Donne des coups au persifleur, le sot en deviendra sage; fais de la morale à l'homme intelligent, il n'en appréciera que mieux le savoir.

Hiere al escarnecedor, y el simple se hará avisado; y corrigiendo al entendido, entenderá ciencia.

Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

Flog a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke one who has understanding, and he will gain knowledge.
