“Eu sei disso muito bem; não é novidade. Mas pode um mortal ser considerado justo diante de Deus?
Ciertamente yo conozco que es así: ¿y cómo se justificará el hombre con Dios?
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
“Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God?
Se Deus quisesse pedir contas ao homem, seria possível responder sequer uma das mil perguntas que ele fizesse?
Si quisiere contender con él, no le podrá responder á una cosa de mil.
If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
If he is pleased to contend with him, he can’t answer him one time in a thousand.
Deus é muito sábio e poderoso. Quem pode desafiá-lo e sair vencedor?
El es sabio de corazón, y poderoso en fortaleza: ¿quién se endureció contra él, y quedó en paz?
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?
“Na sua ira, ele é capaz de mover e destruir montanhas tão depressa que nem se pode ver.
Que arranca los montes con su furor, y no conocen quién los trastornó:
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
He removes the mountains, and they don’t know it, when he overturns them in his anger.
Ele pode sacudir os alicerces da terra e tirá-la do seu lugar.
Que remueve la tierra de su lugar, y hace temblar sus columnas:
Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
He shakes the earth out of its place. Its pillars tremble.
Se ele mandar que o sol não nasça, ele não nascerá; e ele pode apagar o brilho das estrelas.
Que manda al sol, y no sale; y sella las estrellas:
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
He commands the sun and it doesn’t rise, and seals up the stars.
Sozinho, ele formou os céus! Ele anda sobre as grandes ondas do mar.
El que extiende solo los cielos, y anda sobre las alturas de la mar:
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
He alone stretches out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea.
Ele criou as grandes estrelas e os grupos de estrelas como a Ursa Maior, o Órion, as Plêiades e as constelações que brilham nos céus do sul.
El que hizo el Arcturo, y el Orión, y las Pléyadas, y los lugares secretos del mediodía:
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the rooms of the south.
Ele realiza grandes milagres, tantos que é impossível contar e ver!
El que hace cosas grandes é incomprensibles, y maravillosas, sin número.
Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
He does great things past finding out; yes, marvelous things without number.
Ele está sempre perto de mim, mas não posso vê-lo; vai sempre adiante em meu caminho, mas não o percebo.
He aquí que él pasará delante de mí, y yo no lo veré; y pasará, y no lo entenderé.
Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
Behold, he goes by me, and I don’t see him. He passes on also, but I don’t perceive him.
Quando ele decide ficar com alguma coisa, quem é capaz de impedi-lo? Quem pode dizer-lhe: ‘O que o Senhor está fazendo?’
He aquí, arrebatará; ¿quién le hará restituir? ¿Quién le dirá, Qué haces?
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
Behold, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’
Deus não deixa de cumprir o castigo que sua ira exige. Ele esmaga os príncipes de nações poderosas, como o Egito.
Dios no tornará atrás su ira, y debajo de él se encorvan los que ayudan á los soberbios.
If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
“God will not withdraw his anger. The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.
Quem sou eu, pois, para pedir satisfações a ele? Como achar palavras para argumentar?
¿Cuánto menos le responderé yo, y hablaré con él palabras estudiadas?
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How much less will I answer him, and choose my words to argue with him?
Mesmo que eu fosse inocente, não discutiria com ele; pelo contrário, pediria a sua misericórdia, pois ele é o meu Juiz.
Que aunque fuese yo justo, no responderé; antes habré de rogar á mi juez.
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
Though I were righteous, yet I wouldn’t answer him. I would make supplication to my judge.
E mesmo se minhas orações fossem respondidas, custaria a crer que ele tivesse dado ouvidos à minha voz.
Que si yo le invocase, y él me respondiese, aun no creeré que haya escuchado mi voz.
If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
If I had called, and he had answered me, yet I wouldn’t believe that he listened to my voice.
Ele me esmagaria como uma tempestade violenta e, sem motivo, ele aumentaria as minhas feridas.
Porque me ha quebrado con tempestad, y ha aumentado mis heridas sin causa.
For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
For he breaks me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.
Ele nem me deixaria recuperar o fôlego, mas encheria a minha vida de amargura.
