Nehemías 5

Hubo en esos días una gran protesta de las familias del pueblo contra algunos judíos ricos que estaban abusando de ellos.

ENTONCES fué grande el clamor del pueblo y de sus mujeres contra los Judíos sus hermanos.

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

Lo que ocurría era que las familias que se quedaban sin dinero tenían que vender a sus hijos o hipotecar sus campos, viñas o casas para obtener dinero para comprar comida. Algunos ni eso podían hacer, porque ya habían tomado dinero prestado para pagar los impuestos que le pagaban al rey. La gente protestaba:

Y había quien decía: Nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas, somos muchos: hemos por tanto tomado grano para comer y vivir.

For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

For there were some who said, “We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”

Y había quienes decían: Hemos empeñado nuestras tierras, y nuestras viñas, y nuestras casas, para comprar grano en el hambre.

Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

There were also some who said, “We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine.”

Y había quienes decían: Hemos tomado prestado dinero para el tributo del rey, sobre nuestras tierras y viñas.

There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

There were also some who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral.

«Somos sus hermanos, y nuestros hijos son iguales a los de ustedes. Sin embargo, hemos tenido que vender a nuestros hijos como esclavos a fin de obtener el dinero que necesitamos para vivir. Ya hemos vendido algunas de nuestras hijas, y no podemos pagar por su libertad, porque nuestros campos también han sido hipotecados a estos hombres».

Ahora bien, nuestra carne es como la carne de nuestros hermanos, nuestros hijos como sus hijos: y he aquí que nosotros sujetamos nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas á servidumbre, y hay algunas de nuestras hijas sujetas: mas no hay facultad en nuestras manos para rescatarlas, porque nuestras tierras y nuestras viñas son de otros.

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

Me enojé mucho cuando oí esto.

Después de pensarlo, hablé con los ricos y con los funcionarios del gobierno. ―¿Qué es lo que están haciendo? —les pregunté—. ¿Cómo se atreven a pedir propiedades en prenda como condición para ayudar a otro israelita? Entonces convoqué a una asamblea pública para juzgar el asunto.

Meditélo entonces para conmigo, y reprendí á los principales y á los magistrados, y díjeles: ¿Tomáis cada uno usura de vuestros hermanos? Y convoqué contra ellos una grande junta.

Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

En la reunión les dije: ―Nosotros, a la medida de nuestras fuerzas, hemos estado pagando el rescate de nuestros hermanos judíos que regresaron del exilio como esclavos. ¡Y ahora ustedes los están vendiendo para que luego tengamos que volver a redimirlos! Y ellos no hallaban qué decir.

Y díjeles: Nosotros rescatamos á nuestros hermanos Judíos que habían sido vendidos á las gentes, conforme á la facultad que había en nosotros: ¿y vosotros aun vendéis á vuestros hermanos, y serán vendidos á nosotros? Y callaron, que no tuvieron qué responder.

And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

I said to them, “We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found not a word to say.

Entonces insistí: ―Lo que ustedes están haciendo es muy malo. ¿Por qué no actúan ustedes de acuerdo a la instrucción de nuestro Dios? ¿No tenemos enemigos suficientes entre las naciones que nos rodean y que están tratando de destruirnos?

Y dije: No es bien lo que hacéis, ¿no andaréis en temor de nuestro Dios, por no ser el oprobio de las gentes enemigas nuestras?

Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

Casi todos nosotros estamos prestando dinero y granos a nuestros hermanos judíos sin ningún interés. Por eso, les ruego que dejen de hacer de la usura un negocio.

También yo, y mis hermanos, y mis criados, les hemos prestado dinero y grano: relevémosles ahora de este gravamen.

I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

Devuélvanles hoy mismo sus campos, sus viñas, sus olivares y sus casas, y aliviémoslos así de sus cargas.

Ruégoos que les devolváis hoy sus tierras, sus viñas, sus olivares, y sus casas, y la centésima parte del dinero y grano, del vino y del aceite que demandáis de ellos.

Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

Please restore to them, even today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them.”

Ellos estuvieron de acuerdo en hacerlo, y dijeron que ayudarían a sus hermanos sin exigirles nada. Luego convoqué a los sacerdotes e hice que estos hombres juraran cumplir sus promesas.

Y dijeron: Devolveremos, y nada les demandaremos; haremos así como tú dices. Entonces convoqué los sacerdotes, y juramentélos que harían conforme á esto.

Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

Entonces, me sacudí la ropa y dije: ―¡Así sacuda Dios a todo aquel que no cumpla esta promesa! ¡Que así lo sacuda Dios y lo deje sin casa y sin ninguna propiedad! Y todo el pueblo gritó: ―¡Amén! Alabaron a Dios, y cumplieron lo prometido.

Además sacudí mi vestido, y dije: Así sacuda Dios de su casa y de su trabajo á todo hombre que no cumpliere esto, y así sea sacudido y vacío. Y respondió toda la congregación: ¡Amén! Y alabaron á Jehová. Y el pueblo hizo conforme á esto.

Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

Debo mencionar que durante los doce años que fui gobernador de Judá, desde el año veinte hasta el año treinta y dos del reinado de Artajerjes, ni mis ayudantes ni yo aceptamos el salario que me correspondía como gobernador.

También desde el día que me mandó el rey que fuese gobernador de ellos en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte del rey Artajerjes hasta el año treinta y dos, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos comimos el pan del gobernador.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

En cambio, los gobernadores que habían estado antes de mí habían exigido alimento, vino y cuatrocientos ochenta gramos de plata, y habían puesto la población a merced de sus ayudantes, quienes los maltrataban. Pero yo obedecí a Dios y no actué de esa manera.

Mas los primeros gobernadores que fueron antes de mí, cargaron al pueblo, y tomaron de ellos por el pan y por el vino sobre cuarenta siclos de plata: á más de esto, sus criados se enseñoreaban sobre el pueblo; pero yo no hice así, á causa del temor de Dios.

But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

Seguí trabajando en el muro y me negué a comprar tierras. Además, les pedí a mis funcionarios que dedicaran tiempo a la edificación de la muralla.

También en la obra de este muro instauré mi parte, y no compramos heredad: y todos mis criados juntos estaban allí á la obra.

Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

Todo esto, a pesar de que sentaba regularmente a mi mesa a ciento cincuenta funcionarios judíos, sin contar a los visitantes de los países vecinos.

Además ciento y cincuenta hombres de los Judíos y magistrados, y los que venían á nosotros de las gentes que están en nuestros contornos, estaban á mi mesa.

Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

Diariamente se preparaba un buey, seis ovejas grandes y un gran número de aves domésticas. Además, cada diez días nos abastecíamos de vinos en abundancia. No obstante, me negué a establecer impuestos sobre la gente, porque ellos ya estaban pagando demasiados impuestos.

Y lo que se aderezaba para cada día era un buey, seis ovejas escogidas, y aves también se aparejaban para mí, y cada diez días vino en toda abundancia: y con todo esto nunca requerí el pan del gobernador, porque la servidumbre de este pueblo era grave.

Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
