Cuando Josías, hijo de Amón, reinaba en Judá, el Señor le dio un mensaje al profeta Sofonías. Este era hijo de Cusí, quien, a su vez, era hijo de Guedalías, nieto de Amarías y bisnieto de Ezequías.
PALABRA de Jehová que fué á Sofonías hijo de Cushi, hijo de Gedalías, hijo de Amarías, hijo de Ezechîas, en días de Josías hijo de Amón, rey de Judá.
The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

«Arrasaré por completo con todo lo que hay sobre la tierra, dice el Señor.
Destruiré del todo todas las cosas de sobre la haz de la tierra, dice Jehová.
I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
I will utterly sweep away everything from the surface of the earth, says the LORD.
»Arrasaré con hombres y animales por igual. Los ídolos y quienes los adoran desaparecerán de la tierra. Aun las aves del cielo y los peces del mar perecerán. Acabaré con los habitantes de toda la tierra, dice el Señor.
Destruiré los hombres y las bestias; destruiré las aves del cielo, y los peces de la mar, y las piedras de tropiezo con los impíos; y talaré los hombres de sobre la haz de la tierra, dice Jehová.
I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.
I will sweep away man and animal. I will sweep away the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and the heaps of rubble with the wicked. I will cut off man from the surface of the earth, says the LORD.
»Aplastaré a Judá, junto con Jerusalén, con mi puño, y destruiré a todos los que rinden homenaje a Baal. Acabaré con los sacerdotes idólatras, de manera que hasta el recuerdo de ellos desaparecerá.
Y extenderé mi mano sobre Judá, y sobre todos los moradores de Jerusalem, y exterminaré de este lugar el remanente de Baal, y el nombre de los Chemarim con los sacerdotes;
I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;

Acabaré con todos los que se suben a los terrados para rendir homenaje al sol, la luna y las estrellas. Destruiré a todos los que me rinden homenaje a mí, pero al mismo tiempo rinden homenaje al dios Moloc.
Y á los que se inclinan sobre los terrados al ejército del cielo; y á los que se inclinan jurando por Jehová y jurando por su rey;
And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;
those who worship the army of the sky on the housetops, those who worship and swear by the LORD and also swear by Malcam,
Destruiré también a los que antes rendían homenaje al Señor, pero ya no lo hacen, y a los que nunca lo han amado ni han querido saber de él.
Y á los que tornan atrás de en pos de Jehová; y á los que no buscaron á Jehová, ni preguntaron por él.
And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.

»¡Debe guardarse un silencio respetuoso en la presencia de Dios el Señor! Ha llegado el día terrible de su juicio. Ha preparado una gran matanza contra su pueblo, y ha escogido a sus convidados.
Calla en la presencia del Señor Jehová, porque el día de Jehová está cercano; porque Jehová ha aparejado sacrificio, prevenido ha sus convidados.
Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.
Be silent at the presence of the Lord GOD, for the day of the LORD is at hand. For the LORD has prepared a sacrifice. He has consecrated his guests.
El día del juicio castigaré a los jefes y príncipes de Judá, y a todos los que llevan vestiduras extranjeras.
Y será que en el día del sacrificio de Jehová, haré visitación sobre los príncipes, y sobre los hijos del rey, y sobre todos los que visten vestido extranjero.
And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.

Sí, yo castigaré a los que siguen las costumbres paganas, a los que roban y llenan las casas de sus amos con ganancias obtenidas por la violencia y el fraude, y a los que presentan cosas robadas como ofrenda en el templo del Señor.
Asimismo haré visitación en aquel día sobre todos los que saltan la puerta, los que hinchen de robo y de engaño las casas de sus señores.
In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

»Gritos pidiendo auxilio se oirán en aquel día desde la puerta del barrio llamado Los Pescados, aullidos desde el Barrio Nuevo, y un bullicio espantoso desde las colinas, dice el Señor.
Y habrá en aquel día, dice Jehová, voz de clamor desde la puerta del pescado, y aullido desde la segunda, y grande quebrantamiento desde los collados.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and an howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills.

»¡Aúllen de pesar, ustedes que viven en el barrio del Mercado, pues todos tus comerciantes que allí habitan morirán! ¡Serán eliminados todos los que trafican con el dinero!

Howl, ye inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that bear silver are cut off.

En aquel día buscaré cuidadosamente por toda Jerusalén a todos los tramposos, castigaré a los que reposan tranquilos después del robo; también a los que se atreven a pensar que el Señor no interviene ni para bien ni para mal.
Y será en aquel tiempo, que yo escudriñaré á Jerusalem con candiles, y haré visitación sobre los hombres que están sentados sobre sus heces, los cuales dicen en su corazón: Jehová ni hará bien ni mal.
And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.

Estos mismos verán cómo sus riquezas cambian de dueño, verán cómo sus casas son destruidas. No tendrán jamás la oportunidad de vivir en las casas nuevas que edificaron. No podrán beber el fruto de los viñedos que plantaron.
Será por tanto saqueada su hacienda, y sus casas asoladas: y edificarán casas, mas no las habitarán; y plantarán viñas, mas no beberán el vino de ellas.
Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.

»Ese día terrible del Señor está cerca. ¡Se acerca rápidamente! Ese día será tan horrible que hasta los más valientes llorarán amargamente y habrá alboroto por todos lados.
Cercano está el día grande de Jehová, cercano y muy presuroso; voz amarga del día de Jehová; gritará allí el valiente.
The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.

En ese día se descargará toda la cólera de Dios; será un día de angustia y dolor, día marcado por la ruina y la desolación, de terrible oscuridad, de nubarrones y neblina de pesar.
Día de ira aquel día, día de angustia y de aprieto, día de alboroto y de asolamiento, día de tiniebla y de oscuridad, día de nublado y de entenebrecimiento,

»La trompeta sonará ordenando el ataque, se oirá el griterío de la guerra; caerán hasta las ciudades mejor fortificadas y las torres fuertes de la defensa.

Por haber obrado tan mal contra el Señor, él hará que ese día todos sean angustiados y anden como ciegos sin darse cuenta ni por donde caminan. Su sangre correrá por las calles, y sus cuerpos se pudrirán sobre la tierra.
Y atribularé los hombres, y andarán como ciegos, porque pecaron contra Jehová: y la sangre de ellos será derramada como polvo, y su carne como estiércol.
And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.

Ese día en que el Señor desate su castigo, de nada les servirá la plata y el oro que tienen. Toda la tierra será devorada por el fuego de su ira. ¡En poco tiempo morirán todos los habitantes de la tierra!».
Ni su plata ni su oro podrá librarlos en el día de la ira de Jehová; pues toda la tierra será consumida con el fuego de su celo: porque ciertamente consumación apresurada hará con todos los moradores de la tierra.
Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.
