O daß mein Unmut und mein Unglück gegeneinander abgewogen und zugleich auf eine Waage gelegt würden!
¡Oh si pesasen al justo mi queja y mi tormento, y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
Denn nun ist es schwerer als Meeressand; darum sind meine Reden so verwirrt.
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

Denn die Pfeile des Allmächtigen stecken in mir, mein Geist saugt ihr Gift; die Schrecken Gottes bestürmen mich.

For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

Schreit auch ein Wildesel beim Gras, brüllt auch ein Ochse, wenn er Futter hat?
¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
Kann man auch Fades essen ohne Salz, findet man am Eiweiß irgendwelchen Geschmack?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

Was meine Seele zu berühren verschmähte, das ist jetzt mein täglich Brot!
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
O daß doch käme, was ich wünsche, und Gott meine Hoffnung erfüllte:
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

daß es doch Gott gefiele, mich zu zermalmen, seine Hand auszustrecken und mich abzuschneiden!
Y que pluguiera á Dios quebrantarme; que soltara su mano, y me deshiciera!
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

So bliebe mir noch der Trost (worüber ich frohlocken würde im schonungslosen Schmerz), daß ich von den Worten des Heiligen nicht abgefallen bin!
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Wie groß ist denn meine Kraft, daß ich noch ausharren, und wann kommt mein Ende, daß meine Seele sich gedulden soll?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
Ist mir denn der Steine Kraft gegeben, ist dies mein Fleisch etwa von Erz?
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?

Bin ich denn nicht hilflos und des Heils beraubt?
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
Dem Verzagten soll sein Freund Mitleid erzeigen, selbst wenn er von der Furcht des Allmächtigen lassen sollte.
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
Meine Brüder trügen wie ein Wildbach, wie das Bett der Wildbäche, die überlaufen,
Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
welche trübe werden vom Eis, wenn der Schnee sich darin birgt,
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:

die aber versiegen zur Zeit der Sommerglut und von ihrem Ort verschwinden, wenn es heiß wird.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
In the dry season, they vanish. When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
Es biegen ab von ihrem Wege die Karawanen, ziehen in die Wüste und verirren sich;
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
es schauen sie die Karawanen Themas, die Reisegesellschaften Sebas hoffen auf sie.
Miraron los caminantes de Temán, los caminantes de Saba esperaron en ellas:
The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.
The caravans of Tema looked. The companies of Sheba waited for them.
Aber sie werden in ihrer Hoffnung zuschanden; wenn sie dorthin kommen, sind sie enttäuscht.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
So seid auch ihr mir jetzt geworden; ihr schauet Schreckliches und fürchtet euch davor!
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
Habe ich gesagt: «Gebet mir etwas!» oder «Bringt mir etwas von eurem Vermögen her;
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
rettet mich aus der Hand des Feindes und erlöset mich von des Tyrannen Hand?»
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
Belehret mich, so will ich schweigen,
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
“Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand my error.
weiset mir nach, wo ich gefehlt! O wie eindringlich sind die Reden der Wahrheit! Aber was bringen eure Zurechtweisungen zu-recht?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Gedenket ihr Worte zu bekritteln und haltet die Reden eines Verzweifelten für Wind?
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
Ja, ihr werfet das Los über eine Waise und verhandelt euren Freund!
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
Und nun seid doch so gefällig und schaut mich an, ob ich euch ins Angesicht lügen werde!
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Kehret um, tut nicht Unrecht! Ja, kehret um! noch bin ich im Recht!
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
Ist denn Unrecht auf meiner Zunge, oder unterscheidet mein Gaumen nicht, was verderblich ist?
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
