1Wisset ihr nicht, liebe Brüder (denn ich rede mit solchen, die das Gesetz wissen), daß das Gesetz herrscht über den Menschen solange er lebt?
2Denn ein Weib, das unter dem Manne ist, ist an ihn gebunden durch das Gesetz, solange der Mann lebt; so aber der Mann stirbt, so ist sie los vom Gesetz, das den Mann betrifft.
3Wo sie nun eines andern Mannes wird, solange der Mann lebt, wird sie eine Ehebrecherin geheißen; so aber der Mann stirbt, ist sie frei vom Gesetz, daß sie nicht eine Ehebrecherin ist, wo sie eines andern Mannes wird.
4Also seid auch ihr, meine Brüder, getötet dem Gesetz durch den Leib Christi, daß ihr eines andern seid, nämlich des, der von den Toten auferweckt ist, auf daß wir Gott Frucht bringen.
5Denn da wir im Fleisch waren, da waren die sündigen Lüste, welche durchs Gesetz sich erregten, kräftig in unsern Gliedern, dem Tode Frucht zu bringen.
6Nun aber sind wir vom Gesetz los und ihm abgestorben, das uns gefangenhielt, also daß wir dienen sollen im neuen Wesen des Geistes und nicht im alten Wesen des Buchstabens.
7Was wollen wir denn nun sagen? Ist das Gesetz Sünde? Das sei ferne! Aber die Sünde erkannte ich nicht, außer durchs Gesetz. Denn ich wußte nichts von der Lust, wo das Gesetz nicht hätte gesagt: “Laß dich nicht gelüsten!”
8Da nahm aber die Sünde Ursache am Gebot und erregte in mir allerlei Lust; denn ohne das Gesetz war die Sünde tot.
9Ich aber lebte weiland ohne Gesetz; da aber das Gebot kam, ward die Sünde wieder lebendig,
10ich aber starb; und es fand sich, daß das Gebot mir zum Tode gereichte, das mir doch zum Leben gegeben war.
11Denn die Sünde nahm Ursache am Gebot und betrog mich und tötete mich durch dasselbe Gebot.
12Das Gesetz ist ja heilig, und das Gebot ist heilig, recht und gut.
13Ist denn, das da gut ist, mir zum Tod geworden? Das sei ferne! Aber die Sünde, auf daß sie erscheine, wie sie Sünde ist, hat sie mir durch das Gute den Tod gewirkt, auf daß die Sünde würde überaus sündig durchs Gebot.
14Denn wir wissen, daß das Gesetz geistlich ist; ich bin aber fleischlich, unter die Sünde verkauft.
15Denn ich weiß nicht, was ich tue. Denn ich tue nicht, was ich will; sondern, was ich hasse, das tue ich.
16So ich aber das tue, was ich nicht will, so gebe ich zu, daß das Gesetz gut sei.
17So tue ich nun dasselbe nicht, sondern die Sünde, die in mir wohnt.
18Denn ich weiß, daß in mir, das ist in meinem Fleische, wohnt nichts Gutes. Wollen habe ich wohl, aber vollbringen das Gute finde ich nicht.
19Denn das Gute, das ich will, das tue ich nicht; sondern das Böse, das ich nicht will, das tue ich.
20So ich aber tue, was ich nicht will, so tue ich dasselbe nicht; sondern die Sünde, die in mir wohnt.
21So finde ich mir nun ein Gesetz, der ich will das Gute tun, daß mir das Böse anhangt.
22Denn ich habe Lust an Gottes Gesetz nach dem inwendigen Menschen.
23Ich sehe aber ein ander Gesetz in meinen Gliedern, das da widerstreitet dem Gesetz in meinem Gemüte und nimmt mich gefangen in der Sünde Gesetz, welches ist in meinen Gliedern.
24Ich elender Mensch! wer wird mich erlösen von dem Leibe dieses Todes?
25Ich danke Gott durch Jesum Christum, unserm HERRN. So diene ich nun mit dem Gemüte dem Gesetz Gottes, aber mit dem Fleische dem Gesetz der Sünde.

