y que da la esperanza de la vida eterna, la cual Dios, que no puede mentir, ha prometido y destinado antes de todos los siglos,

PABLO, siervo de Dios, y apóstol de Jesucristo, según la fe de los escogidos de Dios, y el conocimiento de la verdad que es según la piedad,

habiendo hecho ver en su tiempo el cumplimiento de su palabra en la predicación de la buena nueva que se me ha confiado a mí por mandato de Dios, salvador nuestro,

Para la esperanza de la vida eterna, la cual Dios, que no puede mentir, prometió antes de los tiempos de los siglos,

a Tito, hijo querido, según la fe que nos es común, gracia y paz de Dios Padre, y de Jesucristo Salvador nuestro.

Y manifestó á sus tiempos su palabra por la predicación, que me es á mí encomendada por mandamiento de nuestro Salvador Dios;

But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

La causa porque te dejé en Creta, es para que arregles y corrijas las cosas que falten, y establezcas en cada ciudad presbíteros, conforme yo te prescribí,

A Tito, verdadero hijo en la común fe: Gracia, misericordia, y paz de Dios Padre, y del Señor Jesucristo Salvador nuestro.

To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

escogiendo para tan sagrado ministerio a quien sea sin tacha, casado una sola vez, que tenga hijos fieles, no infamados de lujuria, ni desobedientes.

Por esta causa te dejé en Creta, para que corrigieses lo que falta, y pusieses ancianos por las villas, así como yo te mandé:

For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you—

Porque es necesario que un obispo sea irreprensible, o sin crimen, como que es el ecónomo de Dios o el dispensador de sus riquezas, no soberbio, no colérico, no dado al vino, no percusor, o violento, no codicioso de sórdida ganancia;

El que fuere sin crimen, marido de una mujer, que tenga hijos fieles que no estén acusados de disolución, ó contumaces.

If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior.

sino amante de la hospitalidad, dulce y afable, sobrio, justo, religioso, continente,

Porque es menester que el obispo sea sin crimen, como dispensador de Dios; no soberbio, no iracundo, no amador del vino, no heridor, no codicioso de torpes ganancias;

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

For the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward, not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain;

adicto a las verdades de la fe, según se le han enseñado a él, a fin de que sea capaz de instruir en la sana doctrina, y argüir a los que contradijeren.

Sino hospedador, amador de lo bueno, templado, justo, santo, continente;

But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled,

Porque aun hay muchos desobedientes, charlatanes y embaucadores, sobre todo de los circuncisos, o judíos convertidos,

Retenedor de la fiel palabra que es conforme á la doctrina: para que también pueda exhortar con sana doctrina, y convencer á los que contradijeren.

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.

a quienes es necesario tapar la boca; que trastornan familias enteras, enseñando cosas que no convienen con la buena nueva por amor de una torpe ganancia, o vil interés.

Porque hay aún muchos contumaces, habladores de vanidades, y engañadores de las almas, mayormente los que son de la circuncisión,

For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

Dijo uno de ellos, propio profeta, de esos mismos isleños: Son los cretenses siempre mentirosos, malignas bestias, vientres perezosos.

A los cuales es preciso tapar la boca; que trastornan casas enteras; enseñando lo que no conviene, por torpe ganancia.

Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

Este testimonio es verdadero. Por tanto, repréndelos fuertemente, para que conserven sana la fe,

Dijo uno de ellos, propio profeta de ellos: Los Cretenses, siempre mentirosos, malas bestias, vientres perezosos.

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

y no den oídos a las fábulas judaicas, ni a mandamientos de hombres que se apartan de la verdad.

Este testimonio es verdadero: por tanto, repréndelos duramente, para que sean sanos en la fe,

Para los limpios todas las cosas son limpias; mas para los contaminados, y que no tienen fe no hay nada limpio, sino que tienen contaminadas su alma y su conciencia con los pecados.

No atendiendo á fábulas judaicas, y á mandamientos de hombres que se apartan de la verdad.

Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

Profesan conocer a Dios, mas lo niegan con las obras, siendo como son abominables y rebeldes, y negados para toda obra buena.

Todas las cosas son limpias á los limpios; mas á los contaminados é infieles nada es limpio: antes su alma y conciencia están contaminadas.

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Mas tú has de enseñar solamente cosas conforme a la sana doctrina,

Profésanse conocer á Dios; mas con los hechos lo niegan, siendo abominables y rebeldes, reprobados para toda buena obra.

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
