1In quel tempo Erode, il tetrarca, udì la fama di Gesù,
2e disse ai suoi servitori: Costui è Giovanni Battista; egli è risuscitato dai morti, e però agiscono in lui le potenze miracolose.
3Perché Erode, fatto arrestare Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione a motivo di Erodiada, moglie di Filippo suo fratello; perché Giovanni gli diceva:
4E’ non t’è lecito d’averla.
5E benché desiderasse farlo morire, temette il popolo che lo teneva per profeta.
6Ora, come si celebrava il giorno natalizio di Erode, la figliuola di Erodiada ballò nel convito e piacque ad Erode;
7ond’egli promise con giuramento di darle tutto quello che domanderebbe.
8Ed ella, spintavi da sua madre, disse: Dammi qui in un piatto la testa di Giovanni Battista.
9E il re ne fu contristato; ma, a motivo de’ giuramenti e de’ commensali, comandò che le fosse data,
10e mandò a far decapitare Giovanni nella prigione.
11E la testa di lui fu portata in un piatto e data alla fanciulla, che la portò a sua madre.
12E i discepoli di Giovanni andarono a prenderne il corpo e lo seppellirono; poi vennero a darne la nuova a Gesù.
13Udito ciò, Gesù si ritirò di là in barca verso un luogo deserto, in disparte; e le turbe, saputolo, lo seguitarono a piedi dalle città.
14E Gesù, smontato dalla barca, vide una gran moltitudine; n’ebbe compassione, e ne guarì gl’infermi.
15Or, facendosi sera, i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono e gli dissero: Il luogo è deserto e l’ora è già passata; licenzia dunque le folle, affinché vadano pei villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare.
16Ma Gesù disse loro: Non hanno bisogno d’andarsene; date lor voi da mangiare!
17Ed essi gli risposero: Non abbiam qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci.
18Ed egli disse: Portatemeli qua.
19Ed avendo ordinato alle turbe di accomodarsi sull’erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, levati gli occhi al cielo, rese grazie; poi, spezzati i pani, li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli alle turbe.
20E tutti mangiarono e furon sazi; e si portaron via, dei pezzi avanzati, dodici ceste piene.
21E quelli che avevano mangiato eran circa cinquemila uomini, oltre le donne e i fanciulli.
22Subito dopo, Gesù obbligò i suoi discepoli a montar nella barca ed a precederlo sull’altra riva, mentr’egli licenzierebbe le turbe.
23E licenziatele si ritirò in disparte sul monte per pregare. E fattosi sera, era quivi tutto solo.
24Frattanto la barca, già di molti stadi lontana da terra, era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario.
25Ma alla quarta vigilia della notte Gesù andò verso loro, camminando sul mare.
26E i discepoli, vedendolo camminar sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: E’ un fantasma! E dalla paura gridarono.
27Ma subito Gesù parlò loro e disse: State di buon animo, son io; non temete!
28E Pietro gli rispose: Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venir a te sulle acque.
29Ed egli disse: Vieni! E Pietro, smontato dalla barca, camminò sulle acque e andò verso Gesù.
30Ma vedendo il vento, ebbe paura; e cominciando a sommergersi, gridò: Signore, salvami!
31E Gesù, stesa subito la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: O uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?
32E quando furono montati nella barca, il vento s’acquetò.
33Allora quelli che erano nella barca si prostrarono dinanzi a lui, dicendo: Veramente tu sei Figliuol di Dio!
34E, passati all’altra riva, vennero nel paese di Gennezaret.
35E la gente di quel luogo, avendolo riconosciuto, mandò per tutto il paese all’intorno, e gli presentaron tutti i malati,
36e lo pregavano che lasciasse loro toccare non foss’altro che il lembo del suo vestito; e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furon completamente guariti.

