1¿No está claro, mis hermanos (estoy usando un argumento para aquellos que tienen conocimiento de la ley), que la ley tiene poder sobre un hombre mientras viva?
2Porque la mujer que tiene marido es puesta por la ley bajo el poder de su esposo mientras viva; pero si su esposo está muerto, ella está libre de la ley del marido.
3Por tanto, si mientras el esposo vive, se une a otro hombre, se le adjudicará el nombre de adúltera; pero si el marido está muerto, ella está libre de la ley, y no es adúltera, incluso si ella toma a otro hombre.
4De la misma manera, hermanos míos, por el cuerpo de Cristo han muerto a la ley, para pertenecer a otro esposo, ahora son de Cristo, de aquel que resucitó, para que demos fruto a Dios.
5Porque cuando estábamos en la carne, las malas pasiones que se formaban por medio de la ley, obran en nuestros cuerpos para dar el fruto de la muerte.
6Pero ahora estamos libres de la ley, habiendo sido hechos muertos a lo que tenía poder sobre nosotros; para que seamos siervos en el nuevo camino del espíritu, no en el viejo camino de la letra.
7¿Qué hay que decir? es la ley pecado? de ninguna manera. Pero no habría tenido conocimiento del pecado sino hubiera sido por la ley lo que es pecado: nunca hubiera sabido lo que es codiciar, si la ley no hubiera dicho “No codicies”.
8Pero el pecado, tomando su oportunidad a través de lo que estaba ordenado por la ley, estaba obrando en mí toda forma de Codicia: porque sin la ley el pecado está muerto.
9Y hubo un tiempo en que viví sin la ley; pero cuando la ley dio su orden, el pecado vino a la vida,
10Y yo morí, descubrí que la ley cuyo propósito era dar vida se había convertido en causa de muerte:
11Porque fui engañado y crucificado por el pecado, que se aprovechó de la ley.
12Pero la ley es santa, y sus órdenes son santas, rectas y buenas.
13En resumen ¿lo que es bueno, me lleva a la muerte? De ninguna manera. Pero el propósito era que se pudiera ver el pecado como pecado al obrar la muerte por medio de lo que es bueno; para que a través de las órdenes de la ley el pecado parezca mucho más malo.
14Porque somos conscientes de que la ley es del espíritu; pero yo soy de la carne, entregado al poder del pecado.
15No entiendo lo que me pasa, pues no hago lo que quiero, y en cambio aquello que odio es precisamente lo que hago.
16Pero si hago lo que no tengo intención de hacer, estoy de acuerdo con la ley en que la ley es buena.
17Así que ya no soy yo quien lo hace, sino el pecado que vive en mí.
18Porque soy consciente de que en mí, es decir, en mi carne, en mi naturaleza de hombre pecador, no hay nada bueno: tengo el deseo de hacer lo bueno, pero no el poder para hacer lo correcto.
19Pero el bien que tengo la intención de hacer, no lo hago, pero el mal que no tengo intención de hacer, eso hago.
20Pero si hago lo que no tengo intención de hacer, ya no soy yo quien lo hace, sino el pecado que vive en mí.
21Así que veo una ley que, aunque tengo la intención de hacer el bien, el mal está presente en mí.
22En mi corazón me complazco en la ley de Dios,
23Pero veo otra ley en mi cuerpo, obrando contra la ley de mi mente, y haciéndome el siervo de la ley del pecado que está en mi carne.
24¡Qué infeliz soy! ¿Quién me liberará del poder de la muerte que está en mi cuerpo?
25Solamente Dios, a quien doy gracias por medio de Jesucristo, nuestro Señor. Entonces, con mi mente, soy un siervo de la ley de Dios, pero con mi carne a la ley del pecado.

1¿IGNORÁIS, hermanos, (porque hablo con los que saben la ley) que la ley se enseñorea del hombre entre tanto que vive?
2Porque la mujer que está sujeta á marido, mientras el marido vive está obligada á la ley; mas muerto el marido, libre es de la ley del marido.
3Así que, viviendo el marido, se llamará adúltera si fuere de otro varón; mas si su marido muriere, es libre de la ley; de tal manera que no será adúltera si fuere de otro marido.
4Así también vosotros, hermanos míos, estáis muertos á la ley por el cuerpo de Cristo, para que seáis de otro, á saber, del que resucitó de los muertos, á fin de que fructifiquemos á Dios.
5Porque mientras estábamos en la carne, los afectos de los pecados que eran por la ley, obraban en nuestros miembros fructificando para muerte.
6Mas ahora estamos libres de la ley, habiendo muerto á aquella en la cual estábamos detenidos, para que sirvamos en novedad de espíritu, y no en vejez de letra.
7¿Qué pues diremos? ¿La ley es pecado? En ninguna manera. Empero yo no conocí el pecado sino por la ley: porque tampoco conociera la concupiscencia, si la ley no dijera: No codiciarás.
8Mas el pecado, tomando ocasión, obró en mí por el mandamiento toda concupiscencia: porque sin la ley el pecado está muerto.
9Así que, yo sin la ley vivía por algún tiempo: mas venido el mandamiento, el pecado revivió, y yo morí.
10Y hallé que el mandamiento, intimado para vida, para mí era mortal:
11Porque el pecado, tomando ocasión, me engañó por el mandamiento, y por él me mató.
12De manera que la ley á la verdad es santa, y el mandamiento santo, y justo, y bueno.
13¿Luego lo que es bueno, á mí me es hecho muerte? No; sino que el pecado, para mostrarse pecado, por lo bueno me obró la muerte, haciéndose pecado sobremanera pecante por el mandamiento.
14Porque sabemos que la ley es espiritual; mas yo soy carnal, vendido á sujeción del pecado.
15Porque lo que hago, no lo entiendo; ni lo que quiero, hago; antes lo que aborrezco, aquello hago.
16Y si lo que no quiero, esto hago, apruebo que la ley es buena.
17De manera que ya no obro aquello, sino el pecado que mora en mí.
18Y yo sé que en mí (es á saber, en mi carne) no mora el bien: porque tengo el querer, mas efectuar el bien no lo alcanzo.
19Porque no hago el bien que quiero; mas el mal que no quiero, éste hago.
20Y si hago lo que no quiero, ya no lo obro yo, sino el pecado que mora en mí.
21Así que, queriendo yo hacer el bien, hallo esta ley: Que el mal está en mí.
22Porque según el hombre interior, me deleito en la ley de Dios:
23Mas veo otra ley en mis miembros, que se rebela contra la ley de mi espíritu, y que me lleva cautivo á la ley del pecado que está en mis miembros.
24¡Miserable hombre de mí! ¿quién me librará del cuerpo de esta muerte?
25Gracias doy á Dios, por Jesucristo Señor nuestro. Así que, yo mismo con la mente sirvo á la ley de Dios, mas con la carne á la ley del pecado.

1Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

1Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?
2For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.
3So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.
4Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God.
5For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law worked in our members to bring out fruit to death.
6But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.
7What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
8But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
9I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.
10The commandment which was for life, this I found to be for death;
11for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.
12Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good.
13Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, was producing death in me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful.
14For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.
15For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.
16But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.
17So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.
18For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.
19For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

21I find then the law that, while I desire to do good, evil is present.
