1Er forderte aber die Zwölf zusammen und gab ihnen Gewalt und Macht über alle Teufel und daß sie Seuchen heilen konnten,
2und sandte sie aus, zu predigen das Reich Gottes und zu heilen die Kranken.
3Und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr sollt nichts mit euch nehmen auf den Weg, weder Stab noch Tasche noch Brot noch Geld; es soll auch einer nicht zwei Röcke haben.
4Und wo ihr in ein Haus geht, da bleibet, bis ihr von dannen zieht.
5Und welche euch nicht aufnehmen, da gehet aus von derselben Stadt und schüttelt auch den Staub ab von euren Füßen zu einem Zeugnis über sie.
6Und sie gingen hinaus und durchzogen die Märkte, predigten das Evangelium und machten gesund an allen Enden.
7Es kam aber vor Herodes, den Vierfürsten, alles, was durch ihn geschah; und er ward betreten, dieweil von etlichen gesagt ward; Johannes ist von den Toten auferstanden;
8von etlichen aber: Elia ist erschienen; von etlichen aber: Es ist der alten Propheten einer auferstanden.
9Und Herodes sprach: Johannes, den habe ich enthauptet; wer ist aber dieser, von dem ich solches höre? und begehrte ihn zu sehen.
10Und die Apostel kamen wieder und erzählten ihm, wie große Dinge sie getan hatten. Und er nahm sie zu sich und entwich besonders in eine Wüste bei der Stadt, die da heißt Bethsaida.
11Da das Volk des inneward, zog es ihm nach. Und er ließ sie zu sich und sagte ihnen vom Reich Gottes und machte gesund, die es bedurften. Aber der Tag fing an, sich zu neigen.
12Da traten zu ihm die Zwölf und sprachen zu ihm: Laß das Volk von dir, daß sie hingehen in die Märkte umher und in die Dörfer, daß sie Herberge und Speise finden, denn wir sind hier in der Wüste.
13Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Gebt ihr ihnen zu essen. Sie sprachen, wir haben nicht mehr denn fünf Brote und zwei Fische; es sei denn, daß wir hingehen sollen und Speise kaufen für so großes Volk.
14(Denn es waren bei fünftausend Mann.) Er sprach aber zu seinen Jüngern: Lasset sie sich setzen in Schichten, je fünfzig und fünfzig.
15Und sie taten also, und es setzten sich alle.
16Da nahm er die fünf Brote und zwei Fische und sah auf gen Himmel und dankte darüber, brach sie und gab sie den Jüngern, daß sie dem Volk vorlegten.
17Und sie aßen und wurden alle satt; und wurden aufgehoben, was ihnen übrigblieb von Brocken, zwölf Körbe.
18Und es begab sich, da er allein war und betete und seine Jünger zu ihm traten, fragte er sie und sprach: Wer sagen die Leute, daß ich sei?
19Sie antworteten und sprachen: Sie sagen, du seist Johannes der Täufer; etliche aber, du seist Elia; etliche aber, es sei der alten Propheten einer auferstanden.
20Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Wer saget ihr aber, daß ich sei? Da antwortete Petrus und sprach: Du bist der Christus Gottes!
21Und er bedrohte sie und gebot, daß sie das niemand sagten,
22und sprach: Des Menschen Sohn muß noch viel leiden und verworfen werden von den Ältesten und Hohenpriestern und Schriftgelehrten und getötet werden und am dritten Tage auferstehen.
23Da sprach er zu ihnen allen: Wer mir folgen will, der verleugne sich selbst und nehme sein Kreuz auf sich täglich und folge mir nach.
24Denn wer sein Leben erhalten will, der wird es verlieren; wer aber sein Leben verliert um meinetwillen, der wird's erhalten.
25Und welchen Nutzen hätte der Mensch, ob er die ganze Welt gewönne, und verlöre sich selbst oder beschädigte sich selbst?
26Wer sich aber mein und meiner Worte schämt, des wird sich des Menschen Sohn auch schämen, wenn er kommen wird in seiner Herrlichkeit und seines Vaters und der heiligen Engel.
27Ich sage euch aber wahrlich, daß etliche sind von denen, die hier stehen, die den Tod nicht schmecken werden, bis daß sie das Reich Gottes sehen.
28Und es begab sich nach diesen Reden bei acht Tagen, daß er zu sich nahm Petrus, Johannes und Jakobus und ging auf einen Berg, zu beten.
29Und da er betete, ward die Gestalt seines Angesichts anders, und sein Kleid ward weiß und glänzte.
30Und siehe, zwei Männer redeten mit ihm, welche waren Mose und Elia;
31die erschienen in Klarheit und redeten von dem Ausgang, welchen er sollte erfüllen zu Jerusalem.
