Oh ! S'il était possible de peser mon affliction, et de mettre toutes ensemble mes calamités dans la balance !...
¡Oh si pesasen al justo mi queja y mi tormento, y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!

Elles seraient plus pesantes que le sable de la mer : voilà pourquoi mes paroles vont jusqu'à la folie.
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.

For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
Comment se nourrir d'un mets fade et sans sel, ou bien trouver du goût au jus d'une herbe insipide ?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

Ce que mon âme se refuse à toucher, c'est là mon pain, tout couvert de souillures.
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
Qui me donnera que mon vœu s'accomplisse, et que Dieu réalise mon attente !
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;

Que Dieu daigne me briser, qu'il laisse aller sa main et qu'il tranche mes jours !
Y que pluguiera á Dios quebrantarme; que soltara su mano, y me deshiciera!

Et qu'il me reste du moins cette consolation, que j'en tressaille dans les maux dont il m'accable : de n'avoir jamais transgressé les commandements du Saint !
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Quelle est ma force, pour que j'attende ? Quelle est la durée de mes jours, pour que j'aie patience ?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
Ma force est-elle la force des pierres, et ma chair est-elle d'airain ?
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?

Ne suis-je pas dénué de tout secours, et tout espoir de salut ne m'est-il pas enlevé ?
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
Le malheureux a droit à la pitié de son ami, eût-il même abandonné la crainte du Tout-Puissant.
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
Mes frères ont été perfides comme le torrent, comme l'eau des torrents qui s'écoulent.
Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;

Les glaçons en troublent le cours, la neige disparaît dans leurs flots.
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:

Au temps de la sécheresse, ils s'évanouissent ; aux premières chaleurs, leur lit est desséché.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.

Dans des sentiers divers leurs eaux se perdent, elles s'évaporent dans les airs, et ils tarissent.
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
Les caravanes de Théma comptaient sur eux ; les voyageurs de Saba espéraient en eux ;
Miraron los caminantes de Temán, los caminantes de Saba esperaron en ellas:
The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.

ils sont frustrés dans leur attente ; arrivés sur leurs bords, ils restent confondus.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
Ainsi vous me manquez à cette heure ; à la vue de l'infortune, vous fuyez épouvantés.
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
Vous ai-je dit : « Donnez-moi quelque chose, faites-moi part de vos biens,
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
délivrez-moi de la main de l'ennemi, arrachez-moi de la main des brigands ? »
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
Instruisez-moi, et je vous écouterai en silence ; faites-moi voir en quoi j'ai failli.
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
“Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand my error.
Qu'elles ont de force les paroles équitables ! Mais sur quoi tombe votre blâme ?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Voulez-vous donc censurer des mots ? Les discours échappés au désespoir sont la proie du vent.
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
Ah ! Vous jetez le filet sur un orphelin, vous creusez un piège à votre ami !
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
Maintenant, daignez vous retourner vers moi, et vous verrez si je vous mens en face.
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Revenez, ne soyez pas injustes ; revenez, et mon innocence apparaîtra.
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
Y a-t-il de l'iniquité sur ma langue, ou bien mon palais ne sait-il pas discerner le mal ?
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
