¡Quisiera Dios que mis pecados por los que he merecido la ira, se pesaran en unas balanzas, con la calamidad que padezco!
¡Oh si pesasen al justo mi queja y mi tormento, y se alzasen igualmente en balanza!
Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
“Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances!
Se vería que mis males pesan tanto y más que la arena de mar, de aquí es que mis pecados están llenos de dolor.
Porque pesaría aquél más que la arena del mar: y por tanto mis palabras son cortadas.
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.

Porque parece que todas las saetas del Señor están clavadas en mí; el veneno de ellas va corroyendo mi espíritu, y terrores del Señor, o terribles espectros, combaten contra mí.
Porque las saetas del Todopoderoso están en mí, cuyo veneno bebe mi espíritu; y terrores de Dios me combaten.
For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¿Por ventura rebuzna el asno montés teniendo hierba? ¿O brama el buey teniendo delante un pesebre bien provisto?
¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto á la hierba? ¿muge el buey junto á su pasto?
Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?
¿O podrá comerse un manjar insípido, no sazonado con sal? ¿O habrá quien coma con gusto aquello que probado causa la muerte?
¿Comeráse lo desabrido sin sal? ¿ó habrá gusto en la clara del huevo?
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Can that which has no flavor be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Las cosas que antes hubiera yo rehusado tocar, ahora en la estrechez en que me hallo son mi alimento.
Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, por los dolores son mi comida.
The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
My soul refuses to touch them. They are as loathsome food to me.
¡Quién me diera que fuese otorgada mi petición, y me concediese Dios lo que tanto deseo!
¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que Dios me otorgase lo que espero;
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

¡Y que el que ha comenzado a herirme, acabe conmigo, deje caer su mano, y corte mi vida!
Y que pluguiera á Dios quebrantarme; que soltara su mano, y me deshiciera!
Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

Y mi consuelo sería que sin perdonarme, fuese afligiéndome con dolores, y que yo me opusiese a los decretos del Santo por esencia.
Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo.
Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Let it still be my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn’t spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
Porque, ¿cuáles son mis fuerzas para poder sobrellevar tantos males? ¿O cuándo tendrá fin mi padecer, para prometerme perseverar en la paciencia?
¿Cuál es mi fortaleza para esperar aún? ¿y cuál mi fin para dilatar mi vida?
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?
Que no es mi firmeza como la de las peñas, ni es de bronce mi carne.
¿Es mi fortaleza la de las piedras? ¿ó mi carne, es de acero?
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of bronze?
Mirad cómo yo por mí no puedo valerme, y cómo hasta los más allegados míos me han abandonado.
¿No me ayudo cuanto puedo, y el poder me falta del todo?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Isn’t it that I have no help in me, that wisdom is driven away from me?
Quien no tiene compasión de su amigo, abandona el santo temor de Dios.
El atribulado es consolado de su compañero: mas hase abandonado el temor del Omnipotente.
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
Mis hermanos han pasado de largo por delante de mí, como pasa un rápido torrente por las cañadas.
Mis hermanos han mentido cual arroyo: pasáronse como corrientes impetuosas,
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
Pero a veces los que temen la escarcha son abrumados de la nieve.
Que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve;
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.
Como los torrentes, al mismo tiempo que se desparramen se perderán; y como la nieve calentando el sol, se derretirán.
Que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y en calentándose, desaparecen de su lugar;
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
In the dry season, they vanish. When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
Tortuosas son las sendas por donde caminan; quedarán reducidos a la nada, y perecerán.
Apártanse de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y piérdense.
The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
The caravans that travel beside them turn away. They go up into the waste, and perish.
Contemplad las veredas de Tema, los caminos de Saba, y esperad un poquito.
Miraron los caminantes de Temán, los caminantes de Saba esperaron en ellas:
The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.

Se han confundido a vista de mi firme esperanza; se han llegado junto a mí, y quedan cubiertos de rubor.
Mas fueron avergonzados por su esperanza; porque vinieron hasta ellas, y halláronse confusos.
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
They were distressed because they were confident. They came there, and were confounded.
En efecto, acabáis ahora de llegar, y luego que veis mis males tembláis de miedo.
Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois vosotros: que habéis visto el tormento, y teméis.
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
For now you are nothing. You see a terror, and are afraid.
¿Acaso yo os he dicho: Traedme y dadme algo de vuestros bienes?
¿Os he dicho yo: Traedme, y pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda;
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Did I ever say, ‘Give to me’? or, ‘Offer a present for me from your substance’?
¿O bien, libradme del poder del enemigo, y sacadme de las manos de los poderosos?
Y libradme de la mano del opresor, y redimidme del poder de los violentos?
Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors’?
Enseñadme, que yo callaré; y si en algo he sido ignorante o he pecado, instruidme.
Enseñadme, y yo callaré: y hacedme entender en qué he errado.
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
“Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand my error.
¿Por qué razón, pues, habéis contradicho a las palabras de verdad que he hablado, siendo así que ninguno de vosotros puede acusarme de pecado?
¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras de rectitud! Mas ¿qué reprende el que reprende de vosotros?
How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Vuestros estudiados razonamientos sólo tiran a zaherirme, y no hacéis más que hablar al aire.
¿Pensáis censurar palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento?
Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?
Os arrojáis sobre un huérfano, y os esforzáis en acabar de perder a vuestro amigo.
También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y hacéis hoyo delante de vuestro amigo.
Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.
Como quiera, concluid el discurso comenzado, y prestadme después atención, y ved si digo mentira.
Ahora pues, si queréis, mirad en mí, y ved si miento delante de vosotros.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Now therefore be pleased to look at me, for surely I will not lie to your face.
Respondedme, os ruego, sin porfía, y pronunciad la sentencia conforme a justicia;
Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún á considerar mi justicia en esto.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.
que no habéis de hallar falsedad en mi lengua, ni de mi boca oiréis necedad alguna.
¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿no puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas?
Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
Is there injustice on my tongue? Can’t my taste discern mischievous things?
