Fosse pur lo sdegno mio ben pesato, E fosse parimente la mia calamità levata in una bilancia!
¡Oh si pesasen al justo mi queja y mi tormento, y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
Perciocchè ora sarebbe trovata più pesante che la rena del mare; E però le mie parole vanno all'estremo.
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

Perchè le saette dell'Onnipotente sono dentro di me, E lo spirito mio ne beve il veleno; Gli spaventi di Dio sono ordinati in battaglia contro a me.
Porque las saetas del Todopoderoso están en mí, cuyo veneno bebe mi espíritu; y terrores de Dios me combaten.
For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

L'asino salvatico raglia egli presso all'erba? Il bue mugghia egli presso alla sua pastura?
¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
Una cosa insipida si mangia ella senza sale? Evvi sapore nella chiara ch'è intorno al torlo dell'uovo?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

Le cose che l'anima mia avrebbe ricusate pur di toccare Sono ora i miei dolorosi cibi.
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
Oh! venisse pur quel ch'io chieggio, E concedessemi Iddio quel ch'io aspetto!
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;

Questa sarebbe pure ancora la mia consolazione, Benchè io arda di dolore, e ch'egli non mi risparmi, Che io non ho nascoste le parole del Santo.
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Quale è la mia forza, per isperare? E quale è il termine che mi è posto, per prolungar l'aspettazione dell'anima mia?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
La mia forza è ella come la forza delle pietre? La mia carne è ella di rame?
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?

Non è egli così che io non ho più alcun ristoro in me? E che ogni modo di sussistere è cacciato lontan da me?
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
Benignità dovrebbe essere usata dall'amico inverso colui ch'è tutto strutto; Ma esso ha abbandonato il timor dell'Onnipotente,
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
I quali sono scuri per lo ghiaccio; E sopra cui la neve si ammonzicchia;
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
Ma poi, al tempo che corrono, vengono meno, Quando sentono il caldo, spariscono dal luogo loro.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.

I sentieri del corso loro si contorcono, Essi si riducono a nulla, e si perdono.
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.

Le schiere de' viandanti di Tema li riguardavano, Le carovane di Seba ne aveano presa speranza;

Ma si vergognano di esservisi fidati; Essendo giunti fin là, sono confusi.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.

Perciocchè ora voi siete venuti a niente; Avete veduta la ruina, ed avete avuta paura.
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.

Vi ho io detto: Datemi, E fate presenti delle vostre facoltà per me?
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
E liberatemi di man del nemico, E riscuotetemi di man de' violenti?
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
Insegnatemi, ed io mi tacerò; E ammaestratemi, se pure ho errato in qualche cosa.
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

Quanto son potenti le parole di dirittura! E che potrà in esse riprendere alcun di voi?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Stimate voi che parlare sia convincere? E che i ragionamenti di un uomo che ha perduta ogni speranza non sieno altro che vento?
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
E pure ancora voi vi gittate addosso all'orfano, E cercate di far traboccare il vostro amico.
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
Ora dunque piacciavi riguardare a me, E se io mento in vostra presenza.
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Deh! ravvedetevi; che non siavi iniquità; Da capo, il dico, ravvedetevi, io son giusto in questo affare.
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
Evvi egli iniquità nella mia lingua? Il mio palato non sa egli discerner le cose perverse?
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
