Denn dann würde es schwerer sein als der Sand der Meere; darum sind unbesonnen meine Worte.
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

Denn die Pfeile des Allmächtigen sind in mir, ihr Gift trinkt mein Geist; die Schrecken Gottes stellen sich in Schlachtordnung gegen mich auf.

For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

Schreit ein Wildesel beim Gras, oder brüllt ein Rind bei seinem Futter?
¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
Wird Fades, Salzloses gegessen? Oder ist Geschmack im Eiweiß?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?

Was meine Seele sich weigerte anzurühren, das ist wie meine ekle Speise.
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.

O, dass doch meine Bitte einträfe und Gott mein Verlangen gewährte,
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;

So würde noch mein Trost sein, und ich würde frohlocken in schonungsloser Pein, dass ich die Worte des Heiligen nicht verleugnet habe.
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Was ist meine Kraft, dass ich ausharren, und was mein Ende, dass ich mich gedulden sollte?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
Ist Kraft der Steine meine Kraft, oder ist mein Fleisch aus Kupfer?
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?

Ist es nicht so, dass keine Hilfe in mir und jede Kraft aus mir vertrieben ist?
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
Dem Verzagten gebührt Milde von seinem Freund, sonst wird er die Furcht des Allmächtigen verlassen.
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.

Meine Brüder haben sich trügerisch erwiesen wie ein Wildbach, wie das Bett der Wildbäche, die hinschwinden,
Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
die trübe sind von Eis, in die der Schnee sich birgt.
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
Zur Zeit, wenn sie erwärmt werden, versiegen sie; wenn es heiß wird, sind sie von ihrer Stelle verschwunden.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.

Es schlängeln sich die Pfade ihres Laufes, ziehen hinauf in die Öde und verlieren sich.
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
Es blickten hin die Karawanen Temas, die Reisezüge Schebas hofften auf sie:

Sie wurden beschämt, weil sie auf sie vertraut hatten, sie kamen hin und wurden zuschanden.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
Denn jetzt seid ihr zu nichts geworden; ihr seht einen Schrecken und fürchtet euch.
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.

Habe ich etwa gesagt: Gebt mir und macht mir ein Geschenk von eurem Vermögen
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
und befreit mich aus der Hand des Bedrängers und erlöst mich aus der Hand der Gewalttätigen?
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
Belehrt mich, und ich will schweigen; und gebt mir zu erkennen, worin ich geirrt habe.
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

Wie eindringlich sind richtige Worte! Aber was tadelt der Tadel, der von euch kommt?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Gedenkt ihr, Reden zu tadeln? Für den Wind sind ja die Worte eines Verzweifelnden!
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
Sogar den Verwaisten würdet ihr verlosen, und über euren Freund einen Handel abschließen.
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
Und nun, lasst es euch gefallen, auf mich hinzublicken: Euch ins Angesicht werde ich doch wahrlich nicht lügen.
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Kehrt doch um, es geschehe kein Unrecht; ja, kehrt noch um, um meine Gerechtigkeit handelt es sich!
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
Ist Unrecht auf meiner Zunge? Oder sollte mein Gaumen Frevelhaftes nicht unterscheiden?
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
