Palabras o sentencias de aquel que congrega, hijo del afluente en sabiduría. Revelación que expuso un varón con quien está Dios, y el cual habiendo sido confortado por Dios que mora en él, habló de esta manera:
PALABRAS de Agur, hijo de Jachê: La profecía que dijo el varón á Ithiel, á Ithiel y á Ucal.

Yo soy el más ignorante de los hombres, ni tengo sabiduría humana.
Ciertamente más rudo soy yo que ninguno, ni tengo entendimiento de hombre.
Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.
“Surely I am the most ignorant man, and don’t have a man’s understanding.
No he aprendido la sabiduría, ni he entendido por mí mismo la ciencia de los santos.
Yo ni aprendí sabiduría, ni conozco la ciencia del Santo.
I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.
I have not learned wisdom, neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.
¿Quién ha subido al cielo y ha bajado de allá, para poder hablar sabiamente? ¿Quién sujetó el viento con sus manos? ¿Quién envolvió en densas nubes las aguas como en un envoltorio? ¿Quién ha dado esta habilidad a todas las partes de la tierra? ¿Cuál es el nombre de quien lo hizo?, ¿y qué nombre tiene su hijo? Dilo tú, si es que lo sabes.
¿Quién subió al cielo, y descendió? ¿quién encerró los vientos en sus puños? ¿quién ató las aguas en un paño? ¿quién afirmó todos los términos de la tierra? ¿cuál es su nombre, y el nombre de su hijo, si sabes?
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

Toda palabra de Dios está como acrisolada al fuego; es un escudo para los que en él confían.
Toda palabra de Dios es limpia; es escudo á los que en él esperan.
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
“Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
No añadas una tilde a sus palabras; de lo contrario serás contradecido y convencido de falsario.
No añadas á sus palabras, porque no te reprenda, y seas hallado mentiroso.
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
Don’t you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.
Dos cosas te he pedido, ¡oh Señor!, no me las niegues en lo que me resta de vida:

Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:
“Two things I have asked of you. Don’t deny me before I die.
Aleja de mí la vanidad y las palabras mentirosas. No me des ni mendiguez ni riquezas; dame solamente lo necesario para vivir,
Vanidad y palabra mentirosa aparta de mí. No me des pobreza ni riquezas; manténme del pan que he menester;
Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me,
no sea que viéndome sobrado, me vea tentado a renegar de ti; y diga lleno de arrogancia: ¿Quién es el Señor? O bien que, acosado de la necesidad, me ponga a robar, y a perjurar el Nombre de mi Dios.
No sea que me harte, y te niegue, y diga, ¿Quién es Jehová? ó no sea que siendo pobre, hurte, y blasfeme el nombre de mi Dios.
Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

No acuses ligeramente al siervo ante su amo; no sea que se maldiga, y tú te pierdas.

“Don’t slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.
Hay una casta de gente que maldice a su padre, y también a su madre, en vez de bendecirla.
Hay generación que maldice á su padre, y á su madre no bendice.
There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

Otra casta de gente que se tiene por pura, y por lo mismo no se ha lavado de sus manchas.
Hay generación limpia en su opinión, si bien no se ha limpiado su inmundicia.
There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

Otra casta hay de gente que tiene siempre altivos sus ojos, y erguidos y levantados sus párpados.

Otra casta de hombres que tienen unos dientes como cuchillos, y despedazan con sus quijadas, y se tragan los desvalidos de la tierra, y los pobres de entre los hombres.
Hay generación cuyos dientes son espadas, y sus muelas cuchillos, para devorar á los pobres de la tierra, y de entre los hombres á los menesterosos.
There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

La sanguijuela de la concupiscencia tiene dos hijas, las cuales están diciendo siempre: Dame, dame. Tres cosas hay insaciables, o más bien cuatro, que jamás dicen ya basta:

