My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger,
tú te has enlazado mediante las palabras de tu boca, y ellas han sido el lazo en que has quedado preso.
Enlazado eres con las palabras de tu boca, y preso con las razones de tu boca.
Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
you are trapped by the words of your mouth; you are ensnared with the words of your mouth.
Haz, pues, hijo mío, lo que te digo, y líbrate a ti mismo, ya que has caído en manos de tu prójimo: corre de una a otra parte, apresúrate, despierta a tu amigo,
Haz esto ahora, hijo mío, y líbrate, ya que has caído en la mano de tu prójimo: ve, humíllate, y asegúrate de tu amigo.
Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

no concedas sueño a tus ojos, ni dejes que se cierren tus párpados.
No des sueño á tus ojos, ni á tus párpados adormecimiento.
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

Sálvate como el gamo que escapa de la trampa, y como el pájaro de las manos del cazador.
Escápate como el corzo de la mano del cazador, y como el ave de la mano del parancero.
Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Anda, ¡oh perezoso!, mira la hormiga, y considera su obrar, y aprende a ser sabio.
Ve á la hormiga, oh perezoso, mira sus caminos, y sé sabio;
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

Ella, sin tener guía, ni maestro, ni caudillo,
La cual no teniendo capitán, ni gobernador, ni señor,

se provee de alimento durante el verano, y recoge su comida al tiempo de la siega.
Prepara en el verano su comida y allega en el tiempo de la siega su mantenimiento.

¿Hasta cuándo has de dormir tú, oh perezoso? ¿Cuándo despertarás de tu sueño?

How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?
Tú dormirás un poquito, otro poquito dormitarás, otro cruzarás tus manos para dormir,
Un poco de sueño, un poco de dormitar, y cruzar por un poco las manos para reposo:
Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep—
y he aquí que vendrá sobre ti la indigencia como un salteador de camino, y la pobreza como un hombre armado. Al contrario, si fueres diligente, tus cosechas serán como un manantial, perenne, y huirá lejos de ti la miseria.
Así vendrá tu necesidad como caminante, y tu pobreza como hombre de escudo.
So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.
El hombre apóstata es un hombre perniciosísimo; no habla más que iniquidades:
El hombre malo, el hombre depravado, anda en perversidad de boca;
A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth,
Guiña los ojos, hace señas con el pie, habla con los dedos,
Guiña de sus ojos, habla con sus pies, indica con sus dedos;
He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers,
maquina el mal en su depravado corazón, y en todo tiempo siembra discordias.
Perversidades hay en su corazón, anda pensando mal en todo tiempo; enciende rencillas.
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.
De repente le vendrá a éste su perdición, y súbitamente quedará hecho añicos, sin que tenga ya remedio.
Por tanto su calamidad vendrá de repente; súbitamente será quebrantado, y no habrá remedio.
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.
Seis son las cosas que abomina el Señor, y otra además le es destestable.
Seis cosas aborrece Jehová, y aun siete abomina su alma:

Los ojos altaneros, la lengua mentirosa, las manos que derraman la sangre inocente,

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
el corazón que maquina perversos designios, los pies ligeros para correr al mal,
El corazón que maquina pensamientos inicuos, los pies presurosos para correr al mal,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
el testigo falso que forja embustes, y el que siembra discordias entre hermanos.
El testigo falso que habla mentiras, y el que enciende rencillas entre los hermanos.
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
Observa, hijo mío, los preceptos de tu padre, y no abandones la ley o los documentos de tu madre.
Guarda, hijo mío, el mandamiento de tu padre, y no dejes la enseñanza de tu madre:
My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.
Tenlos siempre grabados en tu corazón, y te sirvan como collar precioso.
Atalos siempre en tu corazón, enlázalos á tu cuello.
Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.
Cuando caminares vayan contigo, te guarden cuando durmieres, y despertando conversa con ellos;
Te guiarán cuando anduvieres; cuando durmieres te guardarán; hablarán contigo cuando despertares.
When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.
pues el mandamiento de tu padre es a manera de antorcha, y la ley o instrucciones de tu madre como una luz, y la corrección que conserva a los jóvenes en la disciplina, es el camino de la vida,
Porque el mandamiento es antorcha, y la enseñanza luz; y camino de vida las reprensiones de la enseñanza:
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
para que te libren de la mala mujer, y del lenguaje zalamero de la extraña.
Para que te guarden de la mala mujer, de la blandura de la lengua de la extraña.
To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.
No codicie tu corazón la hermosura de éstas, ni te cautiven sus miradas;
No codicies su hermosura en tu corazón, ni ella te prenda con sus ojos:
Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.
porque el precio de la meretriz apenas es el precio de un pan; mas esa mujer adúltera cautiva la preciosa alma del hombre.
Porque á causa de la mujer ramera es reducido el hombre á un bocado de pan; y la mujer caza la preciosa alma del varón.
For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life.
¿Por ventura puede un hombre esconder el fuego en su seno, sin que ardan sus vestidos?
¿Tomará el hombre fuego en su seno, sin que sus vestidos se quemen?
Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned?
¿O andar sobre las ascuas, sin quemarse las plantas de los pies?
¿Andará el hombre sobre las brasas, sin que sus pies se abrasen?
Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
Así el que se llega a la mujer ajena, tocándola quedará manchado.
Así el que entrare á la mujer de su prójimo; no será sin culpa cualquiera que la tocare.
So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.
No es tan gran culpa el que uno hurte, pues que hurta para saciar su hambre.
No tienen en poco al ladrón, cuando hurtare para saciar su alma teniendo hambre:
Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
Men don’t despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry,
Con todo eso, si lo cogen, lo pagará con las setenas, y tendrá que dar todos los haberes de su casa.
Empero tomado, paga las setenas, da toda la sustancia de su casa.
But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house.
Pero el adúltero acarrea con su insensatez la perdición a su alma:
Mas el que comete adulterio con la mujer, es falto de entendimiento: corrompe su alma el que tal hace.
But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.
Va acumulando para sí oprobios e ignominias, y jamás se borrará su infamia;
Plaga y vergüenza hallará; y su afrenta nunca será raída.
A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away.
porque los celos y furor del marido no le perdonarán hallando coyuntura de venganza;
Porque los celos son el furor del hombre, y no perdonará en el día de la venganza.
For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance.
ni se aplacará por súplicas de nadie, ni aceptará en insatisfacción dones, por muchos que sean.
No tendrá respeto á ninguna redención; ni querrá perdonar, aunque multipliques los dones.
He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
