1Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d’Israël,
2Pour connaître la sagesse et l’instruction, Pour comprendre les paroles de l’intelligence;
3Pour recevoir des leçons de bon sens, De justice, d’équité et de droiture;
4Pour donner aux simples du discernement, Au jeune homme de la connaissance et de la réflexion.
5Que le sage écoute, et il augmentera son savoir, Et celui qui est intelligent acquerra de l’habileté,
6Pour saisir le sens d’un proverbe ou d’une énigme, Des paroles des sages et de leurs sentences.
7La crainte de l’Éternel est le commencement de la science; Les insensés méprisent la sagesse et l’instruction.
8Écoute, mon fils, l’instruction de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l’enseignement de ta mère;
9Car c’est une couronne de grâce pour ta tête, Et une parure pour ton cou.
10Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, Ne te laisse pas gagner.
11S’ils disent: Viens avec nous! Dressons des embûches, versons du sang, Tendons des pièges à celui qui se repose en vain sur son innocence,
12Engloutissons-les tout vifs, comme le séjour des morts, Et tout entiers, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse;
13Nous trouverons toute sorte de biens précieux, Nous remplirons de butin nos maisons;
14Tu auras ta part avec nous, Il n’y aura qu’une bourse pour nous tous!
15Mon fils, ne te mets pas en chemin avec eux, Détourne ton pied de leur sentier;
16Car leurs pieds courent au mal, Et ils ont hâte de répandre le sang.
17Mais en vain jette-t-on le filet Devant les yeux de tout ce qui a des ailes;
18Et eux, c’est contre leur propre sang qu’ils dressent des embûches, C’est à leur âme qu’ils tendent des pièges.
19Ainsi arrive-t-il à tout homme avide de gain; La cupidité cause la perte de ceux qui s’y livrent.
20La sagesse crie dans les rues, Elle élève sa voix dans les places:
21Elle crie à l’entrée des lieux bruyants; Aux portes, dans la ville, elle fait entendre ses paroles:
22Jusqu’à quand, stupides, aimerez-vous la stupidité? Jusqu’à quand les moqueurs se plairont-ils à la moquerie, Et les insensés haïront-ils la science?
23Tournez-vous pour écouter mes réprimandes! Voici, je répandrai sur vous mon esprit, Je vous ferai connaître mes paroles…
24Puisque j’appelle et que vous résistez, Puisque j’étends ma main et que personne n’y prend garde,
25Puisque vous rejetez tous mes conseils, Et que vous n’aimez pas mes réprimandes,
26Moi aussi, je rirai quand vous serez dans le malheur, Je me moquerai quand la terreur vous saisira,
27Quand la terreur vous saisira comme une tempête, Et que le malheur vous enveloppera comme un tourbillon, Quand la détresse et l’angoisse fondront sur vous.
28Alors ils m’appelleront, et je ne répondrai pas; Ils me chercheront, et ils ne me trouveront pas.
29Parce qu’ils ont haï la science, Et qu’ils n’ont pas choisi la crainte de l’Éternel,
30Parce qu’ils n’ont point aimé mes conseils, Et qu’ils ont dédaigné toutes mes réprimandes,
31Ils se nourriront du fruit de leur voie, Et ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils,
32Car la résistance des stupides les tue, Et la sécurité des insensés les perd;
33Mais celui qui m’écoute reposera avec assurance, Il vivra tranquille et sans craindre aucun mal.

1LOS proverbios de Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel:
2Para entender sabiduría y doctrina; para conocer las razones prudentes;
3Para recibir el consejo de prudencia, justicia, y juicio y equidad;
4Para dar sagacidad á los simples, y á los jóvenes inteligencia y cordura.
5Oirá el sabio, y aumentará el saber; y el entendido adquirirá consejo;
6Para entender parábola y declaración; palabras de sabios, y sus dichos oscuros.
7El principio de la sabiduría es el temor de Jehová: los insensatos desprecian la sabiduría y la enseñanza.
8Oye, hijo mío, la doctrina de tu padre, y no desprecies la dirección de tu madre:
9Porque adorno de gracia serán á tu cabeza, y collares á tu cuello.
10Hijo mío, si los pecadores te quisieren engañar, no consientas.
11Si dijeren: Ven con nosotros, pongamos asechanzas á la sangre, acechemos sin motivo al inocente;
12Los tragaremos vivos como el sepulcro, y enteros, como los que caen en sima;
13Hallaremos riquezas de todas suertes, henchiremos nuestras casas de despojos;
14Echa tu suerte entre nosotros; tengamos todos una bolsa:
15Hijo mío, no andes en camino con ellos; aparta tu pie de sus veredas:
16Porque sus pies correrán al mal, é irán presurosos á derramar sangre.
17Porque en vano se tenderá la red ante los ojos de toda ave;
18Mas ellos á su propia sangre ponen asechanzas, y á sus almas tienden lazo.
19Tales son las sendas de todo el que es dado á la codicia, la cual prenderá el alma de sus poseedores.
20La sabiduría clama de fuera, da su voz en las plazas:
21Clama en los principales lugares de concurso; en las entradas de las puertas de la ciudad dice sus razones:
22¿Hasta cuándo, oh simples, amaréis la simpleza, y los burladores desearán el burlar, y los insensatos aborrecerán la ciencia?
23Volveos á mi reprensión: he aquí yo os derramaré mi espíritu, y os haré saber mis palabras.
24Por cuanto llamé, y no quisisteis; extendí mi mano, y no hubo quien escuchase;
25Antes desechasteis todo consejo mío, y mi reprensión no quisisteis:
26También yo me reiré en vuestra calamidad, y me burlaré cuando os viniere lo que teméis;
27Cuando viniere como una destrucción lo que teméis, y vuestra calamidad llegare como un torbellino; cuando sobre vosotros viniere tribulación y angustia.
28Entonces me llamarán, y no responderé; buscarme han de mañana, y no me hallarán:
29Por cuanto aborrecieron la sabiduría, y no escogieron el temor de Jehová,
30Ni quisieron mi consejo, y menospreciaron toda reprensión mía:
31Comerán pues del fruto de su camino, y se hartarán de sus consejos.
32Porque el reposo de los ignorantes los matará, y la prosperidad de los necios los echará á perder.
33Mas el que me oyere, habitará confiadamente, y vivirá reposado, sin temor de mal.

1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
11If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
13We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
19So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
22How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

1The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:
2to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;
3to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;
4to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man—
5that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel;
6to understand a proverb and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.
7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
8My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching;
9for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.
10My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.
11If they say, “Come with us. Let’s lie in wait for blood. Let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause.
12Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.
13We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.
14You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse”—
15my son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,
16for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.
17For the net is spread in vain in the sight of any bird;
18but these lay in wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.
20Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.
21She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:
22“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?
23Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.
24Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;
25but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;
26I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you,
27when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you.
28Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me,
29because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of the LORD.
30They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.
31Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.
32For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.
33But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
