Yo soy un hombre que ha visto lo que se sufre cuando el Señor castiga las maldades.

Él me hizo caminar en tinieblas, sin nada de luz.
Guióme y llevóme en tinieblas, mas no en luz.

Se ha vuelto contra mí, de día y de noche me castiga sin parar.
Ciertamente contra mí volvió y revolvió su mano todo el día.
Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

Me ha hecho sufrir tanto que hasta me veo avejentado y estoy lleno de tristeza.
Hizo envejecer mi carne y mi piel; quebrantó mis huesos.
My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

Él ha procurado que sólo me acontezcan cosas malas; todo a mi alrededor es triste y penoso.
Edificó contra mí, y cercóme de tósigo y de trabajo.
He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
He has built against me, and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
Me ha hecho vivir en las tinieblas por largo tiempo, como si ya estuviera muerto.
Asentóme en oscuridades, como los ya muertos de mucho tiempo.
He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
He has made me dwell in dark places, as those who have been long dead.
Me ha maltratado por todos lados, casi no tengo ni respiro; estoy tan apesadumbrado que parece que estuviera sujetado con cadenas pesadas.
Cercóme por todos lados, y no puedo salir; agravó mis grillos.
He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
He has walled me about, so that I can’t go out. He has made my chain heavy.
¡Por más que grite y clame no me pone nada de atención!
Aun cuando clamé y dí voces, cerro los oídos á mi oración.
Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

¡Me ha cerrado el camino de modo que no veo nada claro en mi futuro! ¡Todos mis proyectos los ha estorbado y ya no sé qué hacer!
Cercó mis caminos con piedra tajada, torció mis senderos.
He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

Me acecha como un oso, como un león, listo para atacarme.
Como oso que acecha fué para mí, como león en escondrijos.
He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

Me ha arrastrado a un lado del camino, me ha despedazado con sus garras, me ha dejado indefenso y abandonado a mi suerte.
Torció mis caminos, y depedazóme; tornóme asolado.
He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.

Como si fuera un arquero enemigo, me tomó de blanco para lanzarme sus flechas.
Su arco entesó, y púsome como blanco á la saeta.
He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

¡Y claro que me ha clavado sus flechas en todo mi cuerpo!
Hizo entrar en mis riñones las saetas de su aljaba.
He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
He has caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my kidneys.
Mi propia gente se burla de mí, no dejan de molestarme con sus burlas y rechiflas en ningún momento.
Fuí escarnio á todo mi pueblo, canción de ellos todos los días.
I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
I have become a derision to all my people, and their song all day long.
El Señor ha llenado mi vida de tristeza y vivo amargado y dolorido todo el tiempo.
Hartóme de amarguras, embriagóme de ajenjos.
He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
He has filled me with bitterness. He has stuffed me with wormwood.
Me ha hecho moler grava con mis dientes, me ha revolcado en el polvo.
Quebróme los dientes con cascajo, cubrióme de ceniza.
He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.

¡Me has quitado la paz! ¡Ya ni siquiera me preocupo por portarme bien!
Y mi alma se alejó de la paz, olvidéme del bien.
And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.
You have removed my soul far away from peace. I forgot prosperity.
Y dije: «Ya no tengo ganas de hacer nada y hasta estoy perdiendo la fe en el Señor».
Y dije: Pereció mi fortaleza, y mi esperanza de Jehová.
And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD:
I said, “My strength has perished, along with my expectation from the LORD.”
¡Oh, acuérdate de que ando sin saber adonde ir y afligido, con mucho dolor!
Acuérdate de mi aflicción y de mi abatimiento, del ajenjo y de la hiel.
Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the bitterness.
Porque nunca podré olvidar este tiempo tan terrible, y por eso estoy desanimado.
Tendrálo aún en memoria mi alma, porque en mí está humillada.
My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me.
Pero hay algo que quiero recordar y en ello poner mi esperanza:
Esto reduciré á mi corazón, por lo cual esperaré.

