El Señor envió este mensaje a Jonás, hijo de Amitay:
Y FUÉ palabra de Jehová á Jonás, hijo de Amittai, diciendo:
Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

«Ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive y anúnciale que la voy a destruir, porque su maldad ha quedado completamente evidente ante mí».
Levántate, y ve á Nínive, ciudad grande, y pregona contra ella; porque su maldad ha subido delante de mí.
Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”
Pero Jonás no quiso ir. Al contrario, quiso huir de la presencia del Señor; por eso, fue hacia la costa, al puerto de Jope. Allí encontró un barco que iba hacia Tarsis. Pagó su pasaje y subió al barco para irse bien lejos de la presencia del Señor.
Y Jonás se levantó para huir de la presencia de Jehová á Tarsis, y descendió á Joppe; y halló un navío que partía para Tarsis; y pagando su pasaje entró en él, para irse con ellos á Tarsis de delante de Jehová.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

El barco navegaba normalmente, cuando de repente el Señor envió un fuerte viento sobre el mar, haciendo que una gran tormenta amenazara con hacer naufragar el barco.
Mas Jehová hizo levantar un gran viento en la mar, é hízose una tan gran tempestad en la mar, que pensóse se rompería la nave.
But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
Temerosos de perder la vida, los desesperados marineros gritaban pidiendo ayuda a sus dioses, y arrojaban la carga al mar para que la nave quedara más liviana. Mientras tanto, Jonás dormía profundamente en el fondo del barco.
Y los marineros tuvieron miedo, y cada uno llamaba á su dios: y echaron á la mar los enseres que había en la nave, para descargarla de ellos. Jonás empero se había bajado á los lados del buque, y se había echado á dormir.
Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
El capitán bajó a buscarlo y, cuando lo encontró, le gritó: ―¿Qué haces aquí dormido? ¡No es tiempo de dormir! ¡Levántate y clama a tu Dios! ¡Quizás tenga misericordia de nosotros y nos salve!
Y el maestre de la nave se llegó á él, y le dijo: ¿Qué tienes, dormilón? Levántate, y clama á tu Dios; quizá él tendrá compasión de nosotros, y no pereceremos.
So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
Entonces los marineros decidieron echar suertes para descubrir quién era el culpable de que les estuviera pasando esa desgracia. ¡Y la mala suerte señaló a Jonás!
Y dijeron cada uno á su compañero: Venid, y echemos suertes, para saber por quién nos ha venido este mal. Y echaron suertes, y la suerte cayó sobre Jonás.
And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
―¿Qué hiciste para que nos viniera este mal? ¿Quién eres? ¿En qué trabajas? ¿De qué nacionalidad eres? ¿De qué país vienes? —le preguntaron.
Entonces le dijeron ellos: Decláranos ahora por qué nos ha venido este mal. ¿Qué oficio tienes, y de dónde vienes? ¿cuál es tu tierra, y de qué pueblo eres?
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”
―Soy hebreo, soy devoto del Señor, el Dios del cielo, quien hizo el mar y la tierra. Lo que está sucediendo es por mi culpa, pues trato de huir de la presencia de Dios —les respondió. Los hombres se asustaron mucho cuando oyeron esto, y le preguntaron: ―¿Por qué lo hiciste?
Y él les respondió: Hebreo soy, y temo á Jehová, Dios de los cielos, que hizo la mar y la tierra.
And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

Y aquellos hombres temieron sobremanera, y dijéronle: ¿Por qué has hecho esto? Porque ellos entendieron que huía de delante de Jehová, porque se lo había declarado.
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Dinos, ¿qué debemos hacer contigo para detener la tormenta? Porque el mar se embravecía más y más.
Y dijéronle: ¿Qué te haremos, para que la mar se nos quiete? porque la mar iba á más, y se embravecía.
Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.
―Arrójenme al mar —les dijo— y el mar se aquietará nuevamente. Porque yo sé que esta tormenta ha venido por mi culpa.
El les respondió: Tomadme, y echadme á la mar, y la mar se os quietará: porque yo sé que por mí ha venido esta grande tempestad sobre vosotros.
And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”
Los marineros trataron de hacer volver la nave a tierra, remando arduamente, pero fue imposible. El mar estaba demasiado embravecido y no lo podían vencer.
Y aquellos hombres trabajaron por tornar la nave á tierra; mas no pudieron, porque la mar iba á más, y se embravecía sobre ellos.
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

Entonces clamaron al Señor, el Dios de Jonás: «Señor, no nos hagas morir por el pecado de este hombre, y no nos hagas responsables de su muerte, porque no ha sido culpa nuestra lo ocurrido; tú enviaste esta tempestad en su contra, porque tú tienes buenas razones para ello».
Entonces clamaron á Jehová, y dijeron: Rogámoste ahora, Jehová, que no perezcamos nosotros por la vida de aqueste hombre, ni pongas sobre nosotros la sangre inocente: porque tú, Jehová, has hecho como has querido.
Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
Therefore they cried to the LORD, and said, “We beg you, LORD, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, LORD, have done as it pleased you.”
En seguida tomaron a Jonás y lo arrojaron por la borda al mar enfurecido, y ¡la tempestad se calmó de inmediato!
Y tomaron á Jonás, y echáronlo á la mar; y la mar se quietó de su furia.
So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
Aquellos hombres sintieron gran temor del Señor, le ofrecieron sacrificios y prometieron siempre rendirle homenaje.
Y temieron aquellos hombres á Jehová con gran temor; y ofrecieron sacrificio á Jehová, y prometieron votos.
Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

El Señor había planeado que un gran pez se tragara a Jonás. Y Jonás estuvo dentro del pez durante tres días y tres noches.

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
