Y decía Juan a las gentes que venían a recibir su bautismo : ¡Oh raza de víboras!, ¿quién os ha enseñado que así podréis huir de la ira de Dios que os amenaza?
Y decía á las gentes que salían para ser bautizadas de él: ¡Oh generación de víboras, quién os enseñó á huir de la ira que vendrá?
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Haced dignos frutos de penitencia, y no andéis diciendo: Tenemos a Abrahán por padre. Porque yo os digo que de estas piedras puede hacer Dios nacer hijos de Abrahán.
Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comencéis á decir en vosotros mismos: Tenemos á Abraham por padre: porque os digo que puede Dios, aun de estas piedras, levantar hijos á Abraham.
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
El hacha está ya puesta a la raíz de los árboles. Así que, todo árbol que no da fruto, será cortado y arrojado al fuego.
Y ya también el hacha está puesta á la raíz de los árboles: todo árbol pues que no hace buen fruto, es cortado, y echado en el fuego.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
Y preguntándole las gentes, ¿qué es lo que debemos, pues, hacer?,
Y las gentes le preguntaban, diciendo: ¿Pues qué haremos?
And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
les respondía, diciendo: El que tiene dos vestidos, dé al que no tiene ninguno; y haga otro tanto el que tiene qué comer.
Y respondiendo, les dijo: El que tiene dos túnicas, dé al que no tiene; y el que tiene qué comer, haga lo mismo.
He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
Vinieron asimismo publicanos a ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿y nosotros qué debemos hacer?
Y vinieron también publicanos para ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿qué haremos?
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
Les respondió: No exijáis más de lo que os está ordenado.
Y él les dijo: No exijáis más de lo que os está ordenado.
And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
Le preguntaban también los soldados: ¿Y nosotros qué haremos? A éstos dijo: No hagáis extorsiones a nadie, ni uséis de fraude; y contentaos con vuestras pagas.
Y le preguntaron también los soldados, diciendo: Y nosotros, ¿qué haremos? Y les dice: No hagáis extorsión á nadie, ni calumniéis; y contentaos con vuestras pagas.
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
Mas opinando el pueblo que quizá Juan era el Cristo , o Mesías, y prevaleciendo esta opinión en los corazones de todos,
Y estando el pueblo esperando, y pensando todos de Juan en sus corazones, si él fuese el Cristo,
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
Juan la rebatió, diciendo públicamente: Yo en verdad os bautizo con agua; pero está para venir otro más poderoso que yo, al cual no soy yo digno de desatar la correa de sus zapatos: él os bautizará con el Espíritu Santo, y con el fuego.
Respondió Juan, diciendo á todos: Yo, á la verdad, os bautizo en agua; mas viene quien es más poderoso que yo, de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de sus zapatos: él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego;
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
Tomará en su mano el azadón, y limpiará su era metiendo después el trigo en su granero y quemando la paja en un fuego inextinguible.
Cuyo bieldo está en su mano, y limpiará su era, y juntará el trigo en su alfolí, y la paja quemará en fuego que nunca se apagará.
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Muchas otras cosas además de éstas anunciaba al pueblo en las exhortaciones que le hacía.
Y amonestando, otras muchas cosas también anunciaba al pueblo.
And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,
Y como reprendiese al tetrarca Herodes por razón de Herodías, mujer de su hermano Filipo, y con motivo de todos los males que había hecho,
Entonces Herodes el tetrarca, siendo reprendido por él á causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano, y de todas las maldades que había hecho Herodes,
But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

añadió después Herodes a todos ellos el de poner a Juan en la cárcel.

En el tiempo en que concurría todo el pueblo a recibir el bautismo , habiendo sido también Jesús bautizado, y estando en oración, sucedió el abrirse el cielo,
Y aconteció que, como todo el pueblo se bautizaba, también Jesús fué bautizado; y orando, el cielo se abrió,
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

y bajar sobre él el Espíritu Santo en forma corporal como de una paloma; y se oyó del cielo esta voz: Tú eres mi hijo amado, en ti tengo puestas todas mis delicias.
Y descendió el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma corporal, como paloma, y fué hecha una voz del cielo que decía: Tú eres mi Hijo amado, en ti me he complacido.
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Tenía Jesús al comenzar cerca de treinta años, hijo, como se creía, de José, el cual fue hijo de Helí que lo fue de Matat.
