Entonces el Señor le habló de nuevo a Jonás:
Y FUÉ palabra de Jehová segunda vez á Jonás, diciendo:

«Ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive y comunícales el mensaje que te voy a dar».
Levántate, y ve á Nínive, aquella gran ciudad, y publica en ella el pregón que yo te diré.
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”
En esta ocasión Jonás obedeció y fue a Nínive. Nínive era una ciudad muy grande, tan grande era que se necesitaban tres días para recorrerla.
Y levantóse Jonás, y fué á Nínive, conforme á la palabra de Jehová. Y era Nínive ciudad sobremanera grande, de tres días de camino.

Cuando entró Jonás el primer día a la ciudad y comenzó a predicar, el pueblo se arrepintió de sus malas obras. Jonás pregonaba con voz potente el mensaje de Dios: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida!». Los ninivitas creyeron el mensaje que Dios les enviaba y decidieron ayunar. Desde el más encumbrado hasta el más pobre se vistieron con ropas de luto, es decir, con ropa áspera y tosca, en señal de arrepentimiento.
Y comenzó Jonás á entrar por la ciudad, camino de un día, y pregonaba diciendo: De aquí á cuarenta días Nínive será destruída.

Cuando el rey de Nínive supo lo que Jonás estaba predicando, bajó del trono, se quitó las ropas reales, se vistió también con ropa áspera y se sentó sobre ceniza.
Y llegó el negocio hasta el rey de Nínive, y levantóse de su silla, y echó de sí su vestido, y cubrióse de saco, y se sentó sobre ceniza.

Luego el rey y sus nobles enviaron este mensaje a toda la ciudad: «Que nadie, incluidos los animales, coma nada ni beba agua.
E hizo pregonar y anunciar en Nínive, por mandado del rey y de sus grandes, diciendo: Hombres y animales, bueyes y ovejas, no gusten cosa alguna, no se les dé alimento, ni beban agua:

Todos deben vestirse con ropas ásperas, de luto, clamar de todo corazón a Dios y dejar su mal comportamiento, la violencia y el robo.
Y que se cubran de saco los hombres y los animales, y clamen á Dios fuertemente: y conviértase cada uno de su mal camino, de la rapiña que está en sus manos.
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

Quizás Dios tenga misericordia, deje de estar enojado con nosotros y nos permita seguir viviendo».
¿Quién sabe si se volverá y arrepentirá Dios, y se apartará del furor de su ira, y no pereceremos?
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

Cuando Dios vio que los ninivitas estaban dispuestos a dejar su mala conducta, decidió no destruirlos como había planeado.
Y vió Dios lo que hicieron, que se convirtieron de su mal camino: y arrepintióse del mal que había dicho les había de hacer, y no lo hizo.
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
