Y RESPONDIÓ Job, y dijo:
Then Job answered and said,

«Bien sé todo eso; nada nuevo me cuentas. Pero, ¿cómo puede un hombre ser genuinamente bueno a los ojos de Dios?
Ciertamente yo conozco que es así: ¿y cómo se justificará el hombre con Dios?
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
“Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God?
Si Dios quisiera disputar con él, ¿podría el hombre contestar siquiera una entre mil preguntas?
Si quisiere contender con él, no le podrá responder á una cosa de mil.
If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
If he is pleased to contend with him, he can’t answer him one time in a thousand.
Porque su sabiduría es profunda y vasto su poder. ¿Quién logró jamás vencerlo?
El es sabio de corazón, y poderoso en fortaleza: ¿quién se endureció contra él, y quedó en paz?
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?
Súbitamente mueve las montañas y las derriba en su furor. Sacude la tierra hasta sus cimientos.
Que arranca los montes con su furor, y no conocen quién los trastornó:
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
He removes the mountains, and they don’t know it, when he overturns them in his anger.

Que remueve la tierra de su lugar, y hace temblar sus columnas:
Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
He shakes the earth out of its place. Its pillars tremble.
El sol deja de salir y las estrellas de brillar si él lo ordena.
Que manda al sol, y no sale; y sella las estrellas:
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
He commands the sun and it doesn’t rise, and seals up the stars.
Él solo ha desplegado los cielos y medido a largos pasos los mares.
El que extiende solo los cielos, y anda sobre las alturas de la mar:
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
He alone stretches out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea.
Él hizo la Osa Mayor, el Orión, las Pléyades y las constelaciones del Zodiaco meridional.
El que hizo el Arcturo, y el Orión, y las Pléyadas, y los lugares secretos del mediodía:
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the rooms of the south.
Realiza inauditos e innumerables milagros.
El que hace cosas grandes é incomprensibles, y maravillosas, sin número.
Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
He does great things past finding out; yes, marvelous things without number.
Pasa delante de mí y no lo veo; transita, pero no lo veo.
He aquí que él pasará delante de mí, y yo no lo veré; y pasará, y no lo entenderé.
Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
Behold, he goes by me, and I don’t see him. He passes on also, but I don’t perceive him.
Cuando envía la muerte a llevarse a un hombre, ¿quién puede impedírselo? ¿Quién osa preguntarle: “qué estás haciendo”?
He aquí, arrebatará; ¿quién le hará restituir? ¿Quién le dirá, Qué haces?
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
Behold, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’
Y Dios no depone su ira. Ante él se doblega el orgullo del hombre.
Dios no tornará atrás su ira, y debajo de él se encorvan los que ayudan á los soberbios.
If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
“God will not withdraw his anger. The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.
»Y, ¿quién soy yo para que intente discutir con el Dios Todopoderoso, o siquiera razonar con él?
¿Cuánto menos le responderé yo, y hablaré con él palabras estudiadas?
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How much less will I answer him, and choose my words to argue with him?
Aunque yo fuera impecable, no diría ni una palabra; me limitaría a pedir clemencia.
Que aunque fuese yo justo, no responderé; antes habré de rogar á mi juez.
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
Though I were righteous, yet I wouldn’t answer him. I would make supplication to my judge.
Y aun si él diera respuesta a mis plegarias, apenas podría creer que hubiera escuchado mi clamor.
Que si yo le invocase, y él me respondiese, aun no creeré que haya escuchado mi voz.
If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
If I had called, and he had answered me, yet I wouldn’t believe that he listened to my voice.
Pues él es quien destruye, quien multiplica mis heridas sin causa alguna.
Porque me ha quebrado con tempestad, y ha aumentado mis heridas sin causa.
For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
For he breaks me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.
No me concede respiro, sino me colma de amargos sufrimientos.
No me ha concedido que tome mi aliento; mas hame hartado de amarguras.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
He will not allow me to catch my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
Sólo él es fuerte y justo. ¿Quién le pedirá cuentas?
Si habláremos de su potencia, fuerte por cierto es; si de juicio, ¿quién me emplazará?
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
If it is a matter of strength, behold, he is mighty! If of justice, ‘Who,’ says he, ‘will summon me?’
Y yo, ¿soy acaso justo? Mi propia boca lo niega. Aunque creyera que soy perfecto, Dios me declararía convicto de maldad.
Si yo me justificare, me condenará mi boca; si me dijere perfecto, esto me hará inicuo.
If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am blameless, it will prove me perverse.
»Y aunque fuera del todo inocente, no me atrevería ni a pensarlo. ¡Detesto lo que soy!
Bien que yo fuese íntegro, no conozco mi alma: reprocharé mi vida.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
I am blameless. I don’t respect myself. I despise my life.
Inocente o culpable, para él da lo mismo, pues él destruye a uno y a otro.
Una cosa resta que yo diga: Al perfecto y al impío él los consume.
This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
“It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.
Se ríe cuando la calamidad azota al inocente.
Si azote mata de presto, ríese de la prueba de los inocentes.
If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
If the scourge kills suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent.
La tierra está en manos de los malvados; Dios venda los ojos de los jueces y los deja proceder injustamente. Si no es él, ¿quién es entonces?
La tierra es entregada en manos de los impíos, y él cubre el rostro de sus jueces. Si no es él, ¿quién es? ¿dónde está?
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges. If not he, then who is it?
»Veloz se me va la vida cargada de tragedia.
Mis días han sido más ligeros que un correo; huyeron, y no vieron el bien.
Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
“Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away. They see no good.
Mis años se esfuman como naves fugaces, como águila que se precipita sobre su presa.
Pasaron cual navíos veloces: como el águila que se arroja á la comida.
They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
They have passed away as the swift ships, as the eagle that swoops on the prey.
Si yo resolviera olvidarme de mis quejas contra Dios, dar fin a mi tristeza y alegrarme,
Si digo: Olvidaré mi queja, dejaré mi aburrimiento, y esforzaréme:
If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up,’
él entonces volcaría aun mayores penas sobre mí. ¡Porque yo sé que no me tienen por inocente, oh Dios,
Contúrbanme todos mis trabajos; sé que no me darás por libre.
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
I am afraid of all my sorrows. I know that you will not hold me innocent.
sino que me condenan! Entonces, ¿para qué esforzarme?
Yo soy impío, ¿para qué trabajaré en vano?
If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
I will be condemned. Why then do I labor in vain?
Aunque me lavara con el agua más pura y enjuagara mis manos con lejía para dejarlas sin mancha alguna,
Aunque me lave con aguas de nieve, y limpie mis manos con la misma limpieza,
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye,
aun así me hundirías en el albañal y el lodo; y hasta mi ropa sería menos inmunda de lo que tú me consideras.
Aun me hundirás en el hoyo, y mis propios vestidos me abominarán.
Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes will abhor me.
»Y no puedo defenderme, pues Dios no es simple hombre como yo. Si lo fuera, podríamos discutir esto imparcialmente; pero no hay árbitro entre nosotros, no hay componedor, no hay mediador que nos concilie.
Porque no es hombre como yo, para que yo le responda, y vengamos juntamente á juicio.
For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.

No hay entre nosotros árbitro que ponga su mano sobre nosotros ambos.
Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

¡Ay! Que deje de azotarme para que ya no tenga yo que vivir bajo el terror de su castigo.
Quite de sobre mí su vara, y su terror no me espante.
Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
Let him take his rod away from me. Let his terror not make me afraid;
Entonces podría hablarle sin temor, y decirle que yo no me considero culpable.
Entonces hablaré, y no le temeré: porque así no estoy en mí mismo.
Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
