Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

antwortete aber doch dem König: »Lang lebe der König! Wie sollte ich nicht traurig aussehen, da doch die Stadt, in der sich die Gräber meiner Väter befinden, in Trümmern liegt und ihre Tore vom Feuer verzehrt sind?«
Y dije al rey: El rey viva para siempre. ¿Cómo no estará triste mi rostro, cuando la ciudad, casa de los sepulcros de mis padres, está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas del fuego?
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”
Als der König mich nun fragte: »Um was bittest du denn (unter diesen Umständen)?«, da betete ich zum Gott des Himmels

Nunmehr sagte ich zu ihnen: »Ihr seht das Elend, in dem wir uns befinden, daß Jerusalem nämlich in Trümmern liegt und seine Tore mit Feuer vernichtet sind. Kommt, laßt uns die Mauer Jerusalems wieder aufbauen, damit wir nicht länger ein Gegenstand des Spottes sind!«
Díjeles pues: Vosotros veis el mal en que estamos, que Jerusalem está desierta, y sus puertas consumidas del fuego: venid, y edifiquemos el muro de Jerusalem, y no seamos más en oprobio.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the bad situation that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let’s build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”
Hierauf teilte ich ihnen mit, wie gütig die Hand meines Gottes über mir gewaltet hatte, und auch die Worte, die der König an mich gerichtet hatte. Da erklärten sie: »Ja, wir wollen darangehen und bauen!« Und sie ermutigten sich gegenseitig dazu, das gute Werk in Angriff zu nehmen.

Als aber der Horoniter Sanballat und der ammonitische Knecht Tobija und der Araber Gesem Kunde davon erhielten, verhöhnten und verspotteten sie uns und sagten: »Was ist denn das für eine Sache, die ihr da vornehmt? Ihr wollt euch wohl gegen den König empören?«