El infierno, la matriz de la estéril, y la tierra que nunca se sacia de agua; además el fuego, el cual nunca dice: basta.
El sepulcro, y la matriz estéril, la tierra no harta de aguas, y el fuego que jamás dice, Basta.
The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
Sheol, the barren womb, the earth that is not satisfied with water, and the fire that doesn’t say, ‘Enough!’
A quien hace mofa de su propio padre, y desprecia los dolores que al tenerlo padeció su madre, que le saquen los ojos los cuervos que viven a lo largo de los torrentes, y que se los coman los aguiluchos.
El ojo que escarnece á su padre, y menosprecia la enseñanza de la madre, los cuervos lo saquen de la arroyada, y tráguenlo los hijos del águila.
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

Tres cosas son difíciles de entender, o más bien cuatro; las cuales ignoro totalmente:

El rastro del águila en la atmósfera, el rastro de la culebra sobre la peña, el rastro de la nave en alta mar, y el proceder del hombre en la mocedad.
El rastro del águila en el aire; el rastro de la culebra sobre la peña; el rastro de la nave en medio de la mar; y el rastro del hombre en la moza.
The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

Tal es también el camino de la mujer adúltera; la cual después de haber comido, limpiándose la boca, dice con descaro: Yo no he cometido mal ninguno.
Tal es el rastro de la mujer adúltera: come, y limpia su boca, y dice: No he hecho maldad.
Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.
“So is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
Por tres cosas se perturba la tierra, o más bien por cuatro; las cuales ella no puede sufrir:

For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
“For three things the earth trembles, and under four, it can’t bear up:
por un esclavo que llega a reinar; por un tonto harto de comida;
Por el siervo cuando reinare; y por el necio cuando se hartare de pan;
For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;
For a servant when he is king, a fool when he is filled with food,
por una mujer que se casa con el que la aborrece, y por la esclava que es heredera de su ama.
Por la aborrecida cuando se casare; y por la sierva cuando heredare á su señora.
For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
for an unloved woman when she is married, and a servant who is heir to her mistress.
Cuatro cosas hay de las más pequeñas o ruines sobre la tierra; las cuales superan en saber a los sabios:

There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

las hormigas, ese pueblo debilísimo, el cual al tiempo de las mieses se provee de víveres;
Las hormigas, pueblo no fuerte, y en el verano preparan su comida;
The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;
The ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.
los conejos, tímidos animales que colocan su madriguera entre las peñas;
Los conejos, pueblo nada esforzado, y ponen su casa en la piedra;
The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;
The hyraxes are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.
las langostas, que sin tener rey, se mueven todas ordenadas en escuadrones;
Las langostas, no tienen rey, y salen todas acuadrilladas;
The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;
The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks.
el estelión, que trepa con sus pies, y se aposenta en los mismos palacios de los reyes.
La araña, ase con las manos, y está en palacios de rey.
The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.
You can catch a lizard with your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces.
Tres cosas hay que andan con mucho garbo, o más bien cuatro; las cuales marchan con gran gallardía:
Tres cosas hay de hermoso andar, y la cuarta pasea muy bien:
There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:
“There are three things which are stately in their march, four which are stately in going:
El león, que como el más fuerte de todos los animales, no teme el encuentro de nadie;
El león, fuerte entre todos los animales, que no torna atrás por nadie;
A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;
The lion, which is mightiest among animals, and doesn’t turn away for any;
el gallo, que anda erguido; el carnero padre, que va al frente del rebaño; y el rey, con quien nadie puede medir sus fuerzas.
El lebrel ceñido de lomos; asimismo el macho cabrío; y un rey contra el cual ninguno se levanta.
A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.

Hay quien pasaba por sabio, que descubrió ser un insensato, luego de elevado a un alto puesto; si hubiese tenido entendimiento no hubiera desplegado sus labios para pedir tal destino.
Si caiste, fué porque te enalteciste; y si mal pensaste, pon el dedo sobre la boca.
If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.
“If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, put your hand over your mouth.
Quien exprime o bate fuertemente la ubre para sacar leche, hace salir de ella un jugo espeso; y quien se suena con vehemencia saca sangre; así aquel que provoca la cólera enciende discordias.
Ciertamente el que exprime la leche, sacará manteca; y el que recio se suena las narices, sacará sangre: y el que provoca la ira, causará contienda.
Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
For as the churning of milk produces butter, and the wringing of the nose produces blood, so the forcing of wrath produces strife.”
