porque jamás he negado las palabras del Santo.
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
¿Qué fuerzas me quedan para seguir esperando? ¿Qué destino me aguarda para tener paciencia?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
¿Tengo acaso la fuerza de las piedras? ¿Es mi carne de bronce?
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of bronze?
¿No ven que ya no puedo valerme por mí mismo y que se me han acabado los recursos?
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
“Quien está desesperado merece la ayuda de sus amigos, incluso si ha dejado de honrar al Todopoderoso.
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
Pero ustedes, hermanos míos, son traicioneros como un arroyo, como esos cauces que se quedan secos;
Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
que bajan turbios por el hielo y se llenan con la nieve que se derrite,
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
pero que en tiempo de sequía se evaporan y desaparecen en cuanto hace calor.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
In the dry season, they vanish. When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
Las caravanas se desvían de su ruta buscándolos, se pierden en el desierto y mueren.
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
Las caravanas de Temán los buscan con la mirada, los mercaderes de Sabá confían en encontrarlos;
Miraron los caminantes de Temán, los caminantes de Saba esperaron en ellas:
The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.
The caravans of Tema looked. The companies of Sheba waited for them.
pero se frustran por haber estado tan seguros, pues al llegar allí, se quedan decepcionados.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
Así son ustedes para mí ahora: no sirven para nada. Ven mi desgracia y se llenan de miedo.
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
¿Acaso les he pedido que me den algo, o que paguen por mí con sus riquezas?
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
¿Les pedí que me libraran del enemigo, o que me rescataran de manos de los opresores?
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
“Enséñenme y me quedaré callado; háganme entender en qué me he equivocado.
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
“Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand my error.
¡Qué poderosas son las palabras sinceras! Pero las críticas de ustedes, ¿qué demuestran?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
¿Pretenden censurar lo que digo, cuando las palabras de un desesperado se las lleva el viento?
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
¡Ustedes serían capaces de rifarse a un huérfano y de hacer negocio con su propio amigo!
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
Tengan la bondad de mirarme a la cara; les aseguro que no les voy a mentir.
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Recapaciten, por favor; no sean injustos. Piénsenlo bien, que en esto me va la justicia.
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
¿Hay maldad en mi lengua? ¿Acaso mi paladar no distingue la amargura?”
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