32Petrus aber, und die mit ihm waren, waren voll Schlafs. Da sie aber aufwachten, sahen sie seine Klarheit und die zwei Männer bei ihm stehen.
33Und es begab sich, da die von ihm wichen, sprach Petrus zu Jesu: Meister, hier ist gut sein. Lasset uns drei Hütten machen: dir eine, Mose eine und Elia eine. Und er wußte nicht, was er redete.
34Da er aber solches redete, kam eine Wolke und überschattete sie; und sie erschraken, da sie die Wolke überzog.
35Und es fiel eine Stimme aus der Wolke, die sprach: Dieser ist mein lieber Sohn; den sollt ihr hören!
36Und indem solche Stimme geschah, fanden sie Jesum allein. Und sie verschwiegen es und verkündigten niemand in jenen Tagen, was sie gesehen hatten.
37Es begab sich aber den Tag hernach, da sie von dem Berge kamen, kam ihnen entgegen viel Volks.
38Und siehe, ein Mann unter dem Volk rief und sprach: Meister, ich bitte dich, besiehe doch meinen Sohn, denn er ist mein einziger Sohn.
39Siehe, der Geist ergreift ihn, so schreit er alsbald, und reißt ihn, daß er schäumt, und mit Not weicht er von ihm, wenn er ihn gerissen hat.
40Und ich habe deine Jünger gebeten, daß sie ihn austrieben, und sie konnten nicht.
41Da antwortete Jesus und sprach: O du ungläubige und verkehrte Art, wie lange soll ich bei euch sein und euch dulden? Bringe deinen Sohn her!
42Und da er zu ihm kam, riß ihn der Teufel und zerrte ihn. Jesus aber bedrohte den unsauberen Geist und machte den Knaben gesund und gab ihn seinem Vater wieder.
43Und sie entsetzten sich alle über die Herrlichkeit Gottes. Da sie sich aber alle verwunderten über alles, was er tat, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern:
44Fasset ihr zu euren Ohren diese Rede: Des Menschen Sohn muß überantwortet werden in der Menschen Hände.
45Aber das Wort verstanden sie nicht, und es ward vor ihnen verborgen, daß sie es nicht begriffen. Und sie fürchteten sich, ihn zu fragen um dieses Wort.
46Es kam auch ein Gedanke unter sie, welcher unter ihnen der Größte wäre.
47Da aber Jesus den Gedanken ihres Herzens sah, ergriff er ein Kind und stellte es neben sich
48und sprach zu ihnen: Wer dies Kind aufnimmt in meinem Namen, der nimmt mich auf; und wer mich aufnimmt, der nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat. Welcher aber der Kleinste ist unter euch allen, der wird groß sein.
49Da antwortete Johannes und sprach: Meister, wir sahen einen, der trieb die Teufel aus in deinem Namen; und wir wehrten ihm, denn er folgt dir nicht mit uns.
50Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wehret ihm nicht; denn wer nicht wider uns ist, der ist für uns.
51Es begab sich aber, da die Zeit erfüllet war, daß er sollte von hinnen genommen werden, wendete er sein Angesicht, stracks gen Jerusalem zu wandeln.
52Und er sandte Boten vor sich hin; die gingen hin und kamen in einen Markt der Samariter, daß sie ihm Herberge bestellten.
53Und sie nahmen ihn nicht an, darum daß er sein Angesicht gewendet hatte, zu wandeln gen Jerusalem.
54Da aber das seine Jünger Jakobus und Johannes sahen, sprachen sie: HERR, willst du, so wollen wir sagen, daß Feuer vom Himmel falle und verzehre sie, wie Elia tat.
55Jesus aber wandte sich um und bedrohte sie und sprach: Wisset ihr nicht, welches Geistes Kinder ihr seid?
56Des Menschen Sohn ist nicht gekommen, der Menschen Seelen zu verderben, sondern zu erhalten.
57Und sie gingen in einen anderen Markt. Es begab sich aber, da sie auf dem Wege waren, sprach einer zu ihm: Ich will dir folgen, wo du hin gehst.
58Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Die Füchse haben Gruben, und die Vögel unter dem Himmel haben Nester; aber des Menschen Sohn hat nicht, da er sein Haupt hin lege.
59Und er sprach zu einem andern: Folge mir nach! Der sprach aber: HERR, erlaube mir, daß ich zuvor hingehe und meinen Vater begrabe.
60Aber Jesus sprach zu ihm: Laß die Toten ihre Toten begraben; gehe du aber hin und verkündige das Reich Gottes!
61Und ein anderer sprach: HERR, ich will dir nachfolgen; aber erlaube mir zuvor, daß ich einen Abschied mache mit denen, die in meinem Hause sind.
62Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Wer seine Hand an den Pflug legt und sieht zurück, der ist nicht geschickt zum Reich Gottes.

