1En el año quince del reinado de Tiberio César, siendo Poncio Pilato gobernador de Judea, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea, y su hermano Felipe tetrarca de la región de Iturea y Traconite, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilinia,
2durante el sumo sacerdocio de Anás y Caifás, vino la palabra de Dios a Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.
3Él fue por toda la región alrededor del Jordán, predicando el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de los pecados.
4Como está escrito en el libro de las palabras del profeta Isaías “La voz de uno que clama en el desierto, ‘'Preparen el camino del Señor’. Enderecen sus caminos.
5Todo valle se llenará. Toda montaña y colina será rebajada. Lo torcido se volverá recto, y los caminos ásperos allanados.
6Toda carne verá la salvación de Dios’”.
7Por eso dijo a las multitudes que salían para ser bautizadas por él: “¡Generación de víboras! ¿Quién les advirtió que huyan de la ira que ha de venir?
8Produzcan, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no empiecen a decir entre ustedes: “Tenemos a Abraham por padre”, porque les digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham de estas piedras.
9También ahora el hacha está a la raíz de los árboles. Por eso, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y arrojado al fuego.”
10Las multitudes le preguntaron: “¿Qué debemos hacer entonces?”
11Les respondió: “El que tenga dos túnicas, que se las dé al que no tiene. El que tenga comida, que haga lo mismo”.
12También los recaudadores de impuestos vinieron a bautizarse, y le dijeron: “Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer?”
13Les dijo: “No colecten más de lo que les corresponde”.
14Los soldados también le preguntaron: “¿Y nosotros? ¿Qué debemos hacer?” Les dijo: “No extorsionen a nadie con violencia, ni acusen a nadie injustamente. Conténtense con su salario”.
15Mientras la gente estaba a la expectativa, y todos los hombres pensaban en sus corazones acerca de Juan, si acaso él sería el Cristo,
16Juan les respondió a todos: “Yo, a la verdad, los bautizo con agua, pero viene el que es más poderoso que yo, la correa de cuyas sandalias no soy digno de desatar. Él los bautizará en el Espíritu Santo y en el fuego.
17Tiene en la mano su aventador, y limpiará a fondo su era, y recogerá el trigo en su granero; pero quemará la paja con fuego inextinguible.”
18Entonces, con otras muchas exhortaciones, anunciaba al pueblo la buena nueva,
19pero Herodes el tetrarca, al ser reprendido por él por Herodías, la mujer de su hermano, y por todas las cosas malas que Herodes había hecho,
20añadió a todas ellas la de encerrar a Juan en la cárcel.
21Cuando todo el pueblo se bautizaba, Jesús también se había bautizado y estaba orando. El cielo se abrió,
22y el Espíritu Santo descendió en forma corporal como una paloma sobre él; y una voz salió del cielo, diciendo: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado. En ti me complazco”.
23El mismo Jesús, cuando comenzó a enseñar, tenía unos treinta años, siendo hijo (como se suponía) de José, hijo de Eli,
24hijo de Matat, hijo de Leví, hijo de Melqui, hijo de Jana, hijo de José,
25hijo de Matatías, hijo de Amós, hijo de Nahúm, hijo de Esli, hijo de Nagai,
26hijo de Maat, hijo de Matatías, hijo de Semeí hijo de José, hijo de Judá,

2Siendo sumos sacerdotes Anás y Caifás, vino palabra del Señor sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.
3Y él vino por toda la tierra al rededor del Jordán predicando el bautismo del arrepentimiento para la remisión de pecados;
4Como está escrito en el libro de las palabras del profeta Isaías que dice: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Aparejad el camino del Señor, haced derechas sus sendas.
5Todo valle se henchirá, y bajaráse todo monte y collado; y los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, y los caminos ásperos allanados;
6Y verá toda carne la salvación de Dios.
7Y decía á las gentes que salían para ser bautizadas de él: ¡Oh generación de víboras, quién os enseñó á huir de la ira que vendrá?
8Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comencéis á decir en vosotros mismos: Tenemos á Abraham por padre: porque os digo que puede Dios, aun de estas piedras, levantar hijos á Abraham.
9Y ya también el hacha está puesta á la raíz de los árboles: todo árbol pues que no hace buen fruto, es cortado, y echado en el fuego.
10Y las gentes le preguntaban, diciendo: ¿Pues qué haremos?
11Y respondiendo, les dijo: El que tiene dos túnicas, dé al que no tiene; y el que tiene qué comer, haga lo mismo.
12Y vinieron también publicanos para ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿qué haremos?
13Y él les dijo: No exijáis más de lo que os está ordenado.
14Y le preguntaron también los soldados, diciendo: Y nosotros, ¿qué haremos? Y les dice: No hagáis extorsión á nadie, ni calumniéis; y contentaos con vuestras pagas.
15Y estando el pueblo esperando, y pensando todos de Juan en sus corazones, si él fuese el Cristo,
16Respondió Juan, diciendo á todos: Yo, á la verdad, os bautizo en agua; mas viene quien es más poderoso que yo, de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de sus zapatos: él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego;
17Cuyo bieldo está en su mano, y limpiará su era, y juntará el trigo en su alfolí, y la paja quemará en fuego que nunca se apagará.
18Y amonestando, otras muchas cosas también anunciaba al pueblo.
19Entonces Herodes el tetrarca, siendo reprendido por él á causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano, y de todas las maldades que había hecho Herodes,
20Añadió también esto sobre todo, que encerró á Juan en la cárcel.
21Y aconteció que, como todo el pueblo se bautizaba, también Jesús fué bautizado; y orando, el cielo se abrió,
22Y descendió el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma corporal, como paloma, y fué hecha una voz del cielo que decía: Tú eres mi Hijo amado, en ti me he complacido.
23Y el mismo Jesús comenzaba á ser como de treinta años, hijo de José, como se creía; que fué hijo de Elí,
24Que fué de Mathat, que fué de Leví, que fué de Melchî, que fué de Janna, que fué de José,
25Que fué de Mattathías, que fué de Amós, que fué de Nahum, que fué de Esli,

1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judæa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
2Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
11He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
12Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
14And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
21Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
23And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
24Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
25Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,

2during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.
5Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6All flesh will see God’s salvation.’”
7He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!

10The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
11He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
12Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
13He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
15As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
17His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,
19but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,
20added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