No me ha concedido que tome mi aliento; mas hame hartado de amarguras.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
He will not allow me to catch my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
Farei uso da força? Ele é mais forte. Chamarei Deus ao tribunal? Quem o intimaria a comparecer?
Si habláremos de su potencia, fuerte por cierto es; si de juicio, ¿quién me emplazará?
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
If it is a matter of strength, behold, he is mighty! If of justice, ‘Who,’ says he, ‘will summon me?’
E eu? Por acaso sou justo? Minha boca me condenaria! E mesmo que aos olhos dos homens eu fosse considerado justo, Deus me declararia culpado.
Si yo me justificare, me condenará mi boca; si me dijere perfecto, esto me hará inicuo.
If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am blameless, it will prove me perverse.
“Eu tenho certeza de estar inocente diante de Deus, mas não me importo com isso; minha vida não vale nada.
Bien que yo fuese íntegro, no conozco mi alma: reprocharé mi vida.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
I am blameless. I don’t respect myself. I despise my life.
Já não faz diferença; por isso digo: Deus castiga tanto o justo como o pecador.
Una cosa resta que yo diga: Al perfecto y al impío él los consume.
This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
“It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.
Quando uma desgraça mata de repente, ele zomba do desespero do inocente.
Si azote mata de presto, ríese de la prueba de los inocentes.
If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
If the scourge kills suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent.
Este mundo é dominado por homens perversos, e Deus cobre os olhos dos juízes. Se não é ele quem causa todo esse mal, quem é, afinal?
La tierra es entregada en manos de los impíos, y él cubre el rostro de sus jueces. Si no es él, ¿quién es? ¿dónde está?
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges. If not he, then who is it?
“Meus dias correm mais depressa do que um atleta, eles fogem sem um lampejo de alegria.
Mis días han sido más ligeros que un correo; huyeron, y no vieron el bien.
Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
“Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away. They see no good.
Minha vida passa depressa como um barco veloz, como a águia que se lança sobre sua vítima.
Pasaron cual navíos veloces: como el águila que se arroja á la comida.
They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
They have passed away as the swift ships, as the eagle that swoops on the prey.
Eu posso dizer a mim mesmo: Esse meu sofrimento não existe; não vou mais reclamar contra Deus, vou esquecer minha tristeza e sorrir.
Si digo: Olvidaré mi queja, dejaré mi aburrimiento, y esforzaréme:
If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up,’
De nada adianta, porque me apavoro com as minhas dores, pois sei que não me considerará inocente.
Contúrbanme todos mis trabajos; sé que no me darás por libre.
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
I am afraid of all my sorrows. I know that you will not hold me innocent.
E, se ele já me considerou culpado, para que, então, continuar lutando?
Yo soy impío, ¿para qué trabajaré en vano?
If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
I will be condemned. Why then do I labor in vain?
Mesmo que eu me lave com a água mais pura e limpe minhas mãos com soda,
Aunque me lave con aguas de nieve, y limpie mis manos con la misma limpieza,
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye,
eu sei que o Senhor me afundaria num poço de lodo, ó Deus, E, perto de mim, até as minhas roupas sujas pareceriam limpas.
Aun me hundirás en el hoyo, y mis propios vestidos me abominarán.
Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes will abhor me.
“Deus não é homem, como eu. Se fosse, poderíamos ir ao tribunal e discutir nosso caso perante um juiz.
Porque no es hombre como yo, para que yo le responda, y vengamos juntamente á juicio.
For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.
Mas não há um juiz capaz de decidir nossas questões com Deus e nos deixar em paz com ele.
No hay entre nosotros árbitro que ponga su mano sobre nosotros ambos.
Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both.
Ah, quem dera ele parasse de me castigar! Assim eu não viveria dominado pelo medo.
Quite de sobre mí su vara, y su terror no me espante.
Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
Let him take his rod away from me. Let his terror not make me afraid;
Então poderia falar diretamente com ele sem medo, e dizer que não sou culpado”.
Entonces hablaré, y no le temeré: porque así no estoy en mí mismo.
Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
