1Lorsque Jésus eut achevé de donner ses instructions à ses douze disciples, il partit de là, pour enseigner et prêcher dans les villes du pays.
2Jean, ayant entendu parler dans sa prison des œuvres du Christ, lui fit dire par ses disciples:
3Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?
4Jésus leur répondit: Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et ce que vous voyez:
5les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, et la bonne nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres.
6Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute!
7Comme ils s’en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire à la foule, au sujet de Jean: Qu’êtes-vous allés voir au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?
8Mais, qu’êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu d’habits précieux? Voici, ceux qui portent des habits précieux sont dans les maisons des rois.
9Qu’êtes-vous donc allés voir? Un prophète? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu’un prophète.
10Car c’est celui dont il est écrit: Voici, j’envoie mon messager devant ta face, Pour préparer ton chemin devant toi.
11Je vous le dis en vérité, parmi ceux qui sont nés de femmes, il n’en a point paru de plus grand que Jean-Baptiste. Cependant, le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui.
12Depuis le temps de Jean-Baptiste jusqu’à présent, le royaume des cieux est forcé, et ce sont les violents qui s’en emparent.
13Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu’à Jean;
14et, si vous voulez le comprendre, c’est lui qui est l’Élie qui devait venir.
15Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre entende.
16A qui comparerai-je cette génération?Elle ressemble à des enfants assis dans des places publiques, et qui, s’adressant à d’autres enfants,
17disent: Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n’avez pas dansé; nous avons chanté des complaintes, et vous ne vous êtes pas lamentés.
18Car Jean est venu, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent: Il a un démon.
19Le Fils de l’homme est venu, mangeant et buvant, et ils disent: C’est un mangeur et un buveur, un ami des publicains et des gens de mauvaise vie. Mais la sagesse a été justifiée par ses œuvres.
20Alors il se mit à faire des reproches aux villes dans lesquelles avaient eu lieu la plupart de ses miracles, parce qu’elles ne s’étaient pas repenties.
21Malheur à toi, Chorazin! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïda! Car, si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits dans Tyr et dans Sidon, il y a longtemps qu’elles se seraient repenties, en prenantle sac et la cendre.
22C’est pourquoi je vous le dis: au jour du jugement, Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins rigoureusement que vous.
23Et toi, Capernaüm, seras-tu élevée jusqu’au ciel? Non. Tu seras abaissée jusqu’au séjour des morts; car, si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de toi avaient été faits dans Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd’hui.
24C’est pourquoi je vous le dis:au jour du jugement, le pays de Sodome sera traité moins rigoureusement que toi.
25En ce temps-là, Jésus prit la parole, et dit: Je te loue, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre,de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents, et de ce que tu les as révélées aux enfants.
26Oui, Père, je te loue de ce que tu l’as voulu ainsi.
27Toutes choses m’ont été données par mon Père, etpersonne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n’est le Père; personne non plus ne connaît le Père, si ce n’est le Fils et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.
28Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et chargés, et je vous donnerai du repos.
29Prenez mon joug sur vous et recevez mes instructions, car je suisdoux et humble de cœur;et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes.
30Car mon joug est doux, et mon fardeau léger.

1Y FUÉ, que acabando Jesús de dar mandamientos á sus doce discípulos, se fué de allí á enseñar y á predicar en las ciudades de ellos.
2Y oyendo Juan en la prisión los hechos de Cristo, le envió dos de sus discípulos,
3Diciendo: ¿Eres tú aquél que había de venir, ó esperaremos á otro?
4Y respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Id, y haced saber á Juan las cosas que oís y veis:
5Los ciegos ven, y los cojos andan; los leprosos son limpiados, y los sordos oyen; los muertos son resucitados, y á los pobres es anunciado el evangelio.
6Y bienaventurado es el que no fuere escandalizado en mí.
7E idos ellos, comenzó Jesús á decir de Juan á las gentes: ¿Qué salisteis á ver al desierto? ¿una caña que es meneada del viento?
8Mas ¿qué salisteis á ver? ¿un hombre cubierto de delicados vestidos? He aquí, los que traen vestidos delicados, en las casas de los reyes están.
9Mas ¿qué salisteis á ver? ¿un profeta? También os digo, y más que profeta.
10Porque éste es de quien está escrito: He aquí, yo envío mi mensajero delante de tu faz, que aparejará tu camino delante de ti.
11De cierto os digo, que no se levantó entre los que nacen de mujeres otro mayor que Juan el Bautista; mas el que es muy más pequeño en el reino de los cielos, mayor es que él.
12Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, al reino de los cielos se hace fuerza, y los valientes lo arrebatan.
13Porque todos los profetas y la ley hasta Juan profetizaron.
14Y si queréis recibir, él es aquel Elías que había de venir.
15El que tiene oídos para oir, oiga.
16Mas ¿á quién compararé esta generación? Es semejante á los muchachos que se sientan en las plazas, y dan voces á sus compañeros,
17Y dicen: Os tañimos flauta, y no bailasteis; os endechamos, y no lamentasteis.
18Porque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen: Demonio tiene.
19Vino el Hijo del hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: He aquí un hombre comilón, y bebedor de vino, amigo de publicanos y de pecadores. Mas la sabiduría es justificada por sus hijos.
20Entonces comenzó á reconvenir á las ciudades en las cuales habían sido hechas muy muchas de sus maravillas, porque no se habían arrepentido, diciendo:
21¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Bethsaida! porque si en Tiro y en Sidón fueran hechas las maravillas que han sido hechas en vosotras, en otro tiempo se hubieran arrepentido en saco y en ceniza.
22Por tanto os digo, que á Tiro y á Sidón será más tolerable el castigo en el día del juicio, que á vosotras.
23Y tú, Capernaum, que eres levantada hasta el cielo, hasta los infiernos serás abajada; porque si en los de Sodoma fueran hechas las maravillas que han sido hechas en ti, hubieran quedado hasta el día de hoy.
24Por tanto os digo, que á la tierra de los de Sodoma será más tolerable el castigo en el día del juicio, que á ti.
25En aquel tiempo, respondiendo Jesús, dijo: Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, que hayas escondido estas cosas de los sabios y de los entendidos, y las hayas revelado á los niños.
26Así, Padre, pues que así agradó en tus ojos.
27Todas las cosas me son entregadas de mi Padre: y nadie conoció al Hijo, sino el Padre; ni al Padre conoció alguno, sino el Hijo, y aquel á quien el Hijo lo quisiere revelar.
28Venid á mí todos los que estáis trabajados y cargados, que yo os haré descansar.
29Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros, y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón; y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas.
30Porque mi yugo es fácil, y ligera mi carga.

1And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
9But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

1When Jesus had finished directing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.
2Now when John heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples
3and said to him, “Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?”
4Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
5the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
6Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me.”
7As these went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
8But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
9But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.
10For this is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’
11Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptizer; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.
12From the days of John the Baptizer until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14If you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.
15He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
16“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call to their companions
17and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you didn’t dance. We mourned for you, and you didn’t lament.’
18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.”
20Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they didn’t repent.
21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

24But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”
25At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.
26Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
27All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.
28“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
