Entonces Jesús, dirigiéndose al gentío y a sus discípulos, dijo:

«¡Cualquiera que ve a estos escribas y fariseos creando leyes se creerá que son “Moisés en persona”!
Diciendo: Sobre la cátedra de Moisés se sentaron los escribas y los Fariseos:

Claro, obedézcanlos. ¡Hagan lo que dicen, pero no se les ocurra hacer lo que ellos hacen! Porque ellos mismos no hacen lo que dicen que se debe hacer.
Así que, todo lo que os dijeren que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; mas no hagáis conforme á sus obras: porque dicen, y no hacen.
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.
Recargan a la gente de mandamientos que ni ellos mismos intentan cumplir.
Porque atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; mas ni aun con su dedo las quieren mover.
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

»¡Y luego se dedican a hacer obras de caridad para que los demás los vean! Para aparentar santidad, se ponen en la frente y en los brazos porciones de las Escrituras escritas en las tiras de pergamino o piel más anchas que puedan encontrar, y procuran que los flecos de sus mantos sean más largos que los de los demás.
Antes, todas sus obras hacen para ser mirados de los hombres; porque ensanchan sus filacterias, y extienden los flecos de sus mantos;
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

¡Ah, y les encanta ir a los banquetes y sentarse a las cabeceras de las mesas, e ir a la sinagoga y sentarse en las primeras sillas!
Y aman los primeros asientos en las cenas, y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas;
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
Y cuando andan por las calles, les gusta que les digan: “¡Rabí, rabí!”.
Y las salutaciones en las plazas, y ser llamados de los hombres Rabbí, Rabbí.
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.
No dejen que nadie los llame así. Sólo el Cristo es Rabíy todos los hombres están en el mismo nivel de hermanos.
Mas vosotros, no queráis ser llamados Rabbí; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo; y todos vosotros sois hermanos.
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi’, for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.
Y no llamen a nadie en la tierra “padre”, porque el único digno de ese título es Dios, que está en los cielos.
Y vuestro padre no llaméis á nadie en la tierra; porque uno es vuestro Padre, el cual está en los cielos.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

No se dejen llamar “maestro”, porque sólo hay un Maestro: el Mesías.

Mientras más humildemente sirvamos a los demás, más grandes seremos. Para ser grande hay que servir a los demás,
El que es el mayor de vosotros, sea vuestro siervo.
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

pues los que se creen grandes serán humillados; y los que se humillan serán enaltecidos.
Porque el que se ensalzare, será humillado; y el que se humillare, será ensalzado.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
»¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, porque ni entran al reino de los cielos ni dejan entrar a nadie!
Mas ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque cerráis el reino de los cielos delante de los hombres; que ni vosotros entráis, ni á los que están entrando dejáis entrar.
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que por un lado hacen oraciones larguísimas en las calles y por el otro les roban las casas a las viudas! ¡Hipócritas!
¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque coméis las casas de las viudas, y por pretexto hacéis larga oración: por esto llevaréis más grave juicio.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.
¡Ay de ustedes, hipócritas!, porque recorren el mundo en busca de conversos, y una vez que los encuentran los hacen dos veces más hijos del infierno que ustedes mismos.
¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque rodeáis la mar y la tierra por hacer un prosélito; y cuando fuere hecho, le hacéis hijo del infierno doble más que vosotros.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.
¡Guías ciegos, ay de ustedes!, porque dicen que no importa que se jure en vano por el templo de Dios, pero si alguien jura en vano por el oro del templo, lo condenan. ¡Ciegos insensatos! ¿Qué es más importante, el oro o el templo que santifica el oro?
¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos! que decís: Cualquiera que jurare por el templo es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el oro del templo, deudor es.
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
“Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