1¿IGNORÁIS, hermanos, (porque hablo con los que saben la ley) que la ley se enseñorea del hombre entre tanto que vive?
2Porque la mujer que está sujeta á marido, mientras el marido vive está obligada á la ley; mas muerto el marido, libre es de la ley del marido.
3Así que, viviendo el marido, se llamará adúltera si fuere de otro varón; mas si su marido muriere, es libre de la ley; de tal manera que no será adúltera si fuere de otro marido.
4Así también vosotros, hermanos míos, estáis muertos á la ley por el cuerpo de Cristo, para que seáis de otro, á saber, del que resucitó de los muertos, á fin de que fructifiquemos á Dios.
5Porque mientras estábamos en la carne, los afectos de los pecados que eran por la ley, obraban en nuestros miembros fructificando para muerte.
6Mas ahora estamos libres de la ley, habiendo muerto á aquella en la cual estábamos detenidos, para que sirvamos en novedad de espíritu, y no en vejez de letra.
7¿Qué pues diremos? ¿La ley es pecado? En ninguna manera. Empero yo no conocí el pecado sino por la ley: porque tampoco conociera la concupiscencia, si la ley no dijera: No codiciarás.
8Mas el pecado, tomando ocasión, obró en mí por el mandamiento toda concupiscencia: porque sin la ley el pecado está muerto.
9Así que, yo sin la ley vivía por algún tiempo: mas venido el mandamiento, el pecado revivió, y yo morí.
10Y hallé que el mandamiento, intimado para vida, para mí era mortal:
11Porque el pecado, tomando ocasión, me engañó por el mandamiento, y por él me mató.
12De manera que la ley á la verdad es santa, y el mandamiento santo, y justo, y bueno.
13¿Luego lo que es bueno, á mí me es hecho muerte? No; sino que el pecado, para mostrarse pecado, por lo bueno me obró la muerte, haciéndose pecado sobremanera pecante por el mandamiento.
14Porque sabemos que la ley es espiritual; mas yo soy carnal, vendido á sujeción del pecado.
15Porque lo que hago, no lo entiendo; ni lo que quiero, hago; antes lo que aborrezco, aquello hago.
16Y si lo que no quiero, esto hago, apruebo que la ley es buena.
17De manera que ya no obro aquello, sino el pecado que mora en mí.
18Y yo sé que en mí (es á saber, en mi carne) no mora el bien: porque tengo el querer, mas efectuar el bien no lo alcanzo.
19Porque no hago el bien que quiero; mas el mal que no quiero, éste hago.
20Y si hago lo que no quiero, ya no lo obro yo, sino el pecado que mora en mí.
21Así que, queriendo yo hacer el bien, hallo esta ley: Que el mal está en mí.
22Porque según el hombre interior, me deleito en la ley de Dios:
23Mas veo otra ley en mis miembros, que se rebela contra la ley de mi espíritu, y que me lleva cautivo á la ley del pecado que está en mis miembros.
24¡Miserable hombre de mí! ¿quién me librará del cuerpo de esta muerte?
25Gracias doy á Dios, por Jesucristo Señor nuestro. Así que, yo mismo con la mente sirvo á la ley de Dios, mas con la carne á la ley del pecado.

1Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

1Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?
2For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.
3So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.
4Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God.
5For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law worked in our members to bring out fruit to death.
6But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.
7What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
8But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
9I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.
10The commandment which was for life, this I found to be for death;
11for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.
12Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good.
13Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, was producing death in me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful.
14For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.
15For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.
16But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.
17So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.
18For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.
19For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.
20But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.
21I find then the law that, while I desire to do good, evil is present.
22For I delight in God’s law after the inward person,
23but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.
24What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?
25I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law.