1Y JUNTANDO á sus doce discípulos, les dió virtud y potestad sobre todos los demonios, y que sanasen enfermedades.
2Y los envió á que predicasen el reino de Dios, y que sanasen á los enfermos.
3Y les dice: No toméis nada para el camino, ni báculo, ni alforja, ni pan, ni dinero; ni tengáis dos vestidos cada uno.
4Y en cualquiera casa en que entrareis, quedad allí, y de allí salid.
5Y todos los que no os recibieren, saliéndoos de aquella ciudad, aun el polvo sacudid de vuestros pies en testimonio contra ellos.
6Y saliendo, rodeaban por todas las aldeas, anunciando el evangelio, y sanando por todas partes.
7Y oyó Herodes el tetrarca todas las cosas que hacía; y estaba en duda, porque decían algunos: Juan ha resucitado de los muertos;
8Y otros: Elías ha aparecido; y otros: Algún profeta de los antiguos ha resucitado.
9Y dijo Herodes: A Juan yo degollé: ¿quién pues será éste, de quien yo oigo tales cosas? Y procuraba verle.
10Y vueltos los apóstoles, le contaron todas las cosas que habían hecho. Y tomándolos, se retiró aparte á un lugar desierto de la ciudad que se llama Bethsaida.
11Y como lo entendieron las gentes, le siguieron; y él las recibió, y les hablaba del reino de Dios, y sanaba á los que tenían necesidad de cura.
12Y el día había comenzado á declinar; y llegándose los doce, le dijeron: Despide á las gentes, para que yendo á las aldeas y heredades de alrededor, procedan á alojarse y hallen viandas; porque aquí estamos en lugar desierto.
13Y les dice: Dadles vosotros de comer. Y dijeron ellos: No tenemos más que cinco panes y dos pescados, si no vamos nosotros á comprar viandas para toda esta compañía.
14Y eran como cinco mil hombres. Entonces dijo á sus discípulos: Hacedlos sentar en ranchos, de cincuenta en cincuenta.
15Y así lo hicieron, haciéndolos sentar á todos.
16Y tomando los cinco panes y los dos pescados, mirando al cielo los bendijo, y partió, y dió á sus discípulos para que pusiesen delante de las gentes.
17Y comieron todos, y se hartaron; y alzaron lo que les sobró, doce cestos de pedazos.
18Y aconteció que estando él solo orando, estaban con él los discípulos; y les preguntó diciendo: ¿Quién dicen las gentes que soy?
19Y ellos respondieron, y dijeron: Juan el Bautista; y otros, Elías; y otros, que algún profeta de los antiguos ha resucitado.
20Y les dijo: ¿Y vosotros, quién decís que soy? Entonces respondiendo Simón Pedro, dijo: El Cristo de Dios.
21Mas él, conminándolos, mandó que á nadie dijesen esto;
22Diciendo: Es necesario que el Hijo del hombre padezca muchas cosas, y sea desechado de los ancianos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas, y que sea muerto, y resucite al tercer día.
23Y decía á todos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese á sí mismo, y tome su cruz cada día, y sígame.
24Porque cualquiera que quisiere salvar su vida, la perderá; y cualquiera que perdiere su vida por causa de mí, éste la salvará.
25Porque ¿qué aprovecha al hombre, si granjeare todo el mundo, y se pierda él á sí mismo, ó corra peligro de sí?
26Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras, de este tal el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará cuando viniere en su gloria, y del Padre, y de los santos ángeles.
27Y os digo en verdad, que hay algunos de los que están aquí, que no gustarán la muerte, hasta que vean el reino de Dios.
28Y aconteció como ocho días después de estas palabras, que tomó á Pedro y á Juan y á Jacobo, y subió al monte á orar.
29Y entre tanto que oraba, la apariencia de su rostro se hizo otra, y su vestido blanco y resplandeciente.
30Y he aquí dos varones que hablaban con él, los cuales eran Moisés y Elías;
31Que aparecieron en majestad, y hablaban de su salida, la cual había de cumplir en Jerusalem.
32Y Pedro y los que estaban con él, estaban cargados de sueño: y como despertaron, vieron su majestad, y á aquellos dos varones que estaban con él.
33Y aconteció, que apartándose ellos de él, Pedro dice á Jesús: Maestro, bien es que nos quedemos aquí: y hagamos tres pabellones, uno para ti, y uno para Moisés, y uno para Elías; no sabiendo lo que se decía.
34Y estando él hablando esto, vino una nube que los cubrió; y tuvieron temor, entrando ellos en la nube.
35Y vino una voz de la nube, que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado; á él oid.
36Y pasada aquella voz, Jesús fué hallado solo: y ellos callaron; y por aquellos días no dijeron nada á nadie de lo que habían visto.