¡en que el gran amor del Señor no tiene fin, pues sólo ha sido por su misericordia que nos ha guardado de la destrucción completa!
Es por la misericordia de Jehová que no somos consumidos, porque nunca decayeron sus misericordias.
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail.
El Señor es digno de toda confianza; sus muestras de bondad las recibimos cada día.
Nuevas son cada mañana; grande es tu fidelidad.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

El Señor es todo para mí, por lo tanto en él confiaré siempre.
Mi parte es Jehová, dijo mi alma; por tanto en él esperaré.
The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

El Señor es maravillosamente bueno con aquellos quienes en él confían, con aquellos que buscan seguir sus instrucciones.
Bueno es Jehová á los que en él esperan, al alma que le buscare.
The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
Es bueno esperar en confiado silencio la salvación del Señor.
Bueno es esperar callando en la salud de Jehová.
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

Es bueno ser fiel al Señor desde la juventud.
Bueno es al hombre, si llevare el yugo desde su mocedad.

Déjenla estar sola y en silencio, cuando el Señor le quiere mostrar algo.
Sentaráse solo, y callará, porque lo llevó sobre sí.
He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.
Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he has laid it on him.
Que incline su rostro hasta el suelo en señal de humildad, tal vez aún haya esperanza de algún cambio.
Pondrá su boca en el polvo, por si quizá hay esperanza.
He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
Let him put his mouth in the dust, if it is so that there may be hope.
Que ponga su mejilla a quienes lo hieren, y que soporte sus insultos,
Dará la mejilla al que le hiriere; hartaráse de afrenta.
He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.
Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him. Let him be filled full of reproach.
porque el Señor no la abandonará para siempre.

Aunque el Señor la aflija, también le mostrará compasión, por la grandeza de su bondad.
Antes si afligiere, también se compadecerá según la multitud de sus misericordias.
But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

¡Nadie crea que al Señor le agrada afligir al ser humano ni causarle dolor!
Porque no aflige ni congoja de su corazón á los hijos de los hombres.

El pisotear a los prisioneros de su pueblo,
Desmenuzar bajo de sus pies todos los encarcelados de la tierra,
To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,

el negar al ser humano sus derechos en la presencia de Dios,
Hacer apartar el derecho del hombre ante la presencia del Altísimo,
To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,
to turn away the right of a man before the face of the Most High,
el no hacer justicia, ¡son cosas que el Señor para nada aprueba!
Trastornar al hombre en su causa, el Señor no lo sabe.
To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.
to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord doesn’t approve.
¿Puede acaso suceder algo sin el permiso de Dios?
¿Quién será aquel que diga, que vino algo que el Señor no mandó?
Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord doesn’t command it?
¿Acaso no viene de Dios tanto lo bueno como lo malo?
¿De la boca del Altísimo no saldrá malo y bueno?
Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
Doesn’t evil and good come out of the mouth of the Most High?
¿Por qué, pues, nosotros, simples seres humanos, nos quejamos cuando nos castigan por nuestros pecados?
¿Por qué murmura el hombre viviente, el hombre en su pecado?
Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
Why should a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
Examinemos nuestra conducta y volvamos a ser fieles al Señor otra vez.
Escudriñemos nuestros caminos, y busquemos, y volvámonos á Jehová.
Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

Alcemos nuestros corazones y manos al Dios del cielo.
Levantemos nuestros corazones con las manos á Dios en los cielos.
Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

¡Hemos actuado muy mal, hemos sido muy tercos, pero tú no has perdonado!
Nosotros nos hemos rebelado, y fuimos desleales; tú no perdonaste.
We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.

