pues ellas invitaban a los hombres a los sacrificios de sus dioses. El pueblo comió de los sacrificios y se inclinó ante esos dioses.
Las cuales llamaron al pueblo á los sacrificios de sus dioses: y el pueblo comió, é inclinóse á sus dioses.
And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

De esta manera, Israel se unió a la adoración de Baal de Peor, y el enojo de Yahvé se encendió contra Israel.
Y allegóse el pueblo á Baal-peor; y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel.
And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

Yahvé le dijo a Moisés: “Reúne a todos los líderes del pueblo y ahórquenlos delante de Yahvé a plena luz del día, para que el ardiente enojo de Yahvé se aparte de Israel”.
Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: Toma todos los príncipes del pueblo, y ahórcalos á Jehová delante del sol; y la ira del furor de Jehová se apartará de Israel.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to the LORD before the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”
Entonces Moisés les dijo a los jueces de Israel: “Cada uno de ustedes debe matar a aquellos de sus hombres que se hayan unido a Baal de Peor”.

And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.

En ese momento, un hombre de Israel llegó al campamento trayendo a una mujer madianita para presentarla a sus familiares. Lo hizo a la vista de Moisés y de toda la comunidad israelita, mientras ellos lloraban a la entrada de la Tienda del Encuentro.
Y he aquí un varón de los hijos de Israel vino y trajo una Madianita á sus hermanos, á ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, llorando ellos á la puerta del tabernáculo del testimonio.
And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Cuando Finees, hijo de Eleazar y nieto del sacerdote Aarón, vio esto, se levantó de en medio de la asamblea, tomó una lanza en su mano,

y siguió al israelita hasta el interior de la tienda. Allí los atravesó a los dos por el vientre, tanto al hombre de Israel como a la mujer. Con esto se detuvo la plaga que estaba matando a los israelitas.
Y fué tras el varón de Israel á la tienda, y alanceólos á ambos, al varón de Israel, y á la mujer por su vientre. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel.

Sin embargo, veinticuatro mil personas murieron a causa de esa plaga.

“Finees, hijo de Eleazar y nieto del sacerdote Aarón, ha apartado mi enojo de los hijos de Israel. Él demostró el mismo celo que yo siento por ustedes, y por eso no destruí por completo a los israelitas en mi celo.
Phinees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón el sacerdote, ha hecho tornar mi furor de los hijos de Israel, llevado de celo entre ellos: por lo cual yo no he consumido en mi celo á los hijos de Israel.
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

El israelita que fue asesinado junto a la mujer madianita se llamaba Zimri, hijo de Salu, líder de una familia de la tribu de Simeón.
Y el nombre del varón muerto, que fué muerto con la Madianita, era Zimri hijo de Salu, jefe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón.
Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

Y la mujer madianita asesinada se llamaba Cozbi, hija de Zur. Su padre era jefe de una de las familias patriarcales de Madián.
Y el nombre de la mujer Madianita muerta, era Cozbi, hija de Zur, príncipe de pueblos, padre de familia en Madián.
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

Yahvé le habló a Moisés, diciendo:

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

“Ataquen a los madianitas y destrúyanlos,
Hostilizaréis á los Madianitas, y los heriréis:
Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
“Harass the Midianites, and strike them;
porque ellos los atacaron a ustedes con sus engaños. Los engañaron en el asunto de Peor y en el caso de Cozbi, la hija del líder madianita, que fue asesinada el día de la plaga causada por lo de Peor”.
Por cuanto ellos os afligieron á vosotros con sus ardides, con que os han engañado en el negocio de Peor, y en el negocio de Cozbi, hija del príncipe de Madián, su hermana, la cual fué muerta el día de la mortandad por causa de Peor.
For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
