¿Es que no comprenden todavía, mis hermanos conocedores de la ley, que cuando una persona muere, la ley pierde todo su poder sobre ella?

¿IGNORÁIS, hermanos, (porque hablo con los que saben la ley) que la ley se enseñorea del hombre entre tanto que vive?

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?

Por ejemplo, cuando una mujer se casa, la ley la ata al esposo mientras este viva. Pero si el esposo muere, ella deja de estar atada a la ley que la unía a su esposo.

Porque la mujer que está sujeta á marido, mientras el marido vive está obligada á la ley; mas muerto el marido, libre es de la ley del marido.

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

Si desea casarse de nuevo, puede hacerlo, pues está libre de la ley y no es adúltera. Esto sería incorrecto si el esposo viviera; entonces sí sería una adúltera.

Así que, viviendo el marido, se llamará adúltera si fuere de otro varón; mas si su marido muriere, es libre de la ley; de tal manera que no será adúltera si fuere de otro marido.

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.

Así sucede también con ustedes, hermanos míos: por estar unidos a Cristo, están muertos para la ley. Y esto, a fin de que ahora estén unidos a aquel que resucitó de entre los muertos, para producir buenos frutos para Dios.

Así también vosotros, hermanos míos, estáis muertos á la ley por el cuerpo de Cristo, para que seáis de otro, á saber, del que resucitó de los muertos, á fin de que fructifiquemos á Dios.

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God.

Cuando vivíamos de acuerdo con nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa, los deseos pecaminosos actuaban en nosotros, estimulados por la ley. Lo que producían en nosotros era muerte.

Porque mientras estábamos en la carne, los afectos de los pecados que eran por la ley, obraban en nuestros miembros fructificando para muerte.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law worked in our members to bring out fruit to death.

Pero ahora estamos muertos con respecto a la ley que nos dominaba y podemos servir a Dios. Y esto no como antes, que lo hacíamos bajo el antiguo mandamiento, sino que ahora lo hacemos bajo el poder del Espíritu.

Mas ahora estamos libres de la ley, habiendo muerto á aquella en la cual estábamos detenidos, para que sirvamos en novedad de espíritu, y no en vejez de letra.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

¿Es que acaso estoy dando a entender que la ley de Dios es pecado? ¡Claro que no! La ley no es pecado, pero fue la ley la que me enseñó que en mí había pecado. Jamás me habría dado cuenta de lo que es codiciar si la ley no me hubiera dicho: «No codiciarás».

¿Qué pues diremos? ¿La ley es pecado? En ninguna manera. Empero yo no conocí el pecado sino por la ley: porque tampoco conociera la concupiscencia, si la ley no dijera: No codiciarás.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”

Pero el pecado usó aquella ley que condena la codicia para despertar en mí toda clase de malos deseos. Si no hubiera ninguna ley que transgredir, nadie pecaría.

Mas el pecado, tomando ocasión, obró en mí por el mandamiento toda concupiscencia: porque sin la ley el pecado está muerto.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

Por eso, antes de entender lo que la ley demanda, me sentía bien. Pero cuando llegó el mandamiento, cobró vida el pecado y morí.

Así que, yo sin la ley vivía por algún tiempo: mas venido el mandamiento, el pecado revivió, y yo morí.

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.

Es decir, el mandamiento que debía haberme dado vida, me condenó a muerte.

Y hallé que el mandamiento, intimado para vida, para mí era mortal:

And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

The commandment which was for life, this I found to be for death;

Porque el pecado me engañó, pues tomó el mandamiento de Dios y lo usó para matarme.

Porque el pecado, tomando ocasión, me engañó por el mandamiento, y por él me mató.

For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

Así que, como ven, la ley en sí es santa, justa y buena.

De manera que la ley á la verdad es santa, y el mandamiento santo, y justo, y bueno.

Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good.

¿Y acaso lo que era bueno causó mi muerte? ¡De ninguna manera! No; el pecado usó lo que era bueno para causarme la muerte. Así que, utilizando el mandamiento bueno, el pecado se mostró con toda su maldad.

¿Luego lo que es bueno, á mí me es hecho muerte? No; sino que el pecado, para mostrarse pecado, por lo bueno me obró la muerte, haciéndose pecado sobremanera pecante por el mandamiento.

Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, was producing death in me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful.

Sabemos que la ley es espiritual. El problema es que yo estoy vendido en esclavitud al pecado, a causa de mi naturaleza pecadora.

Porque sabemos que la ley es espiritual; mas yo soy carnal, vendido á sujeción del pecado.

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

Yo no me entiendo a mí mismo, porque no hago lo que quiero, sino lo que aborrezco.

Porque lo que hago, no lo entiendo; ni lo que quiero, hago; antes lo que aborrezco, aquello hago.

For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.

For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.

Sé bien que si hago lo que no quiero hacer, entonces la ley es buena.

Y si lo que no quiero, esto hago, apruebo que la ley es buena.

If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.

De manera que no soy yo el que lo hace. Es el pecado que está dentro de mí.

De manera que ya no obro aquello, sino el pecado que mora en mí.

Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

Yo sé que en mi vieja naturaleza no hay nada bueno. Pues aunque quiero hacer lo bueno, no puedo.

Y yo sé que en mí (es á saber, en mi carne) no mora el bien: porque tengo el querer, mas efectuar el bien no lo alcanzo.

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.

Cuando quiero hacer el bien, no lo hago; y cuando trato de no hacer lo malo, lo hago de todos modos.

Porque no hago el bien que quiero; mas el mal que no quiero, éste hago.

For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

Entonces, si hago lo que no quiero hacer, está claro cuál es el problema: es el pecado que vive en mí.

Y si hago lo que no quiero, ya no lo obro yo, sino el pecado que mora en mí.

Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

Así que, queriendo hacer el bien, me enfrento a esta ley: el mal vive en mí.

Así que, queriendo yo hacer el bien, hallo esta ley: Que el mal está en mí.

I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

I find then the law that, while I desire to do good, evil is present.

En mi interior, quisiera obedecer la voluntad de Dios,

Porque según el hombre interior, me deleito en la ley de Dios:

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

For I delight in God’s law after the inward person,

pero me doy cuenta de que en los miembros de mi cuerpo hay otra ley, que es la ley del pecado. Esta ley está en guerra contra mi mente, y me tiene cautivo. ¡Qué triste es el estado en que me encuentro!

Mas veo otra ley en mis miembros, que se rebela contra la ley de mi espíritu, y que me lleva cautivo á la ley del pecado que está en mis miembros.

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

¿Quién me libertará de la esclavitud de esta mortal naturaleza pecadora?

¡Miserable hombre de mí! ¿quién me librará del cuerpo de esta muerte?

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?

¡Gracias a Dios que Cristo lo ha logrado! En conclusión: con mi mente sirvo a la ley de Dios pero con mi naturaleza pecaminosa a la ley del pecado.

Gracias doy á Dios, por Jesucristo Señor nuestro. Así que, yo mismo con la mente sirvo á la ley de Dios, mas con la carne á la ley del pecado.

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law.