37Y aconteció al día siguiente, que apartándose ellos del monte, gran compañía les salió al encuentro.
38Y he aquí, un hombre de la compañía clamó, diciendo: Maestro, ruégote que veas á mi hijo; que es el único que tengo:
39Y he aquí un espíritu le toma, y de repente da voces; y le despedaza y hace echar espuma, y apenas se aparta de él quebrantándole.
40Y rogué á tus discípulos que le echasen fuera, y no pudieron.
41Y respondiendo Jesús, dice: ¡Oh generación infiel y perversa! ¿hasta cuándo tengo de estar con vosotros, y os sufriré? Trae tu hijo acá.
42Y como aun se acercaba, el demonio le derribó y despedazó: mas Jesús increpó al espíritu inmundo, y sanó al muchacho, y se lo volvió á su padre.
43Y todos estaban atónitos de la grandeza de Dios. Y maravillándose todos de todas las cosas que hacía, dijo á sus discípulos:
44Poned vosotros en vuestros oídos estas palabras; porque ha de acontecer que el Hijo del hombre será entregado en manos de hombres.
45Mas ellos no entendían esta palabra, y les era encubierta para que no la entendiesen; y temían preguntarle de esta palabra.
46Entonces entraron en disputa, cuál de ellos sería el mayor.
47Mas Jesús, viendo los pensamientos del corazón de ellos, tomó un niño, y púsole junto á sí,
48Y les dice: Cualquiera que recibiere este niño en mi nombre, á mí recibe; y cualquiera que me recibiere á mí, recibe al que me envió; porque el que fuere el menor entre todos vosotros, éste será el grande.
49Entonces respondiendo Juan, dijo: Maestro, hemos visto á uno que echaba fuera demonios en tu nombre; y se lo prohibimos, porque no sigue con nosotros.
50Jesús le dijo: No se lo prohibáis; porque el que no es contra nosotros, por nosotros es.
51Y aconteció que, como se cumplió el tiempo en que había de ser recibido arriba, él afirmó su rostro para ir á Jerusalem.
52Y envió mensajeros delante de sí, los cuales fueron y entraron en una ciudad de los Samaritanos, para prevenirle.
53Mas no le recibieron, porque era su traza de ir á Jerusalem.
54Y viendo esto sus discípulos Jacobo y Juan, dijeron: Señor, ¿quieres que mandemos que descienda fuego del cielo, y los consuma, como hizo Elías?
55Entonces volviéndose él, los reprendió, diciendo: Vosotros no sabéis de qué espíritu sois;
56Porque el Hijo del hombre no ha venido para perder las almas de los hombres, sino para salvarlas. Y se fueron á otra aldea.
57Y aconteció que yendo ellos, uno le dijo en el camino: Señor, te seguiré donde quiera que fueres.
58Y le dijo Jesús: Las zorras tienen cuevas, y las aves de los cielos nidos; mas el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde recline la cabeza.
59Y dijo á otro: Sígueme. Y él dijo: Señor, déjame que primero vaya y entierre á mi padre.
60Y Jesús le dijo: Deja los muertos que entierren á sus muertos; y tú, ve, y anuncia el reino de Dios.
61Entonces también dijo otro: Te seguiré, Señor; mas déjame que me despida primero de los que están en mi casa.
62Y Jesús le dijo: Ninguno que poniendo su mano al arado mira atrás, es apto para el reino de Dios.

1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
8And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
15And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.
27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
37And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
43And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

1He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick.
3He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey—no staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money. Don’t have two tunics each.
4Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there.
5As many as don’t receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
6They departed and went throughout the villages, preaching the Good News and healing everywhere.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,
8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.
9Herod said, “I beheaded John, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” He sought to see him.
10The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them and withdrew apart to a desert region of a city called Bethsaida.
11But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing.
12The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms and lodge and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”
13But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.”
14For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
15They did so, and made them all sit down.
16He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17They ate and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
18As he was praying alone, the disciples were near him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”
19They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”
20He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
21But he warned them and commanded them to tell this to no one,
22saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”
23He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
24For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.
25For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?
26For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.
27But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”
28About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.
29As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.
30Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,
31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
32Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.
33As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.
34While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.
35A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”
36When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
37On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.
38Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.
39Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.
40I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”
41Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
42While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
44“Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”
45But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
46An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.
47Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,
48and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.”
49John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”
50Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”
51It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem
52and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.
53They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.
54When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”
55But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.
56For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” They went to another village.
57As they went on the way, a certain man said to him, “I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”
58Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59He said to another, “Follow me!” But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
60But Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce God’s Kingdom.”
61Another also said, “I want to follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to those who are at my house.”
62But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for God’s Kingdom.”
