1Que dirons-nous donc qu’Abraham, notre père, a obtenu selon la chair?
2Si Abraham a été justifié par les œuvres, il a sujet de se glorifier, mais non devant Dieu.
3Car que dit l’Écriture? Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice.
4Or, à celui qui fait une œuvre, le salaire est imputé, non comme une grâce, mais comme une chose due;
5et à celui qui ne fait point d’œuvre, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie l’impie, sa foi lui est imputée à justice.
6De même David exprime le bonheur de l’homme à qui Dieu impute la justice sans les œuvres:
7Heureux ceux dont les iniquités sont pardonnées, Et dont les péchés sont couverts!
8Heureux l’homme à qui le Seigneur n’impute pas son péché!
9Ce bonheur n’est-il que pour les circoncis, ou est-il également pour les incirconcis? Car nous disons que la foi fut imputée à justice à Abraham.
10Comment donc lui fut-elle imputée? Était-ce après, ou avant sa circoncision? Il n’était pas encore circoncis, il était incirconcis.
11Et il reçut le signe de la circoncision, comme sceau de la justice qu’il avait obtenue par la foi quand il était incirconcis, afin d’être le père de tous les incirconcis qui croient, pour que la justice leur fût aussi imputée,
12et le père des circoncis, qui ne sont pas seulement circoncis, mais encore qui marchent sur les traces de la foi de notre père Abraham quand il était incirconcis.
13En effet, ce n’est pas par la loi que l’héritage du monde a été promis à Abraham ou à sa postérité, c’est par la justice de la foi.
14Car, si les héritiers le sont par la loi, la foi est vaine, et la promesse est anéantie,
15parce que la loi produit la colère, et que là où il n’y a point de loi il n’y a point non plus de transgression.
16C’est pourquoi les héritiers le sont par la foi, pour que ce soit par grâce, afin que la promesse soit assurée à toute la postérité, non seulement à celle qui est sous la loi, mais aussi à celle qui a la foi d’Abraham, notre père à tous, selon qu’il est écrit:
17Je t’ai établi père d’un grand nombre de nations. Il est notre père devant celui auquel il a cru, Dieu, qui donne la vie aux morts, et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont point comme si elles étaient.
18Espérant contre toute espérance, il crut, en sorte qu’il devint père d’un grand nombre de nations, selon ce qui lui avait été dit: Telle sera ta postérité.
19Et, sans faiblir dans la foi, il ne considéra point que son corps était déjà usé, puisqu’il avait près de cent ans, et que Sara n’était plus en état d’avoir des enfants.
20Il ne douta point, par incrédulité, au sujet de la promesse de Dieu; mais il fut fortifié par la foi, donnant gloire à Dieu,
21et ayant la pleine conviction que ce qu’il promet il peut aussi l’accomplir.
22C’est pourquoi cela lui fut imputé à justice.
23Mais ce n’est pas à cause de lui seul qu’il est écrit que cela lui fut imputé;
24c’est encore à cause de nous, à qui cela sera imputé, à nous qui croyons en celui qui a ressuscité des morts Jésus notre Seigneur,
25lequel a été livré pour nos offenses, et est ressuscité pour notre justification.

1¿QUÉ, pues, diremos que halló Abraham nuestro padre según la carne?
2Que si Abraham fué justificado por la obras, tiene de qué gloriarse; mas no para con Dios.
3Porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? Y creyó Abraham á Dios, y le fué atribuído á justicia.
4Empero al que obra, no se le cuenta el salario por merced, sino por deuda.
5Mas al que no obra, pero cree en aquél que justifica al impío, la fe le es contada por justicia.
6Como también David dice ser bienaventurado el hombre al cual Dios atribuye justicia sin obras,
7Diciendo: Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas, y cuyos pecados son cubiertos.
8Bienaventurado el varón al cual el Señor no imputó pecado.
9¿Es pues esta bienaventuranza solamente en la circuncisión, ó también en la incircuncisión? porque decimos que á Abraham fué contada la fe por justicia.
10¿Cómo pues le fué contada? ¿en la circuncisión, ó en la incircuncisión? No en la circuncisión, sino en la incircuncisión.
11Y recibió la circuncisión por señal, por sello de la justicia de la fe que tuvo en la incircuncisión: para que fuese padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados, para que también á ellos les sea contado por justicia;
12Y padre de la circuncisión, no solamente á los que son de la circuncisión, mas también á los que siguen las pisadas de la fe que fué en nuestro padre Abraham antes de ser circuncidado.
13Porque no por la ley fué dada la promesa á Abraham ó á su simiente, que sería heredero del mundo, sino por la justicia de la fe.
14Porque si los que son de la ley son los herederos, vana es la fe, y anulada es la promesa.
15Porque la ley obra ira; porque donde no hay ley, tampoco hay transgresión.
16Por tanto es por la fe, para que sea por gracia; para que la promesa sea firme á toda simiente, no solamente al que es de la ley, mas también al que es de la fe de Abraham, el cual es padre de todos nosotros,
17(Como está escrito: Que por padre de muchas gentes te he puesto) delante de Dios, al cual creyó; el cual da vida á los muertos, y llama las cosas que no son, como las que son.
18El creyó en esperanza contra esperanza, para venir á ser padre de muchas gentes, conforme á lo que le había sido dicho: Así será tu simiente.
19Y no se enflaqueció en la fe, ni consideró su cuerpo ya muerto (siendo ya de casi cien años), ni la matriz muerta de Sara;
20Tampoco en la promesa de Dios dudó con desconfianza: antes fué esforzado en fe, dando gloria á Dios,
21Plenamente convencido de que todo lo que había prometido, era también poderoso para hacerlo.
22Por lo cual también le fué atribuído á justicia.
23Y no solamente por él fué escrito que le haya sido imputado;
24Sino también por nosotros, á quienes será imputado, esto es, á los que creemos en el que levantó de los muertos á Jesús Señor nuestro,
25El cual fué entregado por nuestros delitos, y resucitado para nuestra justificación.

1What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
2For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:
20He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

1What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
3For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
4Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
5But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
6Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
7“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
8Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
9Is this blessing then pronounced only on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.
10How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.
12He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
13For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.
15For the law produces wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
16For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
17As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.
18Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”
19Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
20Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,
21and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
22Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”
23Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
24but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