¡Insensatos y ciegos! porque ¿cuál es mayor, el oro, ó el templo que santifica al oro?
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
Y dicen que se puede jurar en vano por el altar, pero si se jura en vano por lo que está sobre el altar, lo condenan.
Y: Cualquiera que jurare por el altar, es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el presente que está sobre él, deudor es.
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated.’
¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, la ofrenda que se pone sobre el altar o el altar que santifica la ofrenda?
¡Necios y ciegos! porque, ¿cuál es mayor, el presente, ó el altar que santifica al presente?
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
El que jura por el altar está jurando también por lo que está sobre él;
Pues el que jurare por el altar, jura por él, y por todo lo que está sobre él;
Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it.
y el que jura por el templo está jurando por el templo y por Dios que habita en él.
Y el que jurare por el templo, jura por él, y por Aquél que habita en él;
And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who has been living in it.
Y cuando se jura por el cielo se está jurando por el trono de Dios y por Dios mismo.
Y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios, y por Aquél que está sentado sobre él.
And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it.
»¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos y escribas hipócritas! Porque diezman hasta la última hojilla de menta del jardín y se olvidan de lo más importante, que es hacer justicia y tener misericordia y fe. Sí, hay que diezmar, pero no se puede dejar a un lado lo que es aun más importante.
¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque diezmáis la menta y el eneldo y el comino, y dejasteis lo que es lo más grave de la ley, es á saber, el juicio y la misericordia y la fe: esto era menester hacer, y no dejar lo otro.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.
»¡Guías ciegos, que cuelan el mosquito y se tragan el camello!
¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito, mas tragáis el camello!
Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!
¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas!, porque limpian cuidadosamente el exterior del vaso y dejan el interior lleno de robo e injusticia.
¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque limpiáis lo que está de fuera del vaso y del plato; mas de dentro están llenos de robo y de injusticia.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.
Fariseos ciegos, limpien primero el interior del vaso, para que esté limpio por dentro y por fuera.
¡Fariseo ciego, limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera se haga limpio!
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.
¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, pues son como sepulcros blanqueados: hermosos por fuera, pero dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y podredumbre!
¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque sois semejantes á sepulcros blanqueados, que de fuera, á la verdad, se muestran hermosos, mas de dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda suciedad.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

Así también son ustedes: por fuera se ven santos, pero bajo la apariencia de piedad hay un corazón manchado de hipocresía y pecado.
Así también vosotros de fuera, á la verdad, os mostráis justos á los hombres; mas de dentro, llenos estáis de hipocresía é iniquidad.

»¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas!, porque levantan monumentos a los profetas que los padres de ustedes mataron, y adornan las tumbas de los justos que destruyeron,
¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas, y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the righteous,
y al hacerlo dicen: “¡Nosotros no los habríamos matado!”.
Y decís: Si fuéramos en los días de nuestros padres, no hubiéramos sido sus compañeros en la sangre de los profetas.
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’
¿No se dan cuenta de que se están tildando de hijos de asesinos?
Así que, testimonio dais á vosotros mismos, que sois hijos de aquellos que mataron á los profetas.
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.
¡Acaben de imitarlos! ¡Pónganse a la altura de ellos!
¡Vosotros también henchid la medida de vuestros padres!
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

¡Serpientes, crías de víboras! ¿Cómo van a escapar de la condenación del infierno?
¡Serpientes, generación de víboras! ¿cómo evitaréis el juicio del infierno?
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?
»Yo les enviaré profetas, hombres llenos del Espíritu y escritores inspirados, pero a algunos los crucificarán, a otros les destrozarán las espaldas a latigazos en las sinagogas, y a los demás los perseguirán de ciudad en ciudad.
Por tanto, he aquí, yo envío á vosotros profetas, y sabios, y escribas: y de ellos, á unos mataréis y crucificaréis, y á otros de ellos azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas, y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad:
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

Así caerá sobre ustedes la culpa de la sangre de los justos asesinados, desde Abel hasta Zacarías, el hijo de Berequías, que ustedes mataron entre el altar y el santuario.
Para que venga sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa que se ha derramado sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel el justo, hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Barachîas, al cual matasteis entre el templo y el altar.
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.
¡Los juicios acumulados a través de los siglos caerán sobre esta generación!
De cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación.
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.
»¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas y apedreas a los enviados de Dios! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos como la gallina junta a sus polluelos debajo de sus alas, pero no quisiste!
¡Jerusalem, Jerusalem, que matas á los profetas, y apedreas á los que son enviados á ti! ¡cuántas veces quise juntar tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollos debajo de las alas, y no quisiste!
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!
De ahora en adelante tu casa quedará abandonada,
He aquí vuestra casa os es dejada desierta.
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

porque te aseguro que no me volverás a ver hasta que digas: “¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!”».
Porque os digo que desde ahora no me veréis, hasta que digáis: Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor.
For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
