La vida del hombre sobre la tierra es una perpetua guerra; y sus días son como los de un infeliz jornalero.
CIERTAMENTE tiempo limitado tiene el hombre sobre la tierra, y sus días son como los días del jornalero.
Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling?
“Isn’t a man forced to labor on earth? Aren’t his days like the days of a hired hand?
Como el siervo fatigado suspira por la sombra, y al modo que el jornalero aguarda con ansia el fin de su trabajo,
Como el siervo anhela la sombra, y como el jornalero espera el reposo de su trabajo:
As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work:

así he pasado yo meses sin sosiego, y estoy contando las noches trabajosas.
Así poseo yo meses de vanidad, y noches de trabajo me dieron por cuenta.
So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me.

When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.

Mi carne está cubierta de podredumbre y de costras de inmundo polvo; toda mi piel está seca y arrugada.

ni me verá más humana vista porque tú has echado sobre mí una terrible mirada y ya no puedo subsistir más.
Los ojos de los que me ven, no me verán más: tus ojos sobre mí, y dejaré de ser.

Como se disipa y desvanece una nube, así el que desciende al sepulcro no subirá,

Por esta causa mi alma quisiera más un patíbulo, y cualquier muerte para mis huesos.
Y así mi alma tuvo por mejor el ahogamiento, y quiso la muerte más que mis huesos.

Perdí las esperanzas de poder vivir más; ten lástima de mí, Señor, ya que mis días son nada.
Aburríme: no he de vivir yo para siempre; déjame, pues que mis días son vanidad.

Le visitas al rayar el alba, y de repente lo atribulas.

¿Hasta cuándo me has de negar tu compasión, sin permitirme respirar o tragar siquiera mi saliva?
¿Hasta cuándo no me dejarás, ni me soltarás hasta que trague mi saliva?
How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?
How long will you not look away from me, nor leave me alone until I swallow down my spittle?
Pequé, Señor; mas ¿qué haré yo para aplacarte, oh observador de los hombres? ¿Por qué me has puesto por blanco de tus enojos, tanto que ya me he hecho intolerable a mí mismo?
Pequé, ¿qué te haré, oh Guarda de los hombres? ¿por qué me has puesto contrario á ti, y que á mí mismo sea pesado?
I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?

¿Por qué no perdonas todavía mi pecado, y por qué no borras mi iniquidad? Mira que ya voy a dormir en el polvo del sepulcro, y cuando mañana me busques, ya no existiré en el mundo.
¿Y por qué no quitas mi rebelión, y perdonas mi iniquidad? porque ahora dormiré en el polvo, y si me buscares de mañana, ya no seré.
And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.
Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now will I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I will not be.”