Nos has derribado, Señor, en tu gran cólera, y nos has matado, no quisiste perdonarnos.
Desplegaste la ira, y nos perseguiste; mataste, no perdonaste.
Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
“You have covered us with anger and pursued us. You have killed. You have not pitied.
Te has cubierto como con una espesa nube para que nuestras oraciones no lleguen hasta ti.
Te cubriste de nube, porque no pasase la oración nuestra.
Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.
Nos has tratado como si fuéramos basura delante de las naciones.
Raedura y abominación nos tornaste en medio de los pueblos.
Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.
You have made us an off-scouring and refuse in the middle of the peoples.
Todos nuestros enemigos han hablado en contra nuestra.
Todos nuestros enemigos abrieron sobre nosotros su boca.
All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
“All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.
Estamos llenos de temor pues estamos atrapados, desolados y destruidos.
Temor y lazo fué para nosotros, asolamiento y quebrantamiento.
Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
Terror and the pit have come on us, devastation and destruction.”
Me la paso llorando al ver la destrucción de mi pueblo.
Ríos de aguas echan mis ojos, por el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo.
Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Lágrimas fluyen de mis ojos sin descanso, al darme cuenta que no hay escape para mi pueblo.
Mis ojos destilan, y no cesan, porque no hay alivio,
Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,
My eye pours down and doesn’t cease, without any intermission,
¡Oh, que el Señor mire desde el cielo y responda a mi ruego!
Hasta que Jehová mire y vea desde los cielos.
Till the LORD look down, and behold from heaven.

Estoy lleno de dolor al ver todo lo que les está pasando a las mujeres de Jerusalén.
Mis ojos contristaron mi alma, por todas las hijas de mi ciudad.
Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.
Mis enemigos, a quienes nunca hice mal, me cazaron como a un ave.
Mis enemigos me dieron caza como á ave, sin por qué.
Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.
They have chased me relentlessly like a bird, those who are my enemies without cause.
Me metieron en un pozo y lo cubrieron con una roca.
Ataron mi vida en mazmorra, pusieron piedra sobre mí.
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.

El agua me cubría por completo. Pensé: «Este es el fin».
Aguas de avenida vinieron sobre mi cabeza; yo dije: Muerto soy.
Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.

¡Entonces yo me dirigí a ti en oración, Señor, desde la profundidad del pozo,
Invoqué tu nombre, oh Jehová, desde la cárcel profunda.
I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon.
I called on your name, LORD, out of the lowest dungeon.
y atendiste mi petición! ¡Escuchaste mis oraciones, fuiste sensible a mi llanto!
Oiste mi voz; no escondas tu oído á mi clamor, para mi respiro.
Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
You heard my voice: “Don’t hide your ear from my sighing, and my cry.”
Sí, tú acudiste ante mi oración desesperada y me dijiste: «No tengas miedo».
Acercástete el día que te invoqué: dijiste: No temas.
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
You came near in the day that I called on you. You said, “Don’t be afraid.”
¡Oh Señor, tú eres mi defensor! ¡Defendiste mi causa, pues tú has librado mi vida de la muerte!
Abogaste, Señor, la causa de mi alma; redimiste mi vida.
O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

Tú has visto el mal que me han hecho, Señor, sé mi juez y hazme justicia.

Has visto con que violencia me persiguen mis enemigos.

Señor, tú has escuchado los insultos y burlas que dirigen contra mí todo el día,
Tú has oído el oprobio de ellos, oh Jehová, todas sus maquinaciones contra mí;

You have heard their reproach, LORD, and all their plans against me,
y cómo me agreden de todas formas; entonan canciones burlescas en mi contra.
Los dichos de los que contra mí se levantaron, y su designio contra mí todo el día.
The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

Mira cómo se ríen y cantan alegremente contra mí esos refranes malintencionados.
Su sentarse, y su levantarse mira: yo soy su canción.
Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.

¡Oh Señor, dales su merecido por todo el mal que me han hecho!
Dales el pago, oh Jehová, según la obra de sus manos.
Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.

¡Permite que caigan en sus propias maldades, Señor!
Dales ansia de corazón, tu maldición á ellos.
Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.

¡Persíguelos, Señor, en tu enojo y haz que caigan golpeados por la mala suerte!
Persíguelos en tu furor, y quebrántalos de debajo de los cielos, oh Jehová.
Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
