“If only my vexation could be well weighed, and my calamity could be lifted up together with it in the balances,
¡Oh si pesasen al justo mi queja y mi tormento, y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
for then it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; therefore my words have been rash,
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

Does the wild ass bray over grass, or the ox bellow over its fodder?
¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
Can tasteless food be eaten without salt, or is there taste in the white of a marshmallow plant?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Can that which has no flavor be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
⌞I refused⌟ to touch them; they are like ⌞food that will make me ill⌟.
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
“⌞O that⌟ my request may come, and that God may grant my hope,
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
“Oh that I might have my request, that God would grant the thing that I long for,
that God would decide that he would crush me, that he would let loose his hand and ⌞kill me⌟.
Y que pluguiera á Dios quebrantarme; que soltara su mano, y me deshiciera!
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

But it will still be my consolation, and I would recoil in ⌞unrelenting⌟ pain, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that ⌞I should hold out⌟?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
Or is my strength like the strength of stones? Or is my flesh bronze?
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?

⌞Indeed⌟, my help is not in me, and any success is driven from me.
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
“Loyal love should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of Shaddai.
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis they flow away,
Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
which are growing dark because of ice upon them, it will pile up snow.
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
In time they dry up, they disappear; when it is hot, they vanish from their place.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
In the dry season, they vanish. When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
The paths of their way wind around; they go up into the wasteland, and they perish.
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.

They are disappointed, because they trusted; they came ⌞here⌟ and they are confounded.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
“For now you have become ⌞such⌟; you see terrors, and you fear.
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
Is it because I have said, ‘Give to me,’ or, ‘Offer a bribe for me from your wealth’?
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
or, ‘Save me from the foe’s hand,’ or, ‘Ransom me from the tyrants’ hand’?
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
Teach me, and I myself will be silent; and make me understand how I have gone astray.
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

How painful are ⌞upright words⌟! But what does ⌞your reproof⌟ reprove?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Do you intend to reprove my words and consider the words of a desperate man as wind?
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
Even over the orphan you would cast the lot, and you would bargain over your friend.
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
“⌞Therefore⌟ be prepared, turn to me, and I surely will not lie to your face.
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Please turn, let no injustice happen; indeed, turn, ⌞my righteousness is still intact⌟.
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
Is there injustice on my tongue? Or can my palate not discern calamity?
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