1EN aquel tiempo Herodes el tetrarca oyó la fama de Jesús,
2Y dijo á sus criados: Este es Juan el Bautista: él ha resucitado de los muertos, y por eso virtudes obran en él.
3Porque Herodes había prendido á Juan, y le había aprisionado y puesto en la cárcel, por causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano;
4Porque Juan le decía: No te es lícito tenerla.
5Y quería matarle, mas temía al pueblo; porque le tenían como á profeta.
6Mas celebrándose el día del nacimiento de Herodes, la hija de Herodías danzó en medio, y agradó á Herodes.
7Y prometió él con juramento de darle todo lo que pidiese.
8Y ella, instruída primero de su madre, dijo: Dame aquí en un plato la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.
9Entonces el rey se entristeció; mas por el juramento, y por los que estaban juntamente á la mesa, mandó que se le diese.
10Y enviando, degolló á Juan en la cárcel.
11Y fué traída su cabeza en un plato, y dada á la muchacha; y ella la presentó á su madre.
12Entonces llegaron sus discípulos, y tomaron el cuerpo, y lo enterraron; y fueron, y dieron las nuevas á Jesús.
13Y oyéndolo Jesús, se apartó de allí en un barco á un lugar descierto, apartado: y cuando las gentes lo oyeron, le siguieron á pie de las ciudades.
14Y saliendo Jesús, vió un gran gentío, y tuvo compasión de ellos, y sanó á los que de ellos había enfermos.
15Y cuando fué la tarde del día, se llegaron á él sus discípulos, diciendo: El lugar es desierto, y el tiempo es ya pasado: despide las gentes, para que se vayan por las aldeas, y compren para sí de comer.
16Y Jesús les dijo: No tienen necesidad de irse: dadles vosotros de comer.
17Y ellos dijeron: No tenemos aquí sino cinco panes y dos peces.
18Y él les dijo: Traédmelos acá.
19Y mandando á las gentes recostarse sobre la hierba, tomando los cinco panes y los dos peces, alzando los ojos al cielo, bendijo, y partió y dió los panes á los discípulos, y los discípulos á las gentes.
20Y comieron todos, y se hartaron; y alzaron lo que sobró de los pedazos, doce cestas llenas.
21Y los que comieron fueron como cinco mil hombres, sin las mujeres y los niños.
22Y luego Jesús hizo á sus discípulos entrar en el barco, é ir delante de él á la otra parte del lago, entre tanto que él despedía á las gentes.
23Y despedidas las gentes, subió al monte, apartado, á orar: y como fué la tarde del día, estaba allí solo.
24Y ya el barco estaba en medio de la mar, atormentado de las ondas; porque el viento era contrario.
25Mas á la cuarta vela de la noche, Jesús fué á ellos andando sobre la mar.
26Y los discípulos, viéndole andar sobre la mar, se turbaron, diciendo: Fantasma es. Y dieron voces de miedo.
27Mas luego Jesús les habló, diciendo: Confiad, yo soy; no tengáis miedo.
28Entonces le respondió Pedro, y dijo: Señor, si tú eres, manda que yo vaya á ti sobre las aguas.
29Y él dijo: Ven. Y descendiendo Pedro del barco, andaba sobre las aguas para ir á Jesús.
30Mas viendo el viento fuerte, tuvo miedo; y comenzándose á hundir, dió voces, diciendo: Señor, sálvame.
31Y luego Jesús, extendiendo la mano, trabó de él, y le dice: Oh hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?
32Y como ellos entraron en el barco, sosegóse el viento.
33Entonces los que estaban en el barco, vinieron y le adoraron, diciendo: Verdaderamente eres Hijo de Dios.
34Y llegando á la otra parte, vinieron á la tierra de Genezaret.
35Y como le conocieron los hombres de aquel lugar, enviaron por toda aquella tierra alrededor, y trajeron á él todos los enfermos;
36Y le rogaban que solamente tocasen el borde de su manto; y todos los que tocaron, quedaron sanos.

1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
2And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
3For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
8And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.
9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
12And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18He said, Bring them hither to me.
19And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

1At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,
2and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”
3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
4For John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.
7Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.
8She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer.”
9The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,
10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
11His head was brought on a platter and given to the young lady; and she brought it to her mother.
12His disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
13Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
14Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.”
16But Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
18He said, “Bring them here to me.”
19He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
20They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
21Those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
28Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
29He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
30But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”
34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
35When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region and brought to him all who were sick;
36and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
